Della Mae release “Family Tree,” the second single from their upcoming album ‘Magic Accident’, arriving January 23 via Compass Records. Band founder and fiddler Kimber Ludiker channels the modal, Appalachian fiddle tune tradition on the new single, co-written with Della Mae’s guitarist Avril Smith and singer-songwriter Becky Warren. The track offers one of the album’s most bluegrass-heavy moments with Ludiker’s hard driving fiddle propelled by Alison Brown’s banjo, delivering a meditation on generational trauma, how to recognize the cycle, cope with it, and ultimately break it. ‘Magic Accident’ marks the first full length release from Della Mae since 2021’s ‘Family Reunion’, showcasing the band’s vocal strength, instrumental skill and songwriting prowess on a set of mostly original songs drawing inspiration from Americana-influenced tracks, hard-driving bluegrass romps, and dreamy indie-folk-inspired material.
The band explains the new project: “We are incredibly proud to share this album, produced by our hero Alison Brown. Magic Accident explores the complexity of being human and the drive to seize joy and possibility amid the sheer improbability of being here at all. Each of us contributed songs to this project, making it our most collaborative record to date, and it features co-writes with artists we’ve long admired.” Since forming in Boston in 2010, Della Mae has demonstrated to the roots music community that an all-women band operates far beyond novelty. Their 2013 Rounder Records release ‘This World Oft Can Be’ earned their first GRAMMY nomination for Best Bluegrass Album, with the International Bluegrass Music Association naming them Emerging Artist of the Year the same year. Over the years, Della Mae has performed in more than 30 countries representing the U.S. State Department and played at nearly every major festival on the U.S. roots music circuit.
