Quadraphonic Albums Available For The First Time In 50 Years With Donny Hathaway, Hot Tuna And More

0

Rhino returns with the next installment of high-quality quadraphonic releases. Unavailable in quadraphonic audio for nearly 50 years, four iconic titles have been digitized from the original analog four-track Quad mixes – Donny Hathaway’s Extension Of A Man, Hot Tuna’s Burgers, Roberta Flack’s Killing Me Softly, and Seals & Croft’s Summer Breeze.

Quadraphonic sound, or 4.0 surround sound, utilizes four audio channels connected to four speakers positioned at the corners of a listening space. The multi-tracked audio is mixed dimensional, immersing the listener in an expansive soundscape.

The collection is available today as a Blu-ray disc with a quadraphonic and 192/24 stereo mix. Currently exclusive to Rhino.com and select Warner Music Group stores worldwide, each title retails for $24.98, with a bundle of all four available for $79.98. Order HERE.

Donny Hathaway’s final studio album, Extension of a Man, released in 1973, was a collaborative effort with renowned musicians Stanley Clarke (Return to Forever), Fred White, Al Kooper, Billy Preston, and many more. The album featured the transcendent track “Someday We’ll All Be Free,” which featured lyrics from Hathaway’s close friend and manager, Edward Howard.

Hot Tuna’s Burgers, released in February of 1972, marked the distinction between Jorma Kaukonen and Jack Casady’s work with Jefferson Airplane. The band’s debut studio album is filled with acoustic folk rock and electric acid rock gems like “Water Song” and “Highway Song” featuring David Crosby. “By this time, we had worked in the studio with Jefferson Airplane for more than half a decade, but this was Jack’s and my first chance to give studio substance to the music that had been growing acoustically in hotel rooms and onstage with Hot Tuna.” – Jorma Kaukonen

Roberta Flack’s 1973 Killing Me Softly was dedicated to jazz multi-instrumentalist Rahsaan Roland Kirk. The double platinum album featured the popular title track, which won the Grammy® Award for Song of the Year in 1974, and a cover of Leonard Cohen’s “Suzanne.”

Seals & Croft’s 1972 commercial breakthrough, Summer Breeze, included chart-topping folk-rock hits “Hummingbird” and the title track, peaking at No. 20 and No. 6 on the Billboard Hot 100. The album went on to place No. 7 on the Billboard Top LPs chart, their highest charting album since.

Rhino introduced the Quadio Series in June 2023, with Alice Cooper’s Billion Dollar Babies, Black Sabbath’s Paranoid, The J. Geils Band’s Nightmares…, and Jefferson Starship’s Red Octopus. This series follows the success of the sold-out Chicago and Doobie Brothers’ Quadio sets. Quadraphonic sound, also known as 4.0 surround sound, uses four audio channels connected to four speakers placed at the corners of a listening area. This type of audio provides an immersive listening experience by mixing multi-tracked audio in a dimensional way, creating an expansive soundscape for the listener. Rhino’s recordings are transferred from the original half-inch four-channel masters at a high resolution of 192/24 for a pristine sound.

The track, which is produced by Steve Aoki and The Stereotypes, the Grammy-winning producers who have crafted hits including Justin Bieber’s “Somebody to Love (feat. With its infectious energy and innovative sound, “3 Days” previews what listeners can expect from Aoki’s upcoming album. Filmed while on the road, the official music video features live footage of Aoki and Kalan performing “3 Days” live during multiple shows including Aoki’s March Ultra Music Festival headline performance. ‘Road Diary: Bruce Springsteen And The E Street Band’ Documentary Film To Launch On Hulu And Disney+ This October

0

Hulu and Disney+ today announced that they will launch “Road Diary: Bruce Springsteen and The E Street Band” in October of this year. An exact launch date is forthcoming.

