Preventing Roach Infestation in Drain Pipes

Finding a roach inside your home can be disgusting for some people and seeing roaches creeping out on drains is all the scarier. It is but natural that most people have elicit reactions to cockroaches as these creepy insects are often associated with unsanitary conditions and diseases. However, roaches can thrive in almost all kinds of environments even in extreme weather conditions. Thus, it is very challenging to eradicate them in homes or establishments.

Discovering cockroaches around the house will make you think of getting rid of them immediately. Good thing there are ways to prevent roaches in home particularly in drain pipes where they frequently stay. Learning ways to free your drains from cockroaches is a good start in maintaining a roach free home.

Why do roaches love invading drains and pipes?

Drains are the most convenient entry pathways for roaches to have easy access to your home. They can easily sneak in through compromised and defective drain pipes and even settle there for good. Pipes and drains offer a perfect refuge for cockroaches providing them a steady supply of food and water while being undisturbed in their hideaway.

Keeping roaches away from drains

  • Check faucets, drains and pipes. Inspect your drains, faucets and pipes to search for damage, holes, leaks, corrosions or cracks and crevices. Minor damage can be easily fixed with a sealant providing a temporary solution.
  • Reduce food and water sources. Depleting cockroaches of possible food sources and water will discourage and keep them away from your drains. Keep the area under your sink free from garbage. Clean kitchen counters and dining area from any leftover or food residues. Do not leave dirty dishes on the sink.
  • Flush pipes. Place the plug on the sink and fill it with hot water. Once filled let it drain while running hot water down the pipes for a good 3 minutes or more. Prepare a pot of boiling water and pour down the drain.
  • Bleach can kill. Using undiluted pure bleach down the sink drain can be kill roaches by simply drowning them. However, this method could eradicate a few roaches but will not solve the roach infestation. The corrosive chemical composition of bleach is powerful and can damage pipes thus caution is needed when opting to use this method.
  • Borax powder and sugar mixture. Borax is excellent in killing roaches. This powder is often used as a laundry product. When combine with white sugar in equal parts the mixture can be a potent roach killer. You can dust the powder mixture in areas frequented by cockroaches. This will dehydrate them by ingestion and can kill them within three days. However, the powder borax sugar concoction is not ideal for drains or pipes which is a humid and wet environment.
  • Let the professional help. When there is infestation and the cockroaches are uncontrollable, it is best to seek the help of an expert pest control agent. A professional exterminator can easily identify the treatment and create a plan that can get rid of the roach infestation while maintaining a plan that will deter future cockroach invasion.
