The Toronto Jazz Festival is wasting absolutely no time getting audiences excited for its 39th season, dropping the names of four headlining concerts that instantly reflect the worldwide pulse of contemporary jazz. Artistic Director Josh Grossman notes that each of these boundary-pushing artists embodies the daring spirit driving jazz forward, and their diverse, global perspectives firmly establish Toronto as a massive music destination. The initial lineup is sensational, featuring Canadian favorite Emilie-Claire Barlow returning to Koerner Hall on June 23rd with her elegant Quebec repertoire tribute ‘La plus belle saison,’ followed by London’s radiant Afrobeat collective Kokoroko hitting the Phoenix Concert Theatre on June 25th with their joyful sound from the new album ‘Tuff Times Never Last’. The powerhouse programming continues on June 27th with GRAMMY-winning virtuoso Hiromi and her quartet Sonicwonder at Koerner Hall, sharing the evening with French-Lebanese trumpet master Ibrahim Maalouf, who leads his T.O.M.A. tour at the Danforth Music Hall for a jubilant blend of musical cultures.
