Meshell Ndegeocello Announces ‘No More Water: The Gospel Of James Baldwin’ To Be Released Aug. 2

0

Meshell Ndegeocello has announced her second Blue Note album No More Water: The Gospel Of James Baldwin, a striking homage to the eminent writer and activist James Baldwin to be released on his Centennial: August 2, 2024. The visionary work is at once a musical experience, a church service, a celebration, a testimonial, and a call to action. With No More Water, Ndegeocello embarks on a prophetic musical odyssey that transcends boundaries and genres, delving headfirst into race, sexuality, religion, and other recurring themes explored in Baldwin’s canon. Following 2023’s The Omnichord Real Book, her acclaimed Blue Note debut which won the inaugural GRAMMY Award for Best Alternative Jazz Album, the multi-instrumentalist, singer, songwriter, and producer renders an immersive and palpable document that is as sagacious, unabashed, and introspective as Baldwin was in life.

Co-produced by Ndegeocello and guitarist Chris Bruce, No More Water features some of the bassist’s frequent collaborators including Bruce, vocalist Justin Hicks, saxophonist (and Omnichord producer) Josh Johnson, keyboardist Jebin Bruni, and drummer Abe Rounds. Also appearing on various songs are vocalist Kenita-Miller Hicks, keyboardists Jake Sherman and Julius Rodriguez, and Executive Director of the NYCPS Arts Office and trumpeter Paul Thompson. The album also showcases powerful spoken word by venerated poet Staceyann Chin and Pulitzer Prize-winning author and critic Hilton Als.

Nearly a decade in the making, the album’s origins began in 2016 during a performance at The Harlem Stage Gatehouse as part of their annual showcase honoring Baldwin. Ndegeocello had delved into Baldwin’s work the year before, including the seminal nonfiction work The Fire Next Time, which she considers “life-changing” and carries with her as a “spiritual text.” Ndegeocello says, “It was just a revelation to me, and it softened my heart in so many ways.”

“Inspired by Baldwin’s most well-known essay, Ndegeocello’s piece—often staged as a church service—employs music, sermon, text, images, and movement, all of which enter into conversation with Baldwin’s monumental and delicate essay about how black bodies were perceived not only by white Americans but by blacks themselves,” writes Als in the album’s liner notes. “The music you hear in No More Water, is Jimmy talking to Meshell and his words meeting the language of her sounds and then coming out again through a multitude of voices, a multitude of sounds and thoughts that bring Jimmy back and give him—finally—his whole and true self, that which he offered up, time and again, if only we knew then how to listen.”

Thematically, the album moves like a procession in a Black church—baptism, testimony, worship/praise, and ultimately, resurrection. For the album’s opening track and lead single, “Travel,” we are brought inside the mind of a man with suicidal thoughts, a recurring motif in much of Baldwin’s oeuvre. Setting a dystopian mood, Rodriguez’s organ and Chin’s echoing incantations help usher in Justin Hicks’ ominous vocals: “I’ll stay away with all the work to be done/I’ll be bleeding while you bake in the sun.

Raise The Roof” features Chin sans accompaniment as the intensity of her words captures the stark and harrowing reality of the pervasive racism we cannot seem to escape: “It must be in the fucking water being force-fed to the police, the prosecutor and the politicians who care nothing for Black bodies falling like leaves in late August…in Ferguson…in Cleveland…in Staten Island, only minutes away from where my own child sits, watching The Muppets take over Manhattan.

No More Water marks a significant moment of self-discovery for Ndegeocello. She adds that Baldwin entered her life at precisely the right time. “It came when I was ready to look in the mirror. I’ve had to play Plantation Lullabies at a few shows. Looking back, I had an interesting perspective, but the dialogue was limited. It was more like a cathartic experience for a young person of color, whereas now I’m going, ‘How can I get us all to love each other? How can I get us all to see this for what it is?’”

