I’ve mentioned Songza in the last few months in these posts. It’s my favorite mobile music app at the moment for its expert curation of different music moods that I often like to listen to during the day. I discover a great number of new artists and songs because of it.
Songza is a great example of how new mobile-only focused apps can rise from nothing to prominence in a matter of weeks now. It’s an incredibly exciting time. I think there will be lots of great opportunities for nascent mobile apps to disrupt in key verticals over the next couple of years.
I emailed co-founder and Chief Content Officer of Songza, Eric Davich, and asked him if he’d answer some questions about the service.
1. Tell us about Songza. How many employees, how long since you started, how many users?
At the beginning of the summer, Songza was 6 employees. We’re now 10 employees and looking to hire some great new iOS, Android and web developers during the next few weeks.
We’ve been running Songza exclusively since 2010 since we sold our first service, AmieStreet.com, to Amazon. We released the beta version of our service last September and debuted our Music Concierge feature in early March. We announced 2 million active users in July and have grown a lot since then.
2. How were you able to start after Pandora and Spotify, go through a couple of iterations and then gain so much traction? I thought “first mover advantage” was everything?
We’ve always felt that listening to music online could be easier. Having to choose between an infinite amount of songs, radio stations, and playlists to listen to can be a very overwhelming experience and most people, when presented with that burden of choice, go back to their stale iPod.
We know from our own anecdotal experiences, as well as hundreds of hours doing one-on-one user interviews, that people listen to music the most while going about their everyday routine and their attention isn’t solely concentrated on just listening to music in a lean-forward fashion. So our goal has not been to provide access to all the music in the world, rather, our goal is to deliver you the perfect expertly-curated playlist at the right time based on contextual relevance.
