Americana Artist KC Armstrong Revisits the Past with Swampy New Single “Someone Else Tonight”

0

Musicians revisiting their discographies can shed light on a certain time and place. It can also be a reason to revisit old songs and see if there’s a new sonic coat of paint that might bring them back to life. For Brantford, Ontario-based Americana musician KC Armstrong, the pandemic offered up time to rediscover old gems, including “Someone Else Tonight,” the latest strikingly solid single, from his Finally Crafted album, teeming with passion and verve despite the recording process being the antithesis of the original approach.

“Someone Else Tonight” was originally recorded for Ranchsongs, an album released in the mid ’80s by Armstrong’s previous band Cadillac Ranch. Armstrong says that version was “recorded live off-the-floor in about three takes with no rehearsal beforehand.” Each of the musicians simply used hand signals as cues to perform their solos as they would live in concert. For this latest version created during the pandemic, the recording process was deliberate, requiring patience as files were sent back and forth via e-mail after recording was done in each musician’s home studio.

Armstrong says he started with drum tracks, then bass, 12-string acoustic guitar, and a scratch vocal. “Doing the recording in this fashion, you might think there would be no synergy between the musicians; each in their own cities, each at a different time – but this was not the case,” he says.

Guest musician Bobby Brioux, who plays mandolin on “Someone Else Tonight,” was given the “bare-bones backing tracks” as a guide but asked to “play away.” While editing that particular piece, Armstrong received keyboardist Steve O’Connor’s accordion and Wurlitzer parts who had only been given the request to make the music “eerie and foreboding.” Neither Brioux nor O’Connor knew what each other was playing. But what transpired was amazing!

“It was astounding,” Armstrong says. “There was only one small bar of music in the whole song where both musicians were playing simultaneously. The rest of the song fit together perfectly while also allowing guitarist Barry Haggarty places to showcase his talents. Another cosmic bit of good fortune emerged when Armstrong unknowingly left both of Haggarty’s guitar tracks in the song. When played simultaneously, they created a gorgeous “twin solos” effect on “Someone Else Tonight.”

“Someone Else Tonight” brings to mind a swampy, dark, and mysterious collage of folk, blues, “swampy-country,” and Americana similar to the late Gordon Lightfoot and particularly Steve Earle’s 2000 album Transcendental Blues. Led Zeppelin’s intro to “No Quarter” sounds like a subtle source of inspiration as well. A Celtic hue adds great results as the song has a surefire, steady pace demanding your attention. The homestretch is also fantastic as the interplay between the instruments and vocals creates music far greater than the sum of its parts. Alongside Armstrong (who sings and plays bass), Brioux, Haggarty, and Steve O’Connor, additional musicians on “Someone Else Tonight” include vocalist MaryEllen Allen, saxophonist Sean O’Connor, guitarist Scott Utting and drummer Jake Adams.

“Someone Else Tonight” is the latest offering from KC Armstrong and the follow-up to his festival single “I Hate That Sweater.” Armstrong’s witty, whimsical style brings to mind musicians like Earle, Randy Newman, Nick Lowe, and the late Ronnie Hawkins. In fact, Armstrong’s band subbed as the Hawks for the iconic rocker back in 2003. Armstrong’s then band Cadillac Ranch were slated to back Hawkins at the legendary SARS-Stock concert at Toronto’s Downsview Park before hundreds of thousands featuring the Rolling Stones and AC/DC. Sadly, Hawkins’ health resulted in the appearance never being realized. Armstrong has also worked with and shared the stage with countless others, including the late Jeff Healey, while playing festivals across Canada and throughout North America.

Now with the spectacular and magical “Someone Else Tonight,” KC Armstrong is kicking off 2025 with a bang. It’s a track you should be telling someone else about tonight, if not sooner!

5 Surprising Facts About Lou Reed’s “Transformer”

0

Lou Reed’s Transformer is a cultural artifact, a snapshot of early ’70s New York, and a masterpiece that cemented Reed as a solo force beyond The Velvet Underground. Produced by David Bowie and Mick Ronson, the album gave us legendary songs like Walk on the Wild Side, Satellite of Love, and Perfect Day. But even if you’ve had this album on repeat for decades, there’s always more to uncover. Here are five unknown facts about Transformer that will change the way you hear it forever.