Beastie Boys Celebrate 30 Years Of ‘Ill Communication’ With Limited Edition 3LP Deluxe Vinyl & Cassette Out July 26

0

Originally released 30 years ago today on May 31, 1994, Ill Communication was much more than the record that returned Beastie Boys to #1 on the Billboard 200. In short order, the fourth album from Michael “Mike D” Diamond, Adam “Adrock” Horovitz and Adam “MCA” Yauch would become a multi-platinum juggernaut that pervaded every aspect of pop culture. Ill Communication‘s charge to global domination was led by “Sabotage” and its unforgettable Spike Jonze/Nathanial Hornblower-directed tribute to ’70s cop shows, as Rolling Stone dubbed the album 1994’s “soundtrack for summer.” Fans and critics alike were equally and instantly floored by hip hop highlights like the opening “Sure Shot,” the classic Jimmy Smith homage “Root Down” and the Q-Tip collaboration “Get It Together,” while a Vibe cover story hailed Beastie Boys as “perhaps the most consistently innovative musicians to emerge out of hip hop.” It was a claim that Ill Communication continues to back up, as the album’s infectious sprawl enthralls multiple generations of listeners. From household name hits to sublime instrumentals (“Sabrosa,” “Ricky’s Theme”) to hardcore punk workouts (“Tough Guy,” “Heart Attack Man”) and realms beyond (“Bodhisattva Vow,” “Shambala”), Ill Communication has never stopped growing in stature and impact.

Grand Royal, Capitol Records and UMe are proud to commemorate the 30th anniversary of Ill Communication with the July 26 release of two limited edition versions of this Beastie Boys opus:

* A 3LP Deluxe Edition that resurrects a rare version of the album originally released as a limited run in 2009. Long out-of-print and sought after by fans and collectors, the Ill Communication 30th anniversary vinyl edition features lenticular cover art and includes a third LP with 12 bonus tracks (featuring rarities including a live version of “The Maestro” from 1992’s Check Your Head, “Mullet Head,” and ten more remixes, B-sides and assorted oddities), all housed in a rigid slipcase and pressed on 180g vinyl.

* A limited edition cassette of the original album, marking the first time in decades Ill Communication will be available in the format.

So fire up the turntable and dust off that Walkman, and join in the celebration of 30 years of Ill Communication with Beastie Boys and the album’s supporting cast of Mario Caldato Jr. (who co-produced the record with the band), Money Mark, Eric Bobo, Amery “AWOL” Smith, Eugene Gore, Q-Tip and Biz Markie. Because you can’t, you won’t and you don’t stop…

Max Richter Announces New Album ‘In A Landscape’ And First Ever World Tour

0

Max Richter today announces his highly anticipated new album ‘In A Landscape’ and his first ever world tour.

‘In A Landscape’, Richter’s ninth studio album, is released on Friday 6th September. You can pre-order the album and listen to the first single, ‘Movement, Before All Flowers’, HERE.

The new album marks a significant evolution in Richter’s musical journey, as he delves deeper into the themes of optimism and human emotion accompanied by an innovative exploration of electronic sounds and field recordings. It is a record about reconciling polarities, bringing together the electronic and the acoustic, the human and the natural world, the big questions of life and the quiet pleasures of living – a fleeting self-portrait of a musician in constant motion.

‘In A Landscape’ employs homogenous musical language to Richter’s seminal album ‘The Blue Notebooks’, with the two albums in a way bookending this significant chapter of Richter’s life and career. It is presented as an open conversation with the audience, asking them to consider the dualities in their own life, what personal stories come to mind while listening and, ultimately, serving as an invitation to imagination.

Max Richter says “For me, the music on the record is about connecting or reconciling polarities. The electronics with the acoustic instruments, the natural world with the human world, and the big ideas of life with the personal and intimate. This is a dynamic I started to explore in my 2004 record The Blue Notebooks, and the new project shares many of that album’s concerns; in a way this record is another look at the themes of the earlier work, but from the perspective of our world and our lives in 2024.”

In support of ‘In A Landscape’, Richter has also announced details of his first ever world tour, marking a coming of age for the globally celebrated musician.

