The terrifying play ‘The Woman in Black’ begins its run next week at the CAA Theatre in Toronto, playing throughout the holiday season from December 4, 2025, to January 4, 2026. This classic production, which is a celebration of the power of human imagination and of theatre itself, begins with the thrilling words, “It was 9:30 on Christmas Eve…” The play was originally written for the Christmas slot at the Stephen Joseph Theatre in Scarborough, UK, and found such immense success that it moved to London’s West End, where it enjoyed a spectacular 33 year run, making it the second longest running play in world theatre history. Its legacy is tied to the long held British tradition of telling ghost stories on Christmas Eve, standing as the essential “other” Christmas ghost story alongside the famously adapted ‘A Christmas Carol’.
The London stage production ran so successfully that it featured hundreds of actors over the years, including Joseph Fiennes, who made his professional debut in the play’s fifth year and later became an international star in the Oscar winning film Shakespeare in Love. The production arriving in Toronto is a complete replicate of the original West End staging, ensuring Toronto audiences experience the full, gripping production. The cast features three acclaimed actors: David Acton as Arthur Kipps, Ben Porter as Arthur Kipps/The Actor, and James Byng as The Actor. The show is directed by Robin Herford and features a creative team including Michael Holt (Designer), Anshuman Bhatia (Lighting Designer), Sebastian Frost (Sound Designer), and Rob Mead (Original Sound Design). The production continues to delight and haunt audiences across all generations.