1. “Walk on the Wild Side” Was a Celebration of Outsiders

At first listen, Walk on the Wild Side might sound like a voyeuristic tale of New York’s underground scene, but it was actually a love letter to the misfits, artists, and dreamers who made Andy Warhol’s Factory a cultural epicenter. Each verse immortalizes real people—Holly Woodlawn, Candy Darling, Jackie Curtis—who weren’t just characters in Reed’s song, but trailblazers in their own right. Decades later, the song remains an anthem for self-expression and living authentically, proving that Reed wasn’t just chronicling counterculture—he was celebrating it.

2. “Satellite of Love” Was Almost a Velvet Underground Song

Lou Reed first wrote Satellite of Love during his time with The Velvet Underground, but the band never recorded a proper version. A demo exists from 1970, but it’s nothing like the soaring Transformer take, complete with Bowie’s ghostly high harmonies. Bowie’s involvement added a cosmic, operatic element that completely transformed the song—no pun intended—turning it into one of Reed’s most cherished tracks.

3. “Perfect Day” Wasn’t About What You Think It Was

For years, fans debated whether Perfect Day was about love, heroin, or both. Reed himself gave cryptic answers, but those close to him believe it was a reflection of his time with first wife Bettye Kronstad, who recalled that the couple had idyllic afternoons in Central Park together. The song’s ominous outro—You’re going to reap just what you sow—hints at a darker undercurrent, which made it even more haunting when it was later used in Trainspotting’s infamous overdose scene.

4. Bowie and Ronson Saved the Album from a “Disastrous” Start

Lou Reed was an undeniable genius, but when recording started for Transformer, he was struggling with his confidence. Early sessions lacked energy, and it was Bowie and Ronson who reshaped the album’s sonic identity. Ronson arranged the lush string sections for Perfect Day and played some of Transformer’s most iconic guitar parts, while Bowie pushed Reed to embrace a more theatrical, flamboyant vocal delivery. Without their input, the album might not have reached its legendary status.

5. The Cover Photo Was a Happy Accident

The striking black-and-white cover of Transformer, with Reed’s face ghostly and overexposed, became one of rock’s most recognizable images. But photographer Mick Rock, who shot it, later revealed that the image wasn’t planned—he was experimenting with developing techniques when the contrast came out that way. The accidental effect gave Lou an almost spectral presence, perfectly suiting the album’s themes of identity, sexuality, and transformation.

Transformer was a revolution in sound, style, and storytelling. It captured the glam rock era, the grittiness of New York’s underground scene, and the essence of Lou Reed’s enigmatic artistry. Decades later, it still feels fresh, relevant, and defiant.

5 Surprising Facts About Television’s “Marquee Moon”

Some albums change music. Others define it. Television’s Marquee Moon is both. Released in 1977, this debut album from the New York band didn’t just push the boundaries of punk—it tore them down and rebuilt them with intricate guitar work, poetic lyrics, and a fearless commitment to musicianship. Even after all these years, it remains one of the most influential records of all time, shaping the sounds of post-punk, indie rock, and even jam bands. But for all its legendary status, there are still plenty of hidden details lurking in its grooves. Here are five unknown facts that will make you hear Marquee Moon in a whole new way.

1. The Title Track Was Recorded in One Take

The nearly 10-minute epic “Marquee Moon” wasn’t pieced together in a thousand overdubs—it was captured live in the studio in a single take. Guitarists Tom Verlaine and Richard Lloyd’s mesmerizing interplay, Billy Ficca’s fluid drumming, and Fred Smith’s pulsing bassline all came together in perfect synchronicity. The raw energy of that performance is why the track feels like a living, breathing thing, twisting and turning through its hypnotic solo section without losing an ounce of momentum. Verlaine was such a perfectionist that even the minor imperfections in the final recording were deemed essential to its mystique.

2. “Prove It” Almost Had a Different Title

The album’s only single, Prove It, nearly went by another name. Before the song was fully realized, Verlaine had considered calling it “Where Is the Justice?”—a phrase that appears in the song’s cryptic lyrics. While the title change seems minor, it reflects Television’s shift from their early garage-rock origins to a more sophisticated, literary songwriting style. The final version of Prove It became one of the band’s most accessible tracks, earning significant airplay in the UK and standing out as the closest thing Marquee Moon had to a radio hit.

