SoundExchange CEO Michael Huppe and Country Music Legend Randy Travis Call on Congress to Approve the American Music Fairness Act

On June 26, SoundExchange CEO and President Michael Huppe and country music icon Randy Travis testified before Congress on the American Music Fairness Act (H.R. 791), which would require AM/FM radio stations to pay artists royalties when their songs are played on the air.

In his testimony at a hearing of the House Judiciary Committee’s Subcommittee on Courts, Intellectual Property, and the Internet, SoundExchange CEO and President Michael Huppe highlighted that the U.S. is the only democratic nation in the world without a performance right for artists on AM/FM radio and advocated for Congress to modernize the nation’s copyright law to protect creators.

Huppe said, “Congress must set a standard that creators need to be compensated wherever and whenever their music is played – especially when their creations form the backbone of the business model like they do for AM/FM radio.”

Huppe also underscored how the current system harms artists domestically and overseas: “American musicians lose almost $300 million of taxable U.S. income each year because we lack these protections in the U.S. – this is on top of the hundreds of millions of dollars they are already missing out on domestically.”

Country music star Randy Travis also provided testimony during the hearing on behalf of creators. Randy’s remarks (delivered by his wife Mary) emphasized the need to provide fair compensation for artists who form the backbone of the music industry.

Mary Travis said, “Music is, was, and will always be his lifeline. But that lifeline has changed. And we need to acknowledge that. The days of Randy packing a car and trekking thousands of miles across the country to visit radio stations and deliver copies of his newest cuts on cassette, in hopes of having his music heard, are a thing of the past.

Of all the things we do differently than we did a century ago, one thing remains the same—the voice is still the mandatory bridge between the writer and the listener. And it’s time to do right by the ones that create the sound, the melody, the emotion that keeps the listeners coming back and the advertisers buying in.”

In 2013, Travis was hospitalized with viral cardiomyopathy and now suffers from aphasia, making it difficult to speak and sing. Earlier this year, Travis demonstrated how artificial intelligence can be a powerful tool in support of creators by using an AI model to release a new song, called “Where That Came From.”

Today, Randy and Mary Travis joined ABC’s Good Morning America to share more about his journey, the importance of the American Music Fairness Act, and how AI can positively impact the music industry with the right protections in place.

Elton John Partners with eBay to Release a Personal Collection of Pre-Loved Fashion in Support of Elton John AIDS Foundation

Alice Cooper and Rocco Mediate Team Up for New Golf Show on SiriusXM

Rock legend Alice Cooper and six-time PGA Tour winner Rocco Mediate are teaming up for a unique new golf show airing exclusively on SiriusXM.

Since taking up the game nearly 50 years ago as he was recovering from alcohol addiction, Cooper has been one of golf’s best known celebrity devotees. He would say later that he had essentially traded one addiction for another. The Rock and Roll Hall of Famer has been on the golf course six days a week for the past 30 years (even while touring), boasts an impressive four handicap, and titled his 2007 autobiography: “Alice Cooper, Golf Monster.”

Mediate and Cooper are frequent playing partners and on this show they will share stories from their careers, talk with guests from the worlds of entertainment and golf, and discuss the latest topics from the professional tour, equipment, instruction and more.

“Rolling the Rock with Alice Cooper and Rocco Mediate” will debut Tuesday, July 2 (6 pm ET) and air monthly on the SiriusXM PGA TOUR Radio channel. Known as the architect of shock rock, Alice Cooper pioneered a grandly theatrical brand of hard rock that drew inspiration from horror movies, vaudeville, and garage rock. His extraordinary career in music has spanned 60 years, starting in the 1960s as leader of the Alice Cooper Band, whose albums “School’s Out” and “Billion Dollar Babies” climbed the charts in the 1970s. Cooper and the other members of the Alice Cooper Band were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2011. As a solo artist, Cooper’s hits include “You and Me,” “I Never Cry” and “Welcome to My Nightmare.” Cooper continues to tour regularly today, performing shows worldwide with the dark and horror-themed theatrics that he’s best known for.

Mediate joined the PGA TOUR in 1986 and earned the first of his six tour wins at the 1991 Doral-Ryder Open. He finished in the top 10 in major championships four times in his career. Perhaps the most memorable of these was his runner-up finish at the 2008 U.S. Open at Torrey Pines, when he competed head-to-head against Tiger Woods over 19 playoff holes. Mediate has four wins on PGA TOUR Champions since joining in 2013, including a major victory at the 2016 Senior PGA Championship.

In addition to hosting the new “Rolling the Rock” show, Mediate hosts his own twice-a-week program, “The Rocco Hour,” Monday and Tuesday nights on SiriusXM PGA TOUR Radio.

How Big Are Spotify’s Video Podcasts? 250,000 And Counting

As one of the most powerful forms of human expression today, video ​​is becoming core to the global Spotify experience. They have been steadily investing in the format to connect creators and fans in new, deeper ways on our platform, from the recent launch of music videos in beta to testing video-based learning courses in the U.K. But the medium has seen the most growth in the podcasting space, where video is truly changing the game—in fact, more than 170 million users have watched a video podcast on Spotify.

Spotify introduced video podcasts for a select number of shows in 2020, and they’ve since made the format available for creators in nearly every market. They recently made it possible for non-hosted podcast creators to upload video to Spotify for the first time, opening up yet another avenue for their engagement and success.