The newly announced tour dates will see Richter play across the United Kingdom, Europe, North America, Canada, Australia and Asia throughout 2024 and 2025, including shows at London’s legendary Royal Festival Hall and the iconic Walt Disney Concert Hall in Los Angeles. Tickets are available via fan presale from Tuesday 4th June at 10am local, with tickets then on general sale on Thursday 6th June at 10am local. Fans can access the pre-sale by pre-ordering a copy of ‘In A Landscape’ before 3pm BST on Monday 3rd June. You can find more information HERE.

‘In A Landscape’ is Richter’s first solo album recorded at Studio Richter Mahr, the minimalist, eco-conscious creative retreat designed and operated by Richter and his wife, visual artist Yulia Mahr. Shifting focus to Richter’s immediate surroundings, ‘In A Landscape’ marks out a psychic space in which to meditate on the present while recognising a lifetime of artistic influence, from Bach and Purcell to the poetry of Keats, Wordsworth and Anne Carson. Richter also found inspiration in a number of books which he was reading at the time of writing ‘In A Landscape’, with many of the track titles on the album named after lines from literature and some of his own treasured paperbacks pictured on the album cover.

Interspersing the studio compositions are nine ‘Life Studies’ assembled from field recordings and the hubbub of the everyday: footsteps through the woods, eggs sizzling in the kitchen, a Hong Kong airport trolley, practicing Mozart on the piano. These simple acts of noticing from a zen-minded creative bring the “landscape” of the album’s title into focus, calling back to the found sounds that distinguished Richter’s breakthrough albums, 2002’s ‘Memoryhouse’ and 2004’s ‘The Blue Notebooks’.

One the most influential and acclaimed composers of his generation, Richter is known for his ability to seamlessly blend traditional orchestrations with modern electronic elements. With a career spanning decades, Richter’s impact on the music industry cannot be overstated. His unparalleled ability to translate profound human experiences into musical compositions has earned him a dedicated global following, with his catalogue amassing over three billion streams to date. Notably, his record-breaking album ‘SLEEP’ stands as one of the most streamed classical albums of all time.

His seminal album ‘The Blue Notebooks’ continues to reach new audiences even as it celebrates its twentieth anniversary in 2024. ‘On The Nature of Daylight’, the album’s epic centerpiece, recently featured on HBO’s acclaimed post-apocalyptic drama The Last Of Us, as well as appearing on numerous film and TV soundtracks over the years. Richter performed the album in full at Glastonbury Festival last year alongside Tilda Swinton, who joined Richter onstage to recite the spoken word pieces she contributed for the original recording.

Beyond his solo endeavors, Richter’s is a prolific collaborator who has worked with esteemed creatives and visionaries across multiple disciplines. From scoring Dior shows for Kim Jones to composing for ballets choreographed by Wayne McGregor or his contributions to the world of cinema and TV with directors Denis Villeneuve, Martin Scorsese, and Ari Folman, Richter’s versatility knows no bounds.

Richter’s collaborative partnership with Wayne McGregor goes from strength to strength, with the acclaimed composer contributing an original score for McGregor’s next production Maddaddam at London’s Royal Opera House in November; a visionary new ballet based on Margaret Atwood’s dystopian epic of annihilation and survival. In addition, the pair’s previous collaboration, Woolf Works, receives its New York premiere at the Metropolitan Opera House this June.

Richter is co-founder of Studio Richter Mahr alongside his partner, visual artist Yulia Mahr. Set in the English countryside in Oxfordshire, Max and Yulia built the multimedia production studio inside a former farmhouse and have powered it with cutting-edge solar and heat-pump technology. Located within 31 acres of woodland, the duo have a huge passion for using the land to farm and provide a sustainable working environment, serving as a space where both emerging and established creatives can come to develop their work.

The Police Announce 40th Anniversary Of Synchronicity With 4LP Super Deluxe Edition, 2LP Color Vinyl, and 1LP Picture Disc Versions

0

July 26th 2024 sees the global reissue of The Police Synchronicity, released in multiple formats, including a 6-disc Limited Edition Deluxe Boxset containing 55 previously unreleased tracks, new liner notes and interviews, rare archive memorabilia and unseen photographs. It’s a treasure trove for Police fans.