3. The Album’s Guitar Sound Was a Rebellion Against Punk’s Simplicity

At a time when punk was all about speed, aggression, and simplicity, Marquee Moon was an outlier. Verlaine and Lloyd meticulously crafted their guitar parts, drawing inspiration from jazz, classical music, and even 1960s psychedelic rock. Unlike many of their punk contemporaries, they avoided power chords in favor of intricate, interwoven melodies. Their dueling lead guitar approach created an atmosphere unlike anything in punk at the time—more akin to the Grateful Dead’s improvisations than the three-chord attack of the Ramones. This commitment to musicality set Television apart and made Marquee Moon one of the most complex punk-adjacent records ever made.

4. Eno Almost Produced It—And That Would Have Changed Everything

Before landing in the hands of Andy Johns (who had worked with The Rolling Stones and Led Zeppelin), Marquee Moon was almost produced by Brian Eno. The band did a few early recording sessions with Eno, but they were dissatisfied with the results, feeling that he had softened their raw sound too much. Verlaine and company ultimately wanted something that retained the sharp, angular energy of their live performances. Had Eno stayed on board, Marquee Moon might have been a vastly different album—perhaps leaning more into atmospheric textures rather than the crisp, cutting guitars that define its sound.

5. Verlaine Despised the Original Album Cover

The Marquee Moon cover, featuring a stark portrait of the band against a black background, wasn’t Tom Verlaine’s first choice. He reportedly hated the way it turned out, feeling that the lighting made his face look odd and that it didn’t represent the band’s aesthetic properly. Nevertheless, the cover has become iconic, cementing Television’s image as one of the coolest, most enigmatic bands to emerge from CBGB’s legendary scene. Over the years, Verlaine softened on his dislike of the cover—but he never fully embraced it.

More than four decades later, Marquee Moon still sounds ahead of its time. Its intricate guitar lines, surreal lyrics, and ambitious arrangements make it a unique entry in rock history, standing as a testament to Television’s artistry in a world where punk, poetry, and technical brilliance collide.

Dolly Parton Embraces Red with New Dolly Wines Pinot Noir Release This Valentine’s Day

Dolly Parton is reclaiming red this Valentine’s Day season by releasing her signature, Dolly Wines Pinot Noir, the same month Jolene was released fifty-one years ago. The hand-crafted California Pinot is the perfect purchase for a Galentine’s Day gathering or a romantic Valentine’s Day dinner. Dolly has invited fans on social media this February to raise a glass, and cheers to her new “shooting star,” Pinot Noir! The beautiful, bright, ruby red Pinot Noir is the second varietal released in the United States, and the fourth globally.

Dolly posted today, “For many years I have not liked the color red, because it reminds me of that woman who tried to take my husband! Remember, ‘Jolene, Jolene, Jolene,’ but my new Pinot Noir has changed all that! I love red now. You should try it.”

Each glass of Parton’s Pinot Noir, which received a 92 point rating from one of the world’s most influential wine critics, James Suckling, is a silky sip, with a fresh palate enriched with red fruit characters and a hint of vanilla. Aromas of warm blueberry pie fresh from the oven, sweet cherries ripe from the tree, and subtle thyme dried from the family garden ensure each glass embodies a joyful celebration of togetherness year around. The Dolly Wines Pinot Noir is available now at leading retailers including Kroger, Total Wine & More, Publix and Cost Plus World Market, among others, in-store and online, priced accessibly at a suggested retail price of $14.99 USD.

“We are incredibly proud to bring Dolly Wines’ Pinot Noir to the market,” said Ming Alterman, Accolade Wines Marketing Director, Americas. “This release is a true testament to the exceptional quality and passion of our winemaking team, working in close partnership with Parton Family Cellars. With its vibrant character and exceptional craftsmanship, this Pinot Noir perfectly embodies the spirit of Dolly’s vision – a wine meant to be shared with those you love, celebrating life’s moments, both large and small.”

