The city of Austin’s Music Division has posted a series of poll questions on its Facebook page seeking feedback from musicians and businesses on difficulties they faced during the recently concluded South By Southwest music festival.
The questions — on topics including challenges for performers during the downtown festival, and whether the city should place a cap on the number of parties at specialty venues and sites — are the first step in preparations for next year’s festival, which has grown rapidly since the mid-2000s to take over most of the downtown.
The Sixth Street entertainment district had so many pedestrians on two nights that emergency vehicles would have been unable to pass through, and lines at some established venues – not just outdoor parties – spilled into rights of way for traffic. In all, police and fire departments shut down 11 events over the nine days of SXSW.
