Despite an underperforming run at the box office, The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo will officially be part of a trilogy. It was unclear whether Sony Pictures would greenlight the next two adaptations in the Millennium trilogy, but executives from Sony told Deadline The Girl Who Played With Fire and The Girl Who Kicked The Hornets’ Nest will go into production.
Dragon Tattoo is expected to accumulate $200 million worldwide by the end of its theatrical run, well over its $90 million budget. While that seems like an awful lot of money, Sony expected the worldwide phenomenon to pull in a considerable amount more. Sony believes that the Christmas release was inappropriate for such a dark film and a summer blockbuster release seems more fitting for the follow-up films.
