Whenever I’m asked who I’m proud to have worked with over the years, the name Jimmy Somerville is usually near the list. It was 30 years ago that Jimmy-led Bronski Beat released “Smalltown Boy,” a heart-wrenching (but with a dance beat) song about a gay kid who is bullied by his peers, rejected by his parents and forced to leave town. If you think it’s a struggle to come out now, just imagine what it was like in 1984, becoming a pop star or not.
Jimmy has delivered a powerful 30th anniversary version of the song, with just his still-astounding vocals and a piano.
And then you’ll know why Jimmy is at the top of my list.
