A Tiny Desk First! K pop Superstars SEVENTEEN Perform Special Concert Medley At NPR Music

A major milestone for NPR Music! The globally popular K pop group SEVENTEEN recently made history as the very first K pop band to perform a Tiny Desk Concert. Following the conclusion of their latest U.S. concert in Washington, D.C., five of the thirteen members—Dino, Seungkwan, Joshua, Vernon, and Mingyu—stopped by the NPR Music office to play for what was likely their smallest audience ever.

SEVENTEEN’s name originates from the equation: thirteen members plus three teams plus one group. Those three teams focus on hip hop, vocal, and performance skills to ultimately unite as one cohesive group. Having recently celebrated their tenth anniversary with a world tour, performing in large stadiums for millions of fans, known as Carats, this intimate setting provided a unique look at the group. The members, who come from an industry known for polished sound and look, demonstrated significant trust in the Tiny Desk team by allowing themselves to be vulnerable in the space. Despite some initial nervousness, the energy from the crowd—filled with screaming fans—helped the members feel at ease as they casually conversed between songs. Their performance featured a thoughtful medley of both new and older songs, serving as an excellent sample of their extensive catalog, and ended with the powerful track “VERY NICE.”

The performance required some quick thinking, as fellow member DK was scheduled to participate but unfortunately lost his voice days before the concert. Suraya Mohamed noted the swift and professional adaptation by the performing members: “it’s important to note how Joshua, Mingyu, Seungkwan, Vernon and Dino not only learned DK’s parts quickly, but executed them flawlessly. It wasn’t easy for them to change the arrangements of the songs just one day before the shoot.” Despite DK’s absence and the rest of the group, the performance was a special moment, and NPR Music expressed gratitude for hosting the members for this historic show.
