Did you know Steely Dan once made a jingle for Schlitz beer in 1972? Before they became legends of sophisticated rock, they crafted this catchy tune for the iconic beer brand. It’s a quirky gem that fans of the band will love hearing. While Steely Dan’s usual tracks blend jazz, rock, and smooth rhythms, this jingle offers a playful and unexpected side of the band.

‘Road Diary: Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band’ Documentary Film to Launch on Hulu and Disney+ This October
Hulu and Disney+ today announced that they will launch “Road Diary: Bruce Springsteen and The E Street Band” in October of this year. An exact launch date is forthcoming.
Springsteen and The E Street Band offer the most in-depth look ever at the creation of their legendary live performances in the new documentary featuring unprecedented, behind-the-scenes access to their 2023-2024 world tour. “Road Diary: Bruce Springsteen and The E Street Band” opens a new door to Springsteen’s creative process for fans around the world, sharing fly-on-the-wall footage of band rehearsals and special moments backstage — as well as hearing from Springsteen himself. These conversations follow Springsteen closely as he develops the story he wants to tell with this tour’s setlist — interspersed with rare archival clips of The E Street Band, underscoring themes of life, loss, mortality and community. In this way, it serves as an essential and never-before-seen chapter in an autobiographical series spanning Springsteen’s memoir “Born to Run,” “Springsteen on Broadway,” and the films “Western Stars” and “Letter to You.”
The film was directed by Springsteen’s longtime collaborator, Emmy and GRAMMY Award-winner Thom Zimny (“Western Stars,” “The Gift: The Journey of Johnny Cash,” “Springsteen on Broadway,” “Willie Nelson & Family,” “Sly”), and produced by Zimny, Jon Landau, Bruce Springsteen, Adrienne Gerard and Sean Stuart. The film begins with a one-of-a-kind look at the band’s preparation process, following them from their earliest rehearsals in Red Bank, New Jersey to performances for tens-of-thousands across continents. All the while, fans get the chance to experience professionally shot footage from the 2023-2024 tour for the first time ever — in addition to hearing firsthand from band members about performing on stage with Springsteen and how they keep the magic of The E Street Band as potent as ever.
Bruce Springsteen and The E Street Band capped the first 2024 leg of their world tour in April, a cross-country U.S. run that brought surprise guests, blistering three-hour shows and setlist rarities (totaling 60 different songs through 11 performances). The band is in the midst of playing 25 shows throughout Europe this spring and summer — after last year’s European tour sold 1.6 million tickets — and will return to North America for more dates from August through late November.
James Brown’s Electrifying 1971 Rome Performance: A Soul Legend in Full Force
My Next Read: “The Devil’s Music: How Christians Inspired, Condemned, and Embraced Rock ’n’ Rol” by Randall J. Stephens
When rock ’n’ roll emerged in the 1950s, ministers denounced it from their pulpits and Sunday school teachers warned of the music’s demonic origins. The big beat, said Billy Graham, was “ever working in the world for evil.” Yet by the early 2000s Christian rock had become a billion-dollar industry. The Devil’s Music tells the story of this transformation.
Rock’s origins lie in part with the energetic Southern Pentecostal churches where Elvis, Little Richard, James Brown, and other pioneers of the genre worshipped as children. Randall J. Stephens shows that the music, styles, and ideas of tongue-speaking churches powerfully influenced these early performers. As rock ’n’ roll’s popularity grew, white preachers tried to distance their flock from this “blasphemous jungle music,” with little success. By the 1960s, Christian leaders feared the Beatles really were more popular than Jesus, as John Lennon claimed.
Stephens argues that in the early days of rock ’n’ roll, faith served as a vehicle for whites’ racial fears. A decade later, evangelical Christians were at odds with the counterculture and the antiwar movement. By associating the music of blacks and hippies with godlessness, believers used their faith to justify racism and conservative politics. But in a reversal of strategy in the early 1970s, the same evangelicals embraced Christian rock as a way to express Jesus’s message within their own religious community and project it into a secular world. In Stephens’s compelling narrative, the result was a powerful fusion of conservatism and popular culture whose effects are still felt today.
Genesis’ 14 Studio Albums To Be Reissued On 180g Vinyl Worldwide
This year, 14 Genesis studio albums released between 1970 and 1997 will be reissued on vinyl worldwide.
Pressed on 180g vinyl, the reissues—featuring Nick Davis mixed and remastered versions—will be available throughout the year. Foxtrot, The Lamb Lies Down On Broadway (2LP), Duke, Abacab, Genesis, Nursery Cryme, Selling England By The Pound, Wind & Wuthering, We Can’t Dance (2LP), Calling All Stations (2LP), A Trick Of The Tail, …And Then There Were Three…, and Invisible Touch are available HERE with Trespass coming September 27th.
