Canadian Folk Music Awards announces Calgary as host city

The Canadian Folk Music Awards, now in its 9th year, is coming to Calgary, Alberta in 2013. The gala event takes place at the University of Calgary Theatre on November 10, 2013 and features live performances from some of the best of Canada’s folk community. This year’s gala performance line-up includes Amelia Curran, James Keelaghan & Oscar Lopez, Oh My Darling, The Fretless, Lorne Elliott and duo Christina Smith & Jean Hewson. The gala is hosted, in both official languages, by CBC’s Shelagh Rogers and musician Benoit Bourque (La Bottine Souriante/Le Vent du Nord). The CFMAs will hand out twenty awards throughout the evening. Nominations for the CFMAs will be announced at a press conference in Calgary this October in downtown Calgary. Tickets for the gala are $40 and are available for purchase as of today via the University of Calgary at 403 220-7202, online at http://www.ucalgary.ca/tickets/ or in person. The CFMA’s also hosts live performances in the host city throughout the weekend which will be on sale on September 2013.

Canadian artists and groups whose albums were released in Canada between June 15, 2012 to June 14, 2013 were eligible to submit their work. Established by Canada’s burgeoning and internationally-recognized folk music community, the CFMA’s currently boast 20 categories. Five nominees are chosen for each category. A three stage jury process by 100 jurors located across Canada representing all official provinces, territories and languages determine the official winners in each category.
