Toronto’s JAZZ FM91 Launches Jazz 101 The Beginners Guide to Jazz

Starting May 14th, JAZZ.FM91 will launch a new educational feature: “Jazz 101: The Beginners Guide to Jazz”. Designed for jazz fans, this 6-week course is an interactive and engaging guide to the icons and innovators. Through engaging lectures, listening, demonstration, and discussion, participants will learn from jazz experts and gain a basic understanding of jazz. The series is $125 (includes all 6 lectures) and enrollment can be made online by visiting www.jazz.fm.

Lecture objectives include: the basic structure and properties of jazz, instruments and styles; understanding the details about the history and development of jazz; an understanding of how musicians improvise and swing; and how to build a library of classic recordings, including the five most important Canadian recordings of all time.

Jazz 101: The Beginners Guide to Jazz will be taught by Mark Micklethwaite, Community Engagement and Education Manager at JAZZ.FM91. Mark is a musician, educator, jazz historian and has designed this course in collaboration with CEO and President, Ross Porter.