Springsteen and The E Street Band offer the most in-depth look ever at the creation of their legendary live performances in the new documentary featuring unprecedented, behind-the-scenes access to their 2023-2024 world tour. “Road Diary: Bruce Springsteen and The E Street Band” opens a new door to Springsteen’s creative process for fans around the world, sharing fly-on-the-wall footage of band rehearsals and special moments backstage – as well as hearing from Springsteen himself. These conversations follow Springsteen closely as he develops the story he wants to tell with this tour’s setlist – interspersed with rare archival clips of The E Street Band, underscoring themes of life, loss, mortality and community. In this way, it serves as an essential and never-before-seen chapter in an autobiographical series spanning Springsteen’s memoir “Born to Run,” “Springsteen on Broadway,” and the films “Western Stars” and “Letter to You.”

The film was directed by Springsteen’s longtime collaborator, Emmy® and GRAMMY® Award winner Thom Zimny (“Western Stars,” “The Gift: The Journey of Johnny Cash,” “Springsteen on Broadway,” “Willie Nelson & Family,” “Sly”), and produced by Zimny, Jon Landau, Bruce Springsteen, Adrienne Gerard and Sean Stuart. The film begins with a one-of-a-kind look at the band’s preparation process, following them from their earliest rehearsals in Red Bank, New Jersey, to performances for tens-of-thousands across continents. All the while, fans get the chance to experience professionally shot footage from the 2023-2024 tour for the first time ever – in addition to hearing firsthand from band members about performing on stage with Springsteen and how they keep the magic of The E Street Band as potent as ever.

Bruce Springsteen and The E Street Band capped the first 2024 leg of their world tour in April; a cross-country U.S. run that brought surprise guests, blistering three-hour shows and setlist rarities (totaling 60 different songs through 11 performances). The band is in the midst of playing 25 shows throughout Europe this spring and summer – after last year’s European tour sold 1.6 million tickets – and will return to North America for more dates from August through late November.

Greenwich Entertainment Presents ‘Revival69: The Concert That Rocked The World’ Set For Release On June 28

0

Greenwich Entertainment has announced the June 28 release of REVIVAL69: The Concert That Rocked The World, a feature-length documentary that explores the nearly-unbelievable story of the 1969 Toronto Rock N Roll Revival. Through the iconic vérité lens of D. A. Pennebaker, once-in-a-lifetime moments are captured between the festival’s cross-generational bill – like Jim Morrison admiring Chuck Berry’s performance from side-stage, or Alice Cooper backing ‘50s icon Gene Vincent before launching into his own raucous solo show. But perhaps most remarkable is the debut of The Plastic Ono Band, and how two Canadian kids in their early 20s came to organize John Lennon’s first major performance outside The Beatles.

Promoted by John Brower and Kenny Walker, the 1969 Toronto Rock N Roll Revival marked the first time John Lennon had performed without The Beatles since before their rise to stardom – taking the stage that night with Yoko Ono, Eric Clapton, Klaus Voormann and Alan White. The behind-the-scenes road to booking Lennon is outlined in detail in the film – including near-cancellations, threats from biker gangs and rehearsals onboard transatlantic flights. The fact that Lennon quietly left The Beatles a week later (a decision that would not be made public until the following year) only adds to the historical weight of his performance captured in Revival69.

Additionally, featured throughout the documentary are commanding performances from legends in their prime like Little Richard, Bo Diddley and Jerry Lee Lewis – alongside an interview with Robby Kreiger about The Doors headlining set. First-hand perspective is also given by Alice Cooper, John Brower, Klaus Voorman and Alan White, as well as notable attendees including Geddy Lee, Robert Christgau, Claudja Barry and Shep Gordon. Revival69 is directed by Ron Chapman, written by Phyllis Ellis and produced by Chapman and Ellis alongside Trish Dolman, Andrew Williamson and Sally Blake. The film’s executive producers include Chris Hegedus, Frazer Pennebaker, Kirk D’Amico and the late D. A. Pennebaker.

NPR’s All Things Considered says Ray, throughout the course of his career, “has continued to push himself in different directions,” while People calls him a “marvel of nature.”

