Entertainment One Music has entered into a new deal with new school hip hop pioneer Chris Webby and his label Homegrown Music, who have decided to remain independent. Under this unique deal, Webby will release an EP titled The Homegrown EP on October 29, 2013, followed by his debut full-length studio album shortly after, in early 2014. eOne Music will assist with all A&R, promotion and marketing initiatives and will support the already existing Homegrown Music label and marketing team.
Alan Grunblatt, President of eOne Music, states, “We’ve been fans of Chris Webby for a long time at eOne. He’s an extraordinary artist with major upside potential, and we’re very excited for the world to hear his music.”
Webby added, “I’m extremely excited about this deal with eOne. These two projects are years in the making, and I’m very proud of the music. At this point in my career, I feel it is very important to remain independent; both the plan and partnership that we created with eOne is ideal. The hardest part is going to be waiting until October 29th to release it to my fans.”
Homegrown Music LLC was founded in 2011 by Chris Webby and Dana Biondi. The two are now considered pioneers among the current independent music surge. The multi-company conglomerate has been credited with implementing innovative strategies, forging unique partnerships, as well as creating a full scale merchandising operation. Considering the creative efforts of Chris and Homegrown, it was no surprise to find him at the number 15 spot on XXL’s “Top 30 Independent Artists in the Game” list.
In the past 4 years, Chris Webby has released 8 full length projects, 7 of which were given away completely for free. All of his releases have been known to cause a big splash. He was the first artist to ever crash the server at the largest online mixtape site, Datpiff.com (he was also the second to do it). Webby’s debut EP in 2012, There Goes The Neighborhood, not only topped the iTunes Hip-Hop charts within 24 hours of it’s release, but also boasted the number one spot on the Billboard Heatseekers chart. His most recent release, the mixtape Bars On Me, was part of DJ Drama’s wildly popular Gangsta Grillz series and featured guest appearances by Bun B, Prodigy of Mobb Deep, Jon Connor and Kid Ink among others. The mixtape was downloaded 500,000 times to date on Datpiff alone, and has been streamed and downloaded across the world countless times since.
The numbers speak for themselves. Webby’s body of work has built him a large and notoriously loyal fan base. His online presence is massive, boasting over 45 million plays on Youtube, 200,000 fans on Facebook, and 115,000 followers on Twitter. His widespread fan base not only continuously proves their ferocity online, but, through their support of his live shows, resulted in 4 of his own nationwide tours. He has sold out shows at famous venues from Webster Hall in New York to The Troubadour in LA.
