Essentials For Your Man Cave

By Mitch Rice

The mighty lion is at home on the wide plains of Africa, the tiger in the vast grasslands of India, the wolf in the dark forests of the cold north, and man? Man is most at home in a cramped basement of the family home. Otherwise known as the man cave.

Whether you have a luxurious sprawling cave or a smaller, cozy cave, there are a few things that every man needs in his space. It doesn’t matter whether you’re a sports fan, a comic book bloke, or a fine wine guy. These things are universal.

  1. A recliner – You’ve got to rest your weary feet and soul somewhere, right? Why not do it in absolute comfort with a recliner.

Recliners are great because they take up a fairly small amount of space when not in use. This means you can play games, exercise, create music, or do whatever you do, without tripping over a sofa.

If you’ve got some cash to splash consider getting a recliner with cup holders, a heated seat, or even a massage system built-in.

Recliners can even help you ease back pain and open up your body to allow better airflow. So next time someone nags you to get up, tell them your recliner is doing you good!

  1. An entertainment system – First and foremost, this needs to include a TV. No man cave is complete without a TV!

Even if you’re not into sports, a TV is needed to enjoy movies, TV shows, and video games.

When it comes to positioning your TV, you’ll want to make sure it’s at a comfortable viewing angle and free from glare.

Certain kinds of TVs like OLEDs have a wider range of viewing angles. This makes them better choices for wall mounting, for example.

Alongside a TV you’ll want some way to watch TV. Traditionally this has meant cable, but nowadays it could be something more inconspicuous.

If you don’t fancy paying for cable, consider an Amazon Firestick, Google Chromecast, or other wireless casting devices.

You could always invest in a smart TV which removes the need for a casting device.

If you’re a bit of a gamer, you’ll want to include your favorite games console in your entertainment system. The most recent consoles can also act as devices to steam your favorite films and shows.

The final thing you’ll want to include in your entertainment system is a decent soundbar or speakers.

Soundbars are a great space-saving choice because they can sit under your TV. If you’ve got the room and the cash a nice set of surround sound speakers will up your viewing experience.

  1. Fridge and/or bar – Leaving the confines of your cave is to be avoided at all costs! Who can be bothered with the hustle and bustle of the rest of the house when you’re trying to relax?

To that end, you need to have a fridge for drinks and snacks.

Try to remember that minifridges are for dorm rooms and offices. Your man cave deserves a proper beverage fridge.

Beverage fridges are usually small enough to fit under a desk or counter, but large enough to hold real drinks and snacks.

If you have space and the cash, a bar is an ideal way to add a bit of sophistication to your man cave.

  1. Personal touches – This man cave is your space, your lair, your habitat. It should reflect who you are as a person. It should make you feel at home and comfortable.

Your personal touches could be sports paraphernalia decorating the walls, movie posters, collectibles, instruments, photographs, or keepsakes.

Whatever it is that makes you feel all warm and fuzzy inside, it deserves to be displayed well.

Invest in frames for your posters, photographs, or tickets. They will help preserve the paper and make them look fancy!

If you have collectible items, spring for some display cabinets. That way, all your items can be seen without cluttering the room.
  2. Games table – Whether you’re into pool, billiards, poker, or board games, there is a table out there for you!

You could go for a cheap and cheerful table that gets the job done, or you could save up for a custom made table that meets your every need.

It’s all down to your budget and how much you plan to use the table.

If you’re going for a poker or board game table, it’s always a good idea to choose a table with storage options for your chips, tokens, and pieces.

Final Thoughts

Your man cave is your domain, ultimately what you put in it is up to you. The five things we’ve suggested are a great place to start.

Try to think about how you’re going to use your man cave and how it can meet your needs. If you’re going to be entertaining others, you’ll want extra seating. If you’re planning on watching a lot of movies, perhaps a popcorn machine is a good idea.

There are lots of options and ideas out there. You’re only limited by your imagination and your budget!
