5 Unknown Facts About Aretha Franklin’s Iconic Album “I Never Loved a Man the Way I Love You”

0

Aretha Franklin’s tenth studio album, I Never Loved a Man the Way I Love You, is an unforgettable part of music history. While many know it for its breakthrough success and legendary tracks like “Respect,” here are five lesser-known facts about the making and impact of this album:

  1. A Rocky Start in Muscle Shoals
The title track was recorded at FAME Studios in Muscle Shoals, Alabama, but the session didn’t go smoothly. An altercation broke out between Aretha’s then-husband, Ted White, trumpeter Ken Laxton, and FAME Studios owner Rick Hall, forcing the session to be cut short. The album’s completion was moved to Atlantic Studios in New York City, where many of the tracks were finished.
  2. Unfinished Yet Perfect
“Do Right Woman, Do Right Man” was left incomplete at FAME Studios due to the abrupt end of the session. The Muscle Shoals rhythm section had to be flown to New York to finish the song. Interestingly, there was a discrepancy in tape speeds between the two studios, which caused the piano on the final recording to be slightly out of tune—a fact producer Chips Moman later regretted.
  3. A Columbia Records Departure
This album marked a significant turning point for Franklin, as it was her first release with Atlantic Records after nine less-successful jazz albums with Columbia Records. This shift allowed her to explore her soul roots, ultimately bringing her the commercial success and recognition she deserved.
  4. Rolling Stone’s Mixed Review
Although the album is now hailed as one of the greatest of all time, its initial reception was not all praise. Rolling Stone criticized it for weak production and sidemen, stating the drums weren’t hard enough and the guitar lacked strength. However, the album has since been reappraised, now ranking #13 on Rolling Stone’s 2020 list of “The 500 Greatest Albums of All Time.” and in 2002, they placed the album at #1 on their “Women in Rock: 50 Essential Albums” list.
  5. Those Musicians. Oh Those Musicians
While Aretha Franklin’s powerhouse vocals steal the spotlight, I Never Loved a Man the Way I Love You featured an incredible lineup of musicians who helped shape its iconic sound. Guitarists like Chips Moman and Jimmy Johnson brought depth to the album’s soulful grooves, while Spooner Oldham, a legendary session musician, contributed his signature keyboards and piano. The rhythm section was anchored by Tommy Cogbill on bass and Gene Chrisman and Roger Hawkins on drums, whose tight, nuanced playing added weight to the tracks.
The album also had a brilliant brass section with trumpeter Melvin Lastie and saxophonists King Curtis (tenor) and Willie Bridges (baritone), whose horn arrangements added richness and texture to tracks like “Respect” and “Save Me.” Additionally, the backup vocals were nothing short of extraordinary, featuring Franklin’s sisters Carolyn and Erma Franklin, alongside Cissy Houston (mother of Whitney Houston). Their harmonies provided a soulful complement to Aretha’s lead vocals, creating an unbeatable blend of voices that lifted tracks like “Do Right Woman, Do Right Man” to the sky. Together, these musicians and singers formed the perfect foundation for Franklin’s voice, creating an album that remains timeless in its impact and influence.

Today, Disney+ announced that Beatles 64, an all-new documentary from producer Martin Scorsese and director David Tedeschi, will stream exclusively on Disney+ beginning November 29, 2024. The film captures the electrifying moment of The Beatles’ first visit to America. Featuring never-before-seen footage of the band and the legions of young fans who helped fuel their ascendance, the film gives a rare glimpse into when The Beatles became the most influential and beloved band of all time.

On February 7, 1964, The Beatles arrived in New York City to unprecedented excitement and hysteria. From the instant they landed at Kennedy Airport, met by thousands of fans, Beatlemania swept New York and the entire country. Their thrilling debut performance on The Ed Sullivan Show captivated more than 73 million viewers, the most watched television event of its time. Beatles 64 presents the spectacle, but also tells a more intimate behind the scenes story, capturing the camaraderie of John, Paul, George, and Ringo as they experienced unimaginable fame.

The film includes rare footage filmed by pioneering documentarians Albert and David Maysles, beautifully restored in 4K by Park Road Post in New Zealand. The live performances from The Beatles first American concert at the Washington, DC Coliseum and their Ed Sullivan appearances were demixed by WingNut Films and remixed by Giles Martin. Spotlighting this singular cultural moment and its continued resonance today, the music and footage are augmented by newly filmed interviews with Paul and Ringo, as well as fans whose lives were transformed by The Beatles.

