NFL player TJ Lang gained widespread attention online for a pair of viral tweets he sent about the NFL officiating crisis.
But, like the rest of us on social media, he’s got nothing on Justin Bieber.
This tweet was posted by Bieber on Wednesday, and has since gained more than 200,000 retweets on the social network:
RIP Avalanna. i love you
The pop star’s tweet references six-year old Avalanna Routh, who died of cancer Wednesday. Routh was known to fans as Mrs. Bieber after a widely publicized meeting she had with the pop star — the result of a Facebook campaign to connect with her idol as she battled a rare childhood illness.
But if you think that’s the most retweeted message in Twitter history, you’re wrong, according to the company.
“That’s a big one. But there have been other Tweets RT-ed more than that over the years ;),” a company spokesperson winked to Mashable via email.
Twitter is very guarded with information about most-popular tweets (hence the wink), so it’s hard to find anything that beat Bieber’s number. One of Lang’s messages after that controversial Monday Night Football has been retweeted some 98,000 times.
That’s more than a celebrated May tweet by Barack Obama, in which the president publicly backed same-sex marriage. It’s been retweeted more than 60,000 times.
Another tweet by the pop star from last November — a simple declaration of “I’M SEXY AND I KNOW IT” — has been retweeted more than 120,000 times.
So who has gained more retweets than Bieber’s “RIP” post? The food chain Wendy’s, for one. This tweet from June 2011 has been retweeted more than 215,000 times:
