Fiona Apple has only released three albums in the nearly 16 years since Tidal and the “Criminal” video were simultaneously astounding and creeping out MTV-addicted post-Tori Amos enthusiasts… so any news regarding her long-rumored fourth album is kind of a big deal. This weekend, Epic Records CEO L.A. Reid dropped a major (140-character) bomb—on Sunday, the industry mogul tweeted, “Lots of good music coming from @Epic_Records in the next few weeks. Stay tuned music fans. Welcome back Fiona!” Reid later clarified: “YES Fiona Apple!”
Miss Apple has had more than ample time to put together an album’s worth of new material… 2005’s Extraordinary Machine was purportedly “shelved” before a surge of fan interest renewed work on the project… so it was only a matter of time before a new Fiona Apple album saw the light of day. Still, you can’t help but hold your breath a little bit when the phrase “new Fiona Apple album” starts getting tossed around—she hasn’t been saturating the airwaves since her “Shadowboxer” heyday.
