Management lessons from music legends

Besides appreciating some of the world’s best melodies, what else can we learn from Bob Dylan, Queen, Jimi Hendrix, Pink Floyd, Black Sabbath, Rolling Stones and other music legends ? A lot more than music, it seems. According to Salvador Lopez, collaborating lecturer in the department of marketing management at ESADE Business School in Barcelona, Spain, and author of the book, ROCKvolucion empresarial, rock stars set a good example for business management.

So, what do rock bands have in common with business? “I consider a rock band to be a human team with its own goals, methodologies, strategies, innovation approach, brand, positioning, customer experience and product (and a lot more). We can think of The Beatles as a rock band or as a team of entrepreneurs working with passion, being pure innovators, taking risks, following their passions, all with a goal in mind: to rock their audience (we would say ‘their clients’),” he says.

However, he adds, the fundamental differences lie in the fact that rock bands don’t have to punch a clock or respect a power hierarchy as we do in organisations. These circumstances give them a powerful scenario of creative freedom in which they can soar following their own principles.
