PBS Digital Studios answers the question “what’s in a beat lab?”

PBS Digital Studios’ newest series “Beat Making Lab” follows musicians and educators Stephen Levitin (aka producer Apple Juice Kid) and UNC-Chapel Hill Professor Pierce Freelon (who’s also front man for the jazz/hip-hop quartet The Beast) as they travel around the globe and provide enthusiastic young people in underserved communities with the training and tools to create their own original music. The episode answers the question “what’s in a beat lab?” At the first Beat Making Lab — located in the Democratic Republic of Congo — Levitin and Freelon unpack the mobile music studio that’s small enough to fit in a backpack, and reveal some of the tools used create the music heard in previous episodes.
