Bay Area hip hop trailblazers Digital Underground mark 35 years of their landmark debut ‘Sex Packets’ with a newly remastered and expanded anniversary edition, arriving March 27 via Tommy Boy Records. The groundbreaking album that introduced “The Humpty Dance” and “Doowutchyalike” returns with redesigned 3-D artwork and a slate of rare and previously unreleased material.
Available on 180-gram light blue and black on clear splatter 2LP vinyl, 2CD and digital formats, ‘Sex Packets (35th Anniversary)’ includes “A Tribute to the Early Days,” “The Humpty Dance (Humpstramental Mix),” the previously unreleased “Blue View,” and the full version of “Gutfest ’89.” The digital edition also features the exclusive “Mini-Hump Radio Mix” of “The Humpty Dance,” with all five bonus tracks available to stream for the first time.
Physical editions include a 12-page booklet with archival photos and liner notes by Atron Gregory. The gatefold, created with Lovepop, opens into a three-dimensional pop-up recording studio inspired by original artwork from Gregory “Shock G” Jacobs, who also created art under the name Rackadelic. A new lyric video for “Freaks of the Industry” arrives March 20.
Upon its 1990 release, ‘Sex Packets’ reshaped hip hop’s soundscape with P-Funk influences, Miami bass energy and unforgettable characters like Humpty Hump. The album went platinum, with “The Humpty Dance” reaching No. 1 on Billboard’s Hot Rap Singles chart and No. 11 on the Hot 100. Thirty-five years later, its humor, groove and imagination continue to resonate.
