Indie-Folk Songwriter Shakey Graves Announces ‘Fondness, Etc.’ Album

Austin indie-folk songwriter Shakey Graves will release his fifth studio album ‘Fondness, Etc.’ on May 15 via Secret Identity and Dualtone Records. The new record finds Graves returning to a stripped-down, home-recorded approach shaped by family life and a renewed focus on writing music for himself. Alongside the announcement, he shared the single “Time Flies,” a moving cover of a song by Frankie Sunswept featuring a lush string quartet arranged by David J. Pierce and a soaring guitar solo from Zeke Jarmon.

Graves recorded the album in his home studio over a focused one-month stretch using a pair of Tascam tape machines. The lo-fi sessions encouraged spontaneity and captured moments that would normally be polished away. “Catching the foundation of a song on tape means that you have to commit to a sound and accept what might initially be seen as mistakes,” Graves said. “Often these little strange moments, like a bird screaming in the background or a train passing by my house, sneak into the track and become textures themselves.”

The nine-song album reflects on growth, family, and the shifting nature of identity over time. “I only had a little time, so I made a little album,” Graves said. “But it ended up being a huge lesson for me. I’ll always remember this strange time in my life, and now, since I trapped it in tape, you’ll be able to hear that memory yourself.” Emerging from Austin’s DIY scene as a one-man band with a guitar and suitcase kick drum, Graves continues that spirit here with an intimate, folk-rooted record shaped by imperfection and lived experience.
