Your eyes aren’t deceiving you. There are two different groups named One Direction on the Billboard charts this week.
While the U.K. pop quintet is at No. 5 on the Billboard 200 with “Up All Night” (66,000 sold according to Nielsen SoundScan; down 28%), a California rock band with the same name enters the Heatseekers Albums chart at No. 48 with The Light (1,000; up 9%).
The latter album was released in the United States in August 2011 and has seen almost weekly sales growth since February. (About the same time the U.K. act started making waves on the Billboard charts.) The set’s cumulative sales now stand at 6,000 copies.
“We may not have Simon Cowell’s machine behind us, but we have many loyal fans,” the other One Direction tells Billboard through their rep. “We thank them for supporting our albums, and we intend to stand up for the right to Rock and Roll!”
According to the California-based group’s Facebook page, it has been “drawn into a legal dispute” with the U.K. act over the use of its name. As the U.S. group has been “using the name since November 2009” (a year before the British One Direction formed on “The X Factor”), its members are claiming they have first rights to the name.