Last year, Dolly Wines made a white peach, sweet cream, and toasty oak flavored splash in the United States with the launch of its Chardonnay, which received an impressive 93 point rating from the prestigious Wine Enthusiast. Wine lovers and collectors alike shouldn’t miss the opportunity to add this exceptional bottle to their collections and celebrate with Dolly Wines.

Here’s The Complete Record Store Day List For 2025

0

Record Store Day was conceived in 2007 at a gathering of independent record store owners and employees as a way to celebrate and spread the word about the unique culture surrounding nearly 1400 independently-owned record stores in the US and thousands of similar stores internationally. The first Record Store Day took place on April 19, 2008. Today, Record Store Day is celebrated at independently-owned brick-and-mortar record stores around the world.

This is a day for the people who make up the world of the record store—the staff, the customers, and the artists—to come together and celebrate the unique culture of a record store and the special role they play in their communities. Special vinyl and CD releases and various promotional products are made exclusively for the day. Festivities include performances, cook-outs, body painting, meet & greets with artists, parades, DJs spinning records, and on and on. In 2008 a small list of titles was released on Record Store Day and that list has grown to include artists and labels both large and small, in every genre and price point. For several years, 60% or more of the Record Store Day Official Release List came from independent labels and distributors. The list continues to include a wide range of artists, covering the diverse taste of record stores and their customers.

On the first Record Store Day, Metallica spent hours at Rasputin Music in San Francisco meeting their fans and now each year hundreds of artista—both internationally famous and from the block–flock to record stores around the world for performances, signings, meet and greets and to fill their own shopping bags with music. In 2009, Jesse “Boots Electric” Hughes (Eagles of Death Metal) declared himself the “Record Store Day Ambassador” as a way of shouting out how important the stores were to artists and since then Joshua Homme (Eagles of Death Metal, Them Crooked Vultures, Queens of the Stone Age), Ozzy Osbourne, Iggy Pop, Jack White, Chuck D, Dave Grohl, Metallica, St. Vincent, Run The Jewels, Pearl Jam, Brandi Carlile, Fred Armisen and Taylor Swift have worn the annual ceremonial sash.

Throughout its 15 years, cities across the United States, including New York City, Los Angeles, Boise, Charleston, Raleigh and Las Vegas have declared Record Store Day an official holiday. In 2013, Co-Founder Michael Kurtz was made a Chevalier of the Ordre Des Arts et Des Letters in France, honoring Record Store Day’s contribution to the cultural and artistic life of the French people. That same year, the organizers of Record Store Day accepted the Independent Spirit Award from NARM (now the Music Biz Association). In 2015, Record Store Day was named the Marketplace Ally of the Year by A2IM, an organization of independent music labels.

While there’s only one Record Store Day a year, the organization works with both independent and major labels throughout the year to create contests, special releases and promotions in order to spotlight the benefits of supporting these independent, locally owned stores with music purchases throughout the year.   In 2010, Record Store Day coordinated its first RSD Black Friday event, which gives record stores exclusive releases as part of the attempt to redirect the focus of the biggest shopping day of the year to the desirable, special things to be found at these local, independently-owned small businesses.

In 2016, Record Store Day created RSD Summer Camp, a conference devoted to the unique business that is the independent record store. The conference provides a place for record store owners and staff to meet and interact with labels, distribution, vendors and anyone whose work places them in the orbit of a record store. RSD Summer Camp 2023 will be held in New Orleans August 8 through the 11. Contact summercamp@recordstoreday.com for more information.

In 2017, Record Store Day was a founding partner in the Making Vinyl conference, which brings together the companies and individuals responsible for the ongoing vinyl resurgence.

In 2020, due to the global pandemic which affected record stores worldwide, Record Store Day morphed into three RSD Drops dates– August 29, September 26 and October 24– and split the official List of releases between them. The focus wasn’t on parties, and shows but on celebrating the comfort, joy and fun that they bring their customers through what they sell. Even during a pandemic, record stores proved essential to their community.

In 2021, Record Store Day partnered with Think Indie Distribution and Cured Vinyl for a series of releases called RSD Essentials, bringing classic, “essential” catalog releases of all genres and decades to record store bins year-round. A partnership in 2022 with Atlantic Records created the RSD New Artist Series, introducing younger artists and fans to the beauty of physical formats and the glory of the record store with a tour of in-store appearances, signings and performances across the country.

