“Every Breath You Take” by the Police, from their 1983 album Synchronicity, became the year’s biggest hit in the US and Canada, topping the Billboard Hot 100 for eight weeks. Written by Sting, it also spent four weeks at #1 in the UK and reached the top 10 worldwide. Widely regarded as the band’s signature song, it won two Grammy Awards, became the most played track in radio history, and remains one of the best-selling singles of the 1980s.
