The number of DMCA takedown requests sent to Google has doubled in the past month – reaching almost 1.5 million URLs per week.
The figure comes from Google’s transparency report. This time last year, the number of weekly URL takedown requests filed with the search engine was at 131,577.
Over the four-week period just gone, Google received takedown requests from copyright holders and anti-piracy bodies to remove 5.7 million URLs from its search results in total.
In May this year, the BPI – on behalf of its members – claimed exclusive rights to content in 162,721 URL removal requests. According to the report today, that number now stands at 190,771.
