Here’s The Thing: Alec Baldwin Interviews Dwight Gooden

This week Alec sits down with pitcher Dwight Gooden whose blistering fastball and notoriously deceptive curve ball earned him the Rookie of the Year Award in 1984. He was 19 years old. Gooden’s outstanding first three years in Major League Baseball were replaced by very public battles with alcohol and cocaine which he struggled with for much of his professional career.

Gooden talks to Alec about the appeal of drugs and the attempts he made to clean up his act, like following the advice of the team doctor who says, ‘Why don’t you just drink, but don’t do drugs?’ Dwight Gooden has a new book out, Doc: A Memoir, which chronicles everything from his complicated relationship with his father to his meteoric rise to the drugs and the toll they took on him.