Record Store Day 2025 will be held on April 12, 2025.

Dave Stewart Pays Tribute to Bob Dylan With ‘Dave Does Dylan’ Limited-Edition Record Store Day Vinyl Release

0

DAVE STEWART — the highly acclaimed Rock & Roll Hall of Famer, Songwriter Hall of Famer, Eurythmics co-founder, producer and renowned songwriter — has announced DAVE DOES DYLAN. Set as a limited-edition vinyl release for Record Store Day, the 14-song homage to Bob Dylan will be available at indie record stores on Saturday, April 12 via Surfdog Records.

The spirit and sonic foundation of DAVE DOES DYLAN is built with live takes, pure and unedited. Featuring just Dave Stewart on vocals and guitars recorded in one take, the album finds him performing inspired renditions of Dylan’s songs — all of which he has adored since an early age.

DAVE STEWART is also set to tape an episode of “Recorded Live at Analog” on March 22 at Analog inside The Hutton Hotel in Nashville. He’ll perform songs from DAVE DOES DYLAN with the addition of strings, pedal steel guitar, and keys. The show will air on PBS in July (exact date TBA). Tickets to attend the taping are available here.

BOB DYLAN HAS SAID: “Captain Dave is a dreamer and a fearless innovator, a visionary of high order, very delicately tractable on the surface but beneath that, he’s a slamming, thumping, battering ram, very mystical but rational and sensitive when it comes to the hot irons of art forms. An explosive musician, deft guitar player, innately recognizes the genius in other people and puts it into play without being manipulative. With him, there’s mercifully no reality to yesterday. He is incredibly gracious and soulful, can command the ship and steer the course, dragger, trawler or man of war, Captain Dave.”

DAVE STEWART SHARES: “When I was first learning the guitar, I was about 14 or 15 years old — which would’ve been like 1964 or ’65. I was insistent on getting into folk clubs, but I looked about 12 years old, so they kept me out for a while. Then one chap, Mick Elliot, took pity and allowed me to play at The George & Dragon which became the center of the folk music scene in my hometown, Sunderland N.E. England, in the 1960’s. It was like stepping into a sacred room where visionaries and rebels converged — actually, it was simply a room upstairs in a pub full of older folk singers, beer, whisky and cigarette smoke everywhere. I was allowed to sing two songs, so I would play Bob Dylan songs from his albums that my brother had left behind when he went to college.

The audience was always a bit shocked that this kid, who looked so young, was singing these lyrics — especially in that kind of folk club. It was mostly old folk music that was being played from the local area about the coal mines and about the shipyards, which I loved too…and Dylan would have loved also. I started to sing and play these Dylan songs anywhere I could; in other folk clubs, even on the street all over the north east of England. From then on, I got every Bob Dylan album — and still do to this day — on Vinyl and in every possible variation.

One day in 1985, I received a phone call from Bob Dylan while I was in the studio in Los Angeles. At first, I thought it was my friend joking when the receptionist said ‘Bob Dylan on the phone for you,’ but I could tell as soon as he spoke, it was Bob. We met up that night and we talked about everything; films, music, life, etc… and we ended up in a great Mexican place in South L.A.

He knew everybody and he said, ‘hey, why don’t we make a video tomorrow or the next day?’ It was already two in the morning, but I agreed and I helped make various videos with him during which we became great friends. Years later, I filmed “Blood In My Eyes,” which is a video I shot on two 8mm cameras — just the two of us walking around Camden town.

I’ve played on stage with Bob in London, L.A. and Tokyo, and I find conversations with him — whether on the phone or when we’re together — really relaxed and easy. As you can imagine, he is full of great observations and wisdom, all wrapped up in a poetic language. I’m so, so grateful for getting to know him personally and to now record this album of songs after years of singing them to friends and to myself. It’s been a long road and these lyrics and melodies have kept me company through the best and the worst of times. I hope my album can do the same for Dylan fans out there—who understand the mastery and the mystery Bob has bestowed on us, and still does to this day.”

Mumford & Sons Announce Intimate Live Shows Ahead of ‘Rushmere’ Album Release

0

Mumford & Sons make their eagerly awaited return to live stages next month, with the announcement of nine intimate live dates in Europe, the U.K., Australia and North America. It will be the band’s first string of headline live dates in the U.K. and Europe since 2018.

