Beastie Boys and Butthole Surfers, live on NYC cable access TV, 1984

In 1984, hardly anyone knew who the Beastie Boys and the Butthole Surfers were. That’s how a small New York City cable access program The Scott and Gary Show were able to get the future alternative nation legends. The Beasties appeared in January 1984, not long after their pranky single “Cooky Puss” had made the rounds, and the Buttholes’ appearance dates from October 1984—their first visit to New York. The Beastie Boys were two years away from the release of Licensed to Ill, while Butthole Surfers had a their debut EP to their name.
