While appearing on The Magnificent Others podcast, legendary actor Malcolm McDowell shared with host Billy Corgan the full story of how Stanley Kubrick cast him as Alex in the 1971 classic A Clockwork Orange. McDowell believed for years that Kubrick had simply seen him in Lindsay Anderson’s If…, but as Kubrick’s wife Christiane later revealed during a trip to Australia, there was more to it. Kubrick had his projectionist on standby to run If… for him and his family, and after McDowell’s first entrance, Kubrick asked to see it again — four times. After the fourth viewing, Christiane recalled, Kubrick turned to her and said, “We found our Alex.”