Last month, the British folk-rock band announced details of their new album, RUSHMERE, their first in seven years, for release on March 28 via Glassnote. The album’s stirring title-track can be heard HERE.

Ahead of the record’s release, Mumford & Sons head out to Europe in March for a series of small club shows in Amsterdam, Paris, and Berlin before returning to the U.K. The band then take a whistlestop trip to Sydney Opera House before finishing up with four North American shows in Los Angeles, Chicago, Toronto and Brooklyn.

Ticket information: Members of agora, the band’s fan community, will have priority access to tickets with availability for community members from Thursday, February 13. A limited number of remaining tickets will then be available through a general on-sale from 10:00am local time, Friday February 14.

Fans are advised to: sign up for agora and register their interest for the show they wish to attend before Monday, February 10, 23:59 (GMT). In order to make this as fair as possible, fans will only be able to register for one event – duplicate entries won’t be counted. Registration does not guarantee access, and not all entries will be selected.

Access to the ticket sale will be granted via unique codes. Fans will be notified and can sign in to find out whether they have access from Wednesday, February 12 at 6pm (local time to the event selected). Receiving a code does not guarantee that fans will receive tickets. Maximum order is 2 tickets.

Mumford & Sons have partnered with PLUS1 to support War Child. $1 from every ticket sold will help War Child to protect, educate, and stand up for the rights of children affected by war. https://www.warchild.org.uk/

Ahead of the live run, Mumford & Sons join forces with the likes of David Byrne, Jack White, Chris Martin and Lady Gaga to celebrate 50 years of Saturday Night Live as part of SNL: The Homecoming Concert at Radio City Hall, New York. The show will be streamed live via Peacock to U.S. viewers on February 14.

Of the band’s return, Rushmere is the spot where it all began for Mumford & Sons. The pond, located on Wimbledon Common in south-west London, is where Marcus Mumford, Ben Lovett, and Ted Dwane first hung out and imagined the initial idea of putting a band together. Rushmere was as familiar to them as the instruments they played, and is at the heart of their origin story.

RUSHMERE is the beginning for Mumford & Sons’ next phase, and it follows an intense period of creativity for the trio. The album was produced by nine-time Grammy winner Dave Cobb and recorded at RCA Studio A in Nashville, in Savannah, GA, and back in the U.K. at Marcus’ studio in Devon.

Pre-order the new album HERE.

Continuing the international success of the Mandoki Soulmates’ latest album, A Memory Of Our Future, Rock & Roll Hall of Fame Vice President Jason Hanley invited Leslie Mandoki to the Rock Hall to celebrate “30 Years Of Soulmates” in the motherland of rock music. “We are thrilled to welcome Leslie Mandoki to the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame to commemorate 30 years of Mandoki Soulmates and their latest album, A Memory of Our Future,” Hanley said, and honored Mandoki’s oft-quoted maxim that “music is the greatest unifier,” especially in this “labyrinth of crises where the compass has seemingly been lost.”

This Thursday evening in the Theater of the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in Cleveland became one of those memorable magical moments: During an evening of stories, film and music, the audience was treated to a look behind the scenes in the new film Mandoki Soulmates Inside Sound, shown here for the first time. The legendary musicians in the Soulmates are seen recording in the studio and playing live on stage; we see what backstage life is like and learn about the nearly-lost art of creating an entire album using a completely analog process, from first note to final vinyl LP. The film was followed by a Q&A with Leslie Mandoki, a devotee and master of analogue recordings, which he views as a way to honor his fans, saying he insists on their quality to send “a handwritten love letter to our audience—not a text message.” In addition, many fascinating stories about playing with the Soulmates over 30 years were recounted, including tales of band and Rock Hall members Chaka Khan, and the late Jack Bruce and Jon Lord.

Mandoki expressed his very personal gratitude to the Rock Hall and the audience: “What an honor be here in the legendary Rock & Roll Hall of Fame and to present our new album A Memory Of Our Future here. My father was right when he told me on his deathbed ‘Don’t dream your life, live your dream.’ I was 15 years old, and that became my life’s motto.”

