Annette Funicello and Bob Hope Do Ska

Getting her start as one of the original “Mouseketeers” on Walt Disney’s long-running TV show The Mickey Mouse Club, Annette Funicello was one of the 1960s’ top teen idols, helping to popularize the “Beach Party” movie genre through her campy films with actor Frankie Avalon. Lesser known is that Funicello also was a key ambassador for Jamaican music in the U.S., introducing a generation of American teens to ska with her 1964 version of Byron Lee and the Dragonaires’ “Jamaica Ska.”