Beatles 64 is directed by David Tedeschi and produced by Martin Scorsese, Margaret Bodde, Paul McCartney, Ringo Starr, Olivia Harrison, Sean Ono Lennon, Jonathan Clyde, Mikaela Beardsley, with Jeff Jones and Rick Yorn serving as executive producers.

Coinciding with the film’s Disney+ release, seven American Beatles albums have been analog cut for 180-gram audiophile vinyl from their original mono master tapes for global release on November 22 by Apple Corps Ltd./Capitol/UMe. Originally compiled for U.S. release between January 1964 and March 1965 by Capitol Records and United Artists, these mono albums have been out of print on vinyl since 1995. Meet The Beatles! The Beatles’ Second AlbumA Hard Day’s Night (Original Motion Picture Sound Track); Something NewThe Beatles’ Story (2LP); Beatles ’65; and The Early Beatles are available now for preorder in a new vinyl box set titled The Beatles: 1964 U.S. Albums In Mono, with six of the titles also available individually.

Low Cut Connie Announces First-Ever Live Album ‘CONNIE LIVE’ out November 1

0

October 16, 2024: Today, Low Cut Connie announced his first-ever live album CONNIE LIVE that will be released on November 1 via Contender Records. The 13-song collection is a companion to Adam Weiner’s concert film and documentary ART DEALERS that was recently released theatrically around the country and is now available for purchase on-demand and physically. The recordings were culled from the band’s New York City concerts at Sony Hall and the Blue Note in April of 2022 and marks the first time Weiner captures the cathartic and chaotic power of Low Cut Connie’s live shows on record.

About CONNIE LIVE, Adam Weiner explains: “Low Cut Connie is an experiment. It’s always been a collaboration between me, the band and the audience – to see how high we can climb. This is the first live album I’ve done, and it feels like the capper on a WILD decade of work and chaos. As Lou Reed says, ‘My life was saved by rock n roll.’ Here’s to more magic nites together.”

On October 1, Weiner released his ART DEALERS film to praise from The Philadelphia Inquirer, Rolling Stone, Dallas Observer, No Film School, Philly Voice, BrooklynVegan and Film Threat, who in their 9/10 star review proclaimed “ART DEALERS is a must-see documentary.” It premiered last year at the Richmond International Film Festival (where it was awarded with their 2023 Artistic Vision Award), and was followed by screenings at the Philadelphia Film Festival and Minneapolis’ Sound Unseen Music + Film Festival.

Rolling Stone spoke with Weiner about the film, proclaiming “As a music doc, Art Dealers succeeds on the strength of the musicians it profiles: not just the group’s flamboyant frontman, but the ragtag bunch of players who join him as he schleps his piano around the country. As a concert film, it expertly summons the sweaty revival that is a Low Cut Connie gig by culling the best from three shows at New York’s Sony Hall and jazz outpost the Blue Note.”

The film’s release follows the one year anniversary of Low Cut Connie’s studio album ART DEALERS, which The Nashville Scene called “the band’s masterpiece.” No Depression proclaimed “Experiencing Weiner in his element, whether on the new record ART DEALERS, its accompanying film, or live, is a gift of melody, messages, and community.” Earlier this year, Low Cut Connie released a reimagined version of the album’s single “ARE YOU GONNA RUN?” that was remixed by Little Steven and adds his signature lead guitar and backing vocals.

CONNIE LIVE track list:
1) All These Kids Are Way Too High
2) Rio
3) Sleaze Me On
4) Big Boy
5) If I Die
6) Charyse
7) Big Thighs, NJ

Andrew Farriss of INXS to Make Grand Ole Opry Debut on December 14

0

Andrew Farriss, best known as the co-founder and creative powerhouse behind the legendary band INXS, will mark a major milestone in his career by making his Grand Ole Opry debut on Saturday, December 14.

Farriss, whose songwriting and musical contributions helped shape the sound of INXS and drive their success to over 80 million albums sold worldwide, is now stepping onto one of America’s most revered stages. The Grand Ole Opry is a place of deep-rooted tradition, where countless country music legends like Johnny Cash, Dolly Parton, and Garth Brooks have graced the stage. For Farriss, a global rock icon, this performance marks not only a personal achievement but a merging of two worlds – the international rock stage and the heart of American country music.