Leslie Mandoki’s own story begins with his escape from behind the Iron Curtain to pursue freedom of musical expression, which eventually led to his work as a producer for Rock & Roll Hall of Fame inductees including Phil Collins, Chaka Khan, and Lionel Richie, as well as working in key roles with icons of rock music such as Eric Burdon, Jon Lord, Robin Gibb, and Peter Frampton, as well as Jennifer Rush und Bonnie Tyler, and ultimately to the founding of the Mandoki Soulmates band. This virtuosic meeting of musical minds has been rightly called a “band of bandleaders,” and Leslie has become known as the “Hungarian Quincy Jones,” dubbed thusly by Steve Lukather and Al Di Meola. Younger Soulmate, bassist Richard Bona, explains: “Leslie and Quincy have the same kind of essence to pull out forces and put them together to get to this result. So, it’s a wonderful gift he’s got.” The late, great Jack Bruce compared this ability to unite different characters in the band, both humanly and musically, with Duke Ellington.

In 1992, Ian Anderson, Jack Bruce and Al Di Meola became founding members of what, until then, was Leslie Mandoki’s project band, Mandoki Soulmates. Ian Anderson (Jethro Tull) describes Leslie as the “master chef in the kitchen, mixing all these exotic spices and mystical musical influences together. He is a great musician and it’s very rare that you get good musicians and good record producers in one person. He is the mastermind, we just turn up for work.” Over the years, Leslie has continued to bring new musicians into the fold, and the Soulmates have developed into a unique supergroup with 13 albums, several live DVDs, Blu-rays, and countless concerts worldwide. The result of all this was once summed up by Greg Lake (Emerson, Lake & Palmer) who simply described the Soulmates as “one of the best bands you will ever hear.”

Mandoki’s vision for the Soulmates band is to bring progressive jazz-rock back to sociopolitical relevance. For him, music has always been an expression of freedom. With intellectual, poetic lyrics, the band takes a stand on sociopolitical change. Even after more than 30 years, the Mandoki Soulmates prove that they are one of the most creative and committed bands of our time. A Memory Of Our Future impresses not only with its musical brilliance, but also with its profound messages that encourage and unite us in a challenging world. As Supertramp saxophonist and Mandoki Soulmates member John Helliwell tells it, Leslie is “a bona fide rock star who travels in the circles of presidents and prime ministers—Mikhail Gorbachev called Leslie ‘my old friend’ and told him that rock and roll was instrumental in tearing down what Churchill called the Iron Curtain. Leslie’s whole story, which he tells through his music, is about escaping oppression and standing up for freedom – and for this he was honored by Henry Kissinger“.

Mandoki explains: “In these trying times, when the bridge-builders in our society are missing or ineffective, we artists have a responsibility to respectfully, and with humility, give something back to the audience – for their decades of love, and for carrying us in their hands forward to this day.”

“Especially in New York, where I’ve recently spent much time, A Memory Of Our Future is getting traction with American media as one of the ‘most important albums of the year.’ At the Times Square billboard in New York City, our album cover beamed at me with the caption ‘Modern Day Masterpiece.’ The black swan cover image is an eye-catcher, and is prominently displayed in the trendy record stores in New York and London—and it literally shone like a light at the end of the tunnel for my Soulmate John Helliwell and me from the LED wall in London’s Waterloo Station. The euphoric reviews, especially from America, really touch me: I fled to the West through the Iron Curtain as a young musician almost 50 years ago, so this is a realization of a dream. As a teenager in the East, I was immensely proud of my seventh-generation tape copy of a copy of a copy (etc.) of a Jethro Tull album that I played (in mono) on my “Tesla” brand tape recorder. I dreamed that one day my own records would be presented in the legendary HMV flagship record store on London’s Oxford Street.” Soulmates founding member Ian Anderson of Jethro Tull says, looking back on Leslie Mandoki’s story, “Leslie often thinks of himself as a ‘refugee,’ escaping from something disagreeable and leaving the past behind. But I prefer to think of Leslie as one who arrives in a new place, with new resolve, new commitment, new optimism.”

As is customary at events like this at the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame, after the main event, Mandoki met the enthusiastic audience members, talking with them and signing CDs, LPs, and the 30 Years of Mandoki Soulmates Tour Book until late in the evening.
