By Mitch Rice

Once they make it big, many celebrities start diversifying their income streams by investing in businesses they believe in or creating their own brands in a complementary industry that they know and love. It comes at no surprise that so many musicians have decided to invest in the ever growing cannabis industry. Many musical artists have talked about their cannabis use and how they create their best work while blazed and for fans, music just happens to sound a whole lot better with an elevated mind and a two water bongs by your side.

6 cannabis brands by musicians plus honorable mentions

Each year there are dozens of new cannabis brands entering the market with a growing number of musicians trying to get their piece of the pie. When stoners hear that artists like Willie Nelson or Snoop Dogg have launched their own cannabis products, it seems like a perfect match, while others like John Legend may come at a surprise. The following are just a few cannabis brands by musicians who are not rappers or hip hop artists.

Bob Marley – Marley Natural

There’s no one that has popularized cannabis use and spread the genre of reggae to the world as much as Bob Marley. Just two years after the first states legalized recreational cannabis, the Marley family established Marley Natural in honor of the famed musician. The brand produces whole flower, pre-rolls, and vape carts divided into two categories, outdoor grown herb called Core and indoor grown flower named Studio. To assist in lighting up, the family-owned cannabis brand also offers a collection of luxury bongs, pipes, bubblers, and other smoking accessories in a sleek minimalistic design.

Willie Nelson – Willie’s Reserve

Country music legend and cannabis activist, Willie Nelson was one of the first celebrities to venture into the world of recreational cannabis. Willie’s Reserve has been around since the early days of legalization across the U.S. and continues to provide high-quality dry herb, edibles, and vape carts in collaboration with independent farmers. He recently teamed up with folk and Americana star Nathaniel Rateliff to create the Nightstache Collection.

Mickey Hart – Mind Your Head

When Mickey Hart, drummer for the Grateful Dead and three time Grammy award winner announced he was launching a cannabis brand, Deadheads weren’t surprised one bit. The band and its followers helped to form 1960s and 70s counterculture, which included partaking in ganja among other things. Hart’s brand, Mind Your Head, was inspired by creativity, mindfulness, and history as shown by his choice of offering Chemdog, a legendary strain discovered on Shakedown Street at a Grateful Dead show in the 90s. Hart explains that “Throughout my life, cannabis has played an important role in inspiring creativity and I hope that Mind Your Head cannabis activates others to find their own dimension of creativity.” Deadheads will also enjoy Garcia Handpicked, a handpicked cannabis line crafted by Jerry Garcia’s daughter Trixie honoring the band’s frontman.

Shavo Odadjian – 22Red

The System Of A Down bassist, Shavo Odadjian was inspired to combine a few of his favorite things, culture, clothing, and music. His lifestyle brand, 22Red started out as a fashion label before transitioning to cannabis after it was legalized in his home state of California. Odadjian personally handpicks, tests, and comes up with the names for all of his offerings and new cannabis strains, including a line of hemp-derived CBD products.

Carlos Santana – Mirayo by Santana

With packaging that incorporates colorful geometric patterns that draw from Santana’s Hispanic roots, Mirayo is “a sun grown cannabis line that honors the spiritual and ancient Latin heritage of the plant.” The brand offers four strains of whole dry herb (sativa, indica, hybrid, and a high CBD strain) with accompanying mini pre-rolls.

Jimmy Buffett – Coral Reefer

Currently only available in three states, Florida, Massachusetts, and Texas (for medical use only), Buffet aims to instill the carefree lifestyle and beach vibes of his music into the new cannabis brand, Coral Reefer. The brand focuses on vape pens and vape cartridges, giving a nod to his musical resume with names like Cabana Daydreamin’.