While INXS achieved major success with 7 U.S. Top 10 Singles, 3 Grammy nominations, and an induction into the ARIA Hall of Fame, Farriss is now channeling his creativity into a new direction, one deeply influenced by American roots and country music. His self-titled debut solo album blends Americana, rhythm, and country, revealing a new dimension to the artist behind some of the most memorable songs of the last 40 years.

His latest release, “Something Stronger,” is a bold track that underscores his deep connection to the American musical landscape, infusing southern rock with country flair. Co-written with multi-award-winning songwriter Lawrie Minson, the song is a testament to Farriss’ ability to evolve while staying true to his musical roots. Over the past 15 years, Andrew has built strong songwriting connections with writers, many based in Nashville, while transitioning from his rock and funk roots to his signature blend of country and Americana. His upcoming Opry performance offers fans a rare chance to experience his unique Americana and country-inspired sound live on such an iconic stage.

Beyond his solo work, Farriss’ songwriting legacy extends to producing and collaborating with global talents. In addition to writing for artists like Tom Jones and Dua Lipa, whose hit “Break My Heart” charted internationally, Farriss’ versatility and influence continue to resonate across genres. However, it’s his passion for country and Americana that has brought him to the Opry, and he couldn’t be more thrilled to share this part of his journey with fans.

With a career spanning four decades, Farriss’ Grand Ole Opry debut is not just a nod to his musical past but a look toward his future. As he steps onto the stage in Nashville, he’ll be joining an elite group of performers whose music has left an indelible mark on American culture.

For the past 32 years, Andrew and his family have owned and operated a cattle and grains farm in North West NSW, Australia. Living and working alongside cowboys and cowgirls, Andrew draws inspiration from his rural lifestyle, the rugged beauty of the land, and the authentic spirit of country music. This way of life has naturally influenced his transition into the Americana, country rock, and folk genres.

Catch Andrew Farriss live at the Grand Ole Opry on Saturday, December 14. For more information on attending, visit Opry.com.

5 Things You Didn’t Know About Liam Payne

0
Former One Direction singer Liam Payne died outside a hotel in the Argentine capital Buenos Aires. Following One Direction’s hiatus, Payne signed a recording contract with Republic Records in North America. He made his solo debut in May 2017 with the release of “Strip That Down,” the lead single from his upcoming album. The track achieved significant success, reaching number three on the UK Singles Chart and number ten on the US Billboard Hot 100, and earning platinum certification in both countries. His debut album, LP1, followed in December 2019. Since the band’s break, Payne has sold over 18 million singles and amassed more than 3.9 billion career streams in just under three years.
  • Athletic Beginnings: Before music took over his life, Liam Payne was deeply involved in athletics, particularly long-distance running. From a young age, he trained with the Wolverhampton and Bilston Athletics Club, where he excelled in cross-country events. For three consecutive years, Payne was ranked among the top three 1500m runners in the UK for his age group. His dedication to sports was a major part of his life until he shifted his focus to music.
  • Struggled with a Kidney Condition: As a child, Payne faced significant health challenges due to a scarred and dysfunctional kidney. This condition caused frequent illnesses, and to manage the pain, he endured 16 injections in his arm every morning and another 16 every evening for several years. Despite this, Payne remained resilient, and by his early teens, the kidney began functioning again, but this experience shaped his outlook on perseverance.
  • Boxing to Combat Bullying: During his school years, Payne faced bullying from older students, which deeply affected him. To cope with this, he turned to boxing at the age of 12. The sport not only provided him with a physical outlet but also helped him build mental toughness and confidence. Boxing remained an important part of his life as he navigated the pressures of adolescence and early fame.
  • First Solo Audition: Long before One Direction, Payne first auditioned for The X Factor in 2008 at just 14 years old. His performance of Frank Sinatra’s “Fly Me to the Moon” impressed the judges, but he was ultimately cut during the Boot Camp stage. However, Simon Cowell saw potential in him and encouraged Payne to return in two years, leading to his 2010 audition and eventual formation of One Direction—a pivotal moment in his career.
  • Behind-the-Scenes as a Music Producer: In addition to his vocal career, Payne had a passion for music production. He worked under the aliases “Big Payno” and “Payno,” creating remixes for various songs, including those by his former group One Direction and his ex-partner, Cheryl Cole. He delved into genres like EDM, earning praise for his creative remixes, and even collaborated with top producers like DJ Mustard and Juicy J, expanding his musical talents beyond performing.
