“My singing… i’ll just say it simple as possible: it’s just godly.”
– Michael Jackson in January 1980
Michael Jackson did not grant many interviews. So PBS’ Blank On Blank were excited to uncover a tape of Jackson recorded in January 1980.
Just hearing Michael at 21 is something. He was still so young, yet he seemed to see something big for himself in the near future. Note: this was a few years before he became a global icon–and regular fodder for the tabloids.
Even more interesting was the odd setup for the interview. The interviewer, John Pidgeon, was required to ask questions to Michael’s sister–13-year old Janet–who then relayed them to her brother before he would respond.
Bizarre? Media-savvy? See for yourself.