Synchronicity hit No.1 around the world, selling over 15 million globally (8.5 million sales of which were from the US alone). The No.1 hit single “Every Breath You Take” would go on to be the most played song in radio history, with more than 15 million plays.

The critical reception for Synchronicity was no less impressive: the album received five Grammy Award nominations in 1984 and won three (Best Rock Performance by a Duo or Group with Vocal, Song of the Year (“Every Breath You Take”) and Best Pop Performance by a Duo or Group with Vocal). The album also received press acclaim and has since appeared in many lists, including #159 in Rolling Stone Magazine’s Greatest 500 Albums of All Time.

This reissue has been three years in the making, created with the band’s involvement and endorsement. The accompanying 62-page boxset booklet contains extensive new liner notes written by acclaimed music journalist Jason Draper, who details the conception and infamous birth of arguably The Police’s masterpiece.

Over forty years on, all three members of the band continue to mark the legacy of The Police: Stewart Copeland published his Police Diaries and toured the world with his Police Deranged concerts. In October and November Stewart will perform across the UK with his new spoken-word show Have I said Too Much?; Andy Summers has published several photography books focusing on the Police era. He is currently touring his Cracked Lens + A Missing String show across the US; and Sting continues to tour extensively: his current US and European Tour runs throughout 2024 and features many Police songs among his solo work.

My Next Read: “How to Become Famous: Lost Einsteins, Forgotten Superstars, and How the Beatles Came to Be” by Cass R. Sunstein

0

Fame is like lightning. Taylor Swift, Bob Dylan, Leonardo da Vinci, Jane Austen, Oprah Winfrey—all of them were struck. Why? What if they hadn’t been?

Consider the most famous music group in history. What would the world be like if the Beatles never existed? This was the question posed by the playful, thought-provoking, 2019 film Yesterday, in which a young, completely unknown singer starts performing Beatles hits to a world that has never heard them. Would the Fab Four’s songs be as phenomenally popular as they are in our own Beatle-infused world? The movie asserts that they would, but is that true? Was the success of the Beatles inevitable due to their amazing, matchless talent?

Maybe. It’s hard to imagine our world without its stars, icons, and celebrities. They are part of our culture and history, seeming permanent and preordained. But as Harvard law professor (and passionate Beatles fan) Cass Sunstein shows in this startling book, that is far from the case. Focusing on both famous and forgotten (or simply overlooked) artists and luminaries in music, literature, business, science, politics, and other fields, he explores why some individuals become famous and others don’t and offers a new understanding of the roles played by greatness, luck, and contingency in the achievement of fame.

Sunstein examines recent research on informational cascades, network effects, and group polarization to probe the question of how people become famous. He explores what ends up in the history books and in the literary canon and how that changes radically over time. He delves into the rich and entertaining stories of a diverse cast of famous characters, from John Keats, William Blake, and Jane Austen to Bob Dylan, Ayn Rand, and Stan Lee—as well as John, Paul, George, and Ringo.

How to Become Famous takes you on a fun, captivating, and at times profound journey that will forever change your perspective on the latest celebrity’s “fifteen minutes of fame” and on what vaults some to the top—and leaves others in the dust.

The National Music Centre (NMC) is pleased to announce the opening of its updated Speak Up! exhibition on June 19 with a new round of Indigenous trailblazers. A few days later, on June 21, NMC will celebrate National Indigenous Peoples Day with free admission to Studio Bell, featuring a special live event with Indigenous song, music, and dance.

The evolving Speak Up! exhibition, which is supported by TD Bank Group, will now feature Willie Thrasher, the celebrated Inuvialuit musician who has advocated for Inuit and First Nations issues throughout his career; Juno award-winning singer-songwriter Leela Gilday from the Dene Nation; traditional pow wow singer Edmund Bull of the world champion Cree group, Red Bull Singers; and Juno Award-winning traditional trio The Bearhead Sisters from the Paul First Nation in Alberta.

