CIMA’s recent Music In Motion study discovered that 87% of independent music companies say exporting is a key part of their business plans, while 59% say it is vital to their survival. As physical sales continue to decrease, music companies can no longer depend on traditional record sales occurring mainly within Canada.

Tapping into high demand for Canadian music abroad is an exciting prospect, but more sustained, flexible government programs will also be needed to ensure that companies can engage their artists on a global scale – especially as the Music In Motion study shows this activity becoming increasingly central to their business strategies.