Beloved by his devoted community of fans and critics alike, Grammy-nominated singer-songwriter Gregory Alan Isakov has garnered over 1 billion streams and has over 7 million monthly Spotify listeners. Isakov is in the midst of a landmark year following the release of his acclaimed new album, Appaloosa Bones, via Dualtone Records and his own label, Suitcase Town Music. Appaloosa Bones is his first new album in nearly five years and is filled with his signature “emotionally evocative songwriting style” (NPR Music). Of the record, the Associated Press praises, “His new songs are relentlessly majestic, a kind of musical morphine.” In addition to the co-headline dates, Isakov will tour, supporting Appaloosa Bones, throughout this summer, including two sold-out headline shows at Colorado’s Red Rocks Amphitheatre (full itinerary here). In recent months, Isakov has collaborated with Noah Kahan and Jeremiah Fraites (of The Lumineers) on their recent record releases. Known for her dynamic and high-energy performances, Shakira will bring tracks from her new album and her legendary catalog of hits to life on stage.

Shakira first hinted at the tour during her appearance on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon last month. On Friday, the global superstar surprised fans at Coachella when she appeared during Bizarrap’s set to perform their global smash hit “Shakira: Bzrp Music Sessions, Vol. 53” and “La Fuerte,” both featured on her new album. Before exiting the stage, Shakira teased the tour news to a roaring crowd.

Coachella marks the second time in the last month that Shakira has surprised fans with a showstopping performance. Last month, following the album release, Shakira shut down New York City’s Times Square giving a crowd of 40,000+ fans a peek into the energy of her live shows when she performed at the TSX Stage. The performance included her iconic hits like “Hips Don’t Lie,” “Te Felicito/TQG,” and “Session 53,” as well as “Puntería” and “Cómo Dónde y Cuándo” from her new album.

The tour is in support of her new album, Las Mujeres Ya No Lloran, which in 24 hours of its release became the most streamed album of the year with over 10 billion, and was certified 7x platinum. The album debuted at #1 on Billboard’s Latin Album and Latin Pop Album Charts, while “Puntería” with Cardi B holds the #1 spot on both the Billboard Latin Airplay and Latin Pop Airplay charts. Listen to the album HERE!

This is Shakira’s first tour since 2018, when she wowed fans at sold out stadiums and arenas around the planet with the El Dorado World Tour, cementing her reputation as “an international pop goddess” (Rolling Stone).

Shakira is a Colombian singer-songwriter and multi-GRAMMY® award winner. She has sold over 95 million records worldwide and has won numerous awards including three GRAMMYs®, twelve Latin GRAMMYs®, and multiple World Music Awards, American Music Awards and Billboard Music Awards, to name a few. She is the most-viewed female Latin artist, and one of the top-10 artists of all time on YouTube with over 27 billion cumulative views, and the most-streamed female Latin artist of all time on Spotify.

The album is a dazzling testament to her resilience and strength, as well as music’s power to transform the most trying experiences into precious moments. In the first 24 hours it was released, the album became the most streamed album 2024 and was certified 7x Platinum.

Shakira’s previous album El Dorado ranked #1 on iTunes in 37 Countries, won Best Pop Vocal Album at the 2017 Latin GRAMMY® Awards, and Best Latin Pop Album at the 2018 GRAMMY® Awards. With over 12 billion streams, it is one of the most-streamed female albums of all time. In 24 hours, “SHAKIRA || BZRP Music Sessions #53” made history both on Spotify with over 14 million streams and on YouTube with over 52 million views. The song debuted at #9 on the Billboard Hot 100 and is another historic moment for Shakira as she is the first solo woman to debut in the Top 10 on the chart with a song recorded in Spanish. It is also the Spanish language song with the most streams in a single day in Spotify history. In September, Shakira received the MTV Michael Jackson Video Vanguard Award at the MTV Video Music Awards and in honor of her award put on a breathtaking performance of her greatest hits.

Less than a week after releasing her critically acclaimed new album, Las Mujeres Ya No Lloran, Shakira surprised a crowd of over 40,000 people, the largest audience for a performance in Times Square, with a mesmerizing performance at the TSX Stage.

That Time Coca Cola Marketed OK Soda To The Alt.Rock Crowd In 1994

0

In 1994, Coca-Cola launched OK Soda, a beverage specifically targeted at the post-modern and alternative youth culture of the early ’90s. The marketing campaign for OK Soda was unlike anything seen before from a major corporation. It was characterized by its ironic, self-referential advertising that deliberately avoided the typical feel-good messaging associated with soda commercials.