On June 21 at 1:00 pm, the live event will be hosted by David McLeod, curator of the National Music Centre’s Speak Up! exhibition, and feature performances by Willie Thrasher and his partner Linda Saddleback; Cree Métis songwriter, poet, and filmmaker Sandra Sutter; and Wyatt C. Louis, a nêhiyaw singer-songwriter who melds folk and soulful blues to tell tales of love, loss and the journey home.

“I’ve been going from reserve to reserve, city after city, performing for all these years and it’s fun to hear that I’ve been included in this new exhibition,” said Willie Thrasher. “Me and Linda are honoured to come out to Calgary and perform; we’re excited to meet our native brothers and sisters, light a spirit fire for our ancestors, and share what our elders and people have shown us for so many years. We’re really honoured by all of it.”

Since 2019, the Speak Up! exhibition has showcased an annual selection of Indigenous groundbreakers from across Canada who have left their mark on culture through music. Featuring storytelling, audio, and artifacts, visitors to Speak Up! can learn how Indigenous artists are using their voices to foster dialogue and understanding to radically shift the Canadian paradigm of who First Nation, Métis, and Inuit people are.

“This year’s featured Speak Up! artists have not only made significant contributions to music but have also played crucial roles in promoting Indigenous culture and heritage. They include some of the biggest names on North America’s powwow trail and contemporary songwriters who beautifully capture stories of their life, their people, and a deep connection to the land they call home,” said David McLeod (member of the Pine Creek First Nation), Curator of Speak Up! and NMC Board Member and Chair of NMC’s National Indigenous Programming Advisory Committee.

The Speak Up! exhibition is supported by TD who, in 2022, increased its support of NMC’s Indigenous programming through the OHSOTO’KINO initiative, so named after a Blackfoot phrase that means “to recognize a voice of.” OHSOTO’KINO is led by NMC’s Indigenous Programming Advisory Committee, who act as a guiding voice for exhibitions and programs at Studio Bell. The initiative focuses on multiple elements: creation of new music in NMC’s recording studios, artist development through a music incubator program, exhibitions via the annually updated Speak Up! gallery, and digital content on NMC’s Amplify platform at amplify.nmc.ca.

Studio Bell, home of the National Music Centre, will be open from 10:00 am to 5:00 pm on June 21, National Indigenous Peoples Day, and admission will be free for everyone. Live Nation’s All-In Pricing Policy Delivers Increased Ticketing Transparency For Fans And More Sales For Artists In Its First Six Months

Live Nation Entertainment’s all-in pricing policy, which shows a ticket buyer the total price and fees associated with their transaction, has yielded an 8% increase in completed sales in the first six months the program rolled out across all Live Nation venues and festivals in the U.S. The industry-leading initiative has proven beneficial for both fans and artists, delivering greater transparency for fans while increasing sales for artists and fewer abandoned carts at checkout.

The encouraging data comes at a critical time as policymakers in the House prepare to vote on the TICKET Act, which aims to ensure transparent pricing for consumers among other ticket reforms. Live Nation’s move to all-in pricing has seen broad success, with nearly 9,000 shows displaying all-in pricing as the program begins to scale. This benefits fans in the 33 states plus Washington, D.C., where Live Nation operates venues.

“Showing the total cost to walk in the door upfront is better for fans and artists. We’re proud to have led the industry in adapting this commonsense policy, and we encourage Congress to enact a nationwide law so every ticket buyer benefits from this transparency, no matter where they are buying their tickets,” said Michael Rapino, CEO of Live Nation Entertainment.

In addition to advocating for a nationwide all-in pricing mandate, Live Nation has actively supported the passage of all-in pricing laws in state legislatures across the country including California, Colorado, Connecticut, Maryland, Minnesota, New York and Tennessee. However, many resale platforms are still not compliant with these state-led transparency standards. The company advises consumers to be on the lookout for illegal drip pricing on other ticketing platforms and to report such cases to their state Attorney General’s office. Live Nation also supports other ticketing reforms that benefit consumers including banning speculative ticketing, allowing artists to cap resale markups, enhancing legislation against buying tickets with bots, and more.
