Matador and Michael Stipe vs. YouTube

Perfume Genius ad from nils bernstein on Vimeo.

Big news this week surfaced from Matador’s claim that YouTube censored a video ad for the label’s artist Perfume Genius because of its homoerotic content (watch the ad above – on Vimeo). Michael Stipe, still an active participant – and thank God for that – on matters close to the music industry had the superb line of the week:

“For YouTube to deem this advertisement as ‘non family safe’ is dumbheaded discrimination; I find their actions in doing so disgraceful and cowardly. YouTube, shame on you. You were born of the 21st Century, now act like it.”

Amen.
