The King Canutes deliver intelligent, skewed pop, skillfully echoing the best of early nineties Australian and Scottish indie rock traditions. This Brooklyn-London-based duo is here with their truly fantastic debut album, ‘Eastern Seaboard, Perfect Summer’, which is absolutely worthy of their majestic title. The album, released by the Montclair-based Magic Door Record Label, is a testament to the sheer dedication of Keir Woods and Richard Alwyn Fisher, capturing their unique vision across nine compelling tracks. Ray Ketchem, the renowned producer known for his work with Guided by Voices, handled the production, mixing, and mastering at his Magic Door Recording Studio. The whole vibe focuses on those hard-earned life lessons, blending everyday ups and downs with vivid tales of triumph and sadness.
This music feels like the perfect mix between The Go-Betweens and the long-distance commitment of The Postal Service, expanding on the sound they started forging back in the early 2000s. You will not believe the roster of world-class artists they brought in from the NYC indie scene, including Mac Gollehon, Kevin March, and Dave Derby. If you are looking for that intelligent, catchy indie sound, make sure you check out the focus track “The Mixture as Before” and their pre-released single “Cars and Girls.”
