Video: Most awkward acceptance speech ever – The Beach Boys at Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inductions in 1988

The Beach Boys’ induction into the Rock’n’Roll Hall Of Fame starts in innocent fashion with Brian Wilson offering humble, emotive insights into the band’s beginnings – his bandmates united by linked arms behind him. The stink collides with the fan at approximately the 4.51 mark, when Mike Love has been on the microphone for a minute. The warning signs are there: despite unity being the theme of Love’s monologue, the rest of the band have disappeared. Watching what follows, it’s hard not to imagine a security guard ushering the band away while barking: “Love has the microphone. Repeat: Love has the microphone.” You’ll note that the righteous fury he directs towards Paul McCartney, a lawyer, Ringo Starr, Yoko Ono, Diana Ross, more lawyers, The Beatles, Mick Jagger, Bruce Springsteen, Billy Joel and The Stones seems to be about artists’ lack of harmony. Also worth noting: Mike Love has sued various bandmates three times in the last 15 years.
