Kula Shaker, consistently one of Britain’s most exhilarating live bands, has opened a fantastic window into their ambitious new era with the release of the new track, “Be Merciful.” This new song arrives ahead of their anticipated album ‘Wormslayer’, which is set for release on January 30th. The band has been amplifying anticipation for the record with the singles “Good Money,” “Charge of the Light Brigade,” and “Broke as Folk,” and “Be Merciful” further elevates the excitement. This new track is a classic Kula Shaker deep cut, part folk song and part soulful lament, which actually began almost twenty years ago as an acoustic demo produced by electronic pioneer Mark Pritchard—a vinyl bootleg of this demo has since become a highly collectible seven inch single.
Frontman Crispian Mills explains the unique journey of the song, noting, “There was a limited vinyl pressing, but it was such an obscure release. I wasn’t sure if it had even happened until, years later, fans would ask me to sign their copies. The song always had a special quality though, and Kula Shaker would play it from time to time and we found it really worked alongside the other tracks on ‘Wormslayer.’” He adds that they wisely kept a lot of Mark’s original ideas: his spooky mellotrons and analog ambient spaces, then dialled in the power and live energy of a band performance, with the stunning final result being electric. ‘Wormslayer’ is an album that never stays in one lane, detouring beyond its electrifying psychedelic heartbeat and into gothic crooning, pastoral folk, and expansive mantra metal.
The band has just announced details of ‘The Inner Circle Shows’, a series of rare, intimate performances in small rooms across the UK, where they will strip back the noise and reconnect with fans in a closer setting. This run starts at Liverpool’s legendary Cavern Club, where the band will be awarded a brick in the Cavern Wall of Fame as they play their smallest show in 20 years. 2026 will see Kula Shaker head out on a full UK headline tour, which culminates in London at the Islington Assembly Hall, and they have also announced a subsequent European tour. All shows will be illuminated by the mind bending vision of The Mad Alchemist Liquid Light Show.
