White Denim’s James Petralli Gets Down And Dirty On New Single “Ruby” From Upcoming Album ’13’

White Denim are back with a new single and a full album locked and loaded. James Petralli and company share “Ruby” today, a down-dirty country-leaning track, ahead of their thirteenth album ’13’, out April 24 via Bella Union.

“Ruby” has a origin story as interesting as the song itself. Petralli wrote an early version years ago, the melody surfacing and fading on repeat until a batch of warbling flea market cassette recorders sparked a connection to the opening texture of the Rolling Stones’ “Street Fighting Man.” That’s when he chased it in earnest. The result is exactly the kind of rock-and-roll archaeology White Denim do better than almost anyone working today.

’13’ is groove-heavy and wide-ranging, pulling from funk, dubby calypso, soul, blues, and sunshine-pop. It follows earlier album cuts “(God Created) Lock And Key” and “Hired Hand #2,” and carries the same questing spirit the Austin-formed band has carried for nearly twenty years. The album title earns its weight too. Petralli was born on the thirteenth of August, this is the band’s thirteenth album, and the number itself cuts both ways, signifying creativity and independence on one side, chaos and misfortune on the other.

A massive run of tour dates is on now, stretching across the US, UK, Ireland, and Europe through October. Tickets are on sale now.