The albums follow the Rock and Roll Hall of Famers’ journey to become one of the best-selling bands in the world. Formed in 1967 by school friends Peter Gabriel, Tony Banks, Anthony Phillips, and Mike Rutherford, the band’s lineup solidified in the early ’70s with the addition of drummer Phil Collins and guitarist Steve Hackett. They established themselves as prog-rock innovators with albums like Trespass (1970) and Selling England by the Pound (1973).
After Gabriel’s departure in 1975, Collins took over as frontman. By the late ’70s, the band had transformed into a pop-oriented trio, scoring hits with “Follow You Follow Me” and “Misunderstanding” from And Then There Were Three… (1978) and Duke (1980).
Each member pursued successful solo careers in the ’80s while Genesis dominated international charts with a string of six platinum and multi-platinum albums, including Abacab, Genesis, and Invisible Touch. In 1991, We Can’t Dance marked Collins’ final studio album with the band. Banks and Rutherford returned in 1997 with singer Ray Wilson for Calling All Stations, the group’s final studio album.
Trespass (1970) marked the beginning of Genesis’ progressive rock phase, exploring multifaceted song structures and mythological themes on tracks like “The Knife” and “Stagnation.”
Nursery Cryme (1971) featured the debut of Collins and Hackett and established the band’s signature sound with intricate musical passages and theatrical storytelling on “The Musical Box” and “The Return of the Giant Hogweed.”
Foxtrot (1972) remains a landmark in prog rock and includes the epic “Supper’s Ready,” a 23-minute suite showcasing Genesis’ ambitious compositional style and lyrical depth. The album charted at No. 12 on the UK. Albums, No. 15 on the French Albums chart, and No. 15 on the Italian Albums.
Selling England By The Pound (1973) is widely regarded as one of the band’s finest, combining lyrics about English life with complex, melodic instrumentation on songs like “Dancing With The Moonlit Knight” and “Firth Of Fifth” with its iconic piano introduction.
The Lamb Lies Down On Broadway (1974) is a double concept album that tells the surreal story of Rael using elaborate sounds and lyrical imagery. It was Gabriel’s final album with Genesis and features experimental tracks like “In The Cage” and the haunting “Carpet Crawlers.”
A Trick Of The Tail (1976), the first with Collins on vocals, maintained the band’s progressive rock tradition with virtuosic playing on “Dancing On A Volcano” while highlighting its melodic sensibility on “Ripples” and “Entangled.”
Wind & Wuthering (1976), the last with Hackett, demonstrated the band’s ability to craft intricate, emotionally resonant songs like “Blood On The Rooftops” and “One For The Vine.”
…And Then There Were Three… (1978), the first album released as a trio, retained some progressive rock elements but marked a shift toward a more accessible sound. The single “Follow You Follow Me” became the band’s first major hit.
Duke (1980) offered an ambitious blend of prog rock and pop sensibilities on the hit singles “Duchess,” “Misunderstanding,” and “Turn It On Again.” It was the band’s first No. 1 album in the U.K., reaching No. 11 in America.
Abacab (1981) marked a significant stylistic shift as Genesis embraced a more radio-friendly sound and leaner production. It yielded three Top 40 hits in the U.S. with “Abacab,” “Man On The Corner,” and “No Reply At All,” which featured the horn section from Earth, Wind & Fire.
Genesis (1983) captured the group’s evolving sound, mixing pop and rock with darker themes on singles like “Mama,” “That’s All,” and “Taking It All Too Hard.” The album reached the Top 5 across Europe, hitting No. 1 in the UK and Germany.
Invisible Touch (1986) was Genesis’ most commercially successful album, peaking at No. 1 in Canada, the UK, and New Zealand and reaching the Top 5 across most of Europe. The title track, “In Too Deep,” “Land Of Confusion,” and “Tonight, Tonight, Tonight” were all Top 5 hits.
We Can’t Dance (1991), the final album with Collins, ended an era for the band on a high note, becoming Genesis’ fifth consecutive No. 1 album in the UK, as well as in Austria, Belgium, Holland, Germany, and Switzerland. The hits continued with “No Son Of Mine,” “Hold On My Heart,” and the GRAMMY®-Award nominated “I Can’t Dance.”
Calling All Stations (1997), Genesis’ only album with singer Ray Wilson, explored a darker, more atmospheric direction. The album’s standout tracks include “Congo,” “Shipwrecked,” and the title track.
Genesis’ generation-spanning catalog includes 15 studio albums, six live LPs, and dozens of charting singles. In addition to its 2010 induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, the band has received a coveted Ivor Novello Award, a GRAMMY®, an American Music Award, and the inaugural Lifetime Achievement Award at Britain’s Progressive Music Awards.