All the while, video podcasts have been growing in popularity, with creators around the world leaning into the format to deepen engagement with their fans. More than half of the top 20 podcasts on Spotify have video, including heavy hitters like The Joe Rogan Experience and Call Her Daddy. The format is resonating with audiences, who want to be able to choose how to engage with their favorite content. Globally on Spotify, the average daily streams of video podcasts have increased by more than 39% year-over-year. In the U.S., nearly two-thirds of podcast listeners say they prefer shows with video, according to a recent Cumulus Media survey.

“Spotify is always evolving to better serve our users and drive success for creators,” said Jordan Newman, Head of Content Partnerships at Spotify. “With podcasts, the video format can add an additional layer of authenticity and connection for fans. That’s why we continue to hear that audiences want the ability to not only listen, but also watch their favorite shows. And we see that in the data: Audience retention increases when creators add video—and every creator wants a loyal, highly engaged fan base that keeps coming back.”

“We continue to see demand for video from both creators and their audiences,” Newman continued. “The number of creators publishing video each month keeps growing, and more and more of our users are watching. As demand continues to rise, we will keep enhancing our video capabilities.”

The rise of video content on Spotify

Globally, video consumption hours on Spotify have grown faster than audio-only consumption hours year-over-year, and audiences retain video podcasts at higher rates than audio podcasts. But what exactly does that growth look like? During VidCon 2024 this week, Spotify revealed new stats around the popularity of video as a medium on our platform.

  • There are now more than 250,000 video podcast shows on Spotify—up from 100,000 in 2023.
  • More than 170 million users have watched a video podcast on Spotify.
  • More than 70% of users consuming video podcasts watch them in the foreground.
  • On Spotify, nearly 1 in 3 U.S. podcast monthly active users (MAUs) engage with video, while nearly 1 in 4 global podcast MAUs engage with video. Globally, the number of video podcast MAUs has grown by 40% year-over-year.
  • The number of creators actively publishing video each month has grown nearly 70% year-over-year.
  • The largest markets by creators publishing video are the U.S., Brazil, and Mexico.
  • In Brazil and the Philippines, roughly 20% of all monthly active podcast creators are publishing video. This share has nearly doubled since last year.
  • At the market level, especially in Chile and Brazil, they are seeing video grow its share of total podcast consumption hours. In Chile, video hours make up a quarter of total podcast consumption hours. In Brazil, video hours make up more than 15% of total podcast consumption hours.

Indigenous Country Star Jason Benoit Leaves Fans Smiling With “1000 Mile Grin”

When musicians leave their hometown for bigger musical hubs like Austin or Nashville, it can be a double-edged sword. One obvious drawback is sacrificing being with family and friends for a chance at stardom. Some leave jaded and hurt, often with a 1000-yard stare from the experience. But for Indigenous Newfoundland musician Jason Benoit, the return to ‘The Rock’ had him heading home beaming. The result is “1000 Mile Grin,” the title of his steady, confident toe-tapping single out now from his latest EP The Deadwood.

Benoit, 2024 East Coast Music Association winner for Country Recording of the Year for Time Traveller-The Album, said he felt his time trying to make inroads along Nashville’s Music Row ran its course. “The single ‘1000 Mile Grin’ is an upbeat song about a time when I was spinning my wheels in Nashville, chasing fame, and going seemingly nowhere,” he says. “Then one day, I woke up and decided the ‘Canadian Dream’ is what I should be chasing. I packed up and headed back to my wife and kids. This song is about having a 1000-mile grin all the way there.”

It’s been a busy and productive 18 months for Benoit and that productivity is heard throughout “1000 Mile Grin.” The music seems to mirror the drive Benoit probably took back from Nashville to Newfoundland: direct, straightforward, rollicking and refreshed. The almost ideal mix of Americana and folk can be heard in Benoit’s vibrant delivery alongside some nifty banjo and mandolin work from Donovan Conran.

Benoit says after 2023’s Time Traveller- The Album, his “‘classic country spring ran dry” and “needed to find a new musical canvas to paint on for a while.” Thanks to his mother’s wide musical tastes and her Columbia House subscription, the musician took an array of early influences running from country to East Coast folk and Canadiana into “1000 Mile Grin.”

Such influences included East Coast folk artists such as Stan Rogers, Great Big Sea and The Rankin Family as well as country influences like Alan Jackson, the late Joe Diffie and Dwight Yoakam. “Also, Newfoundland has its own ecosystem of great music that we heard all our lives, but you wouldn’t probably hear about much outside of Newfoundland,” Benoit adds. It’s that trio of styles that makes the single so warm and inviting.

A two-time winner of the MusicNL’s Indigenous Artist of the Year (2021, 2023) and the 2023 MusicNL Fans Choice Entertainer of the Year, Benoit has amassed a stream of critical success including a Top 10 single (‘Gone Long Gone’), four Top 30 hits and over 13 million streams globally. He’s also supported artists such as Tenille Townes, Old Dominion, Tim Hicks and The Washboard Union. And he’s also spending some time on the other side of the microphone, hosting a weekly radio program entitled “That’s Country” which comes from Corner Brook, Newfoundland.
