Bad Romance: Insider-Turned-Novelist HUNTER SNOW Puts Music-Biz Types In The “Crush” Groove

0

If you had to assign the music business to a literary category, you’d have lots of options: horror, true crime, maybe science fiction. But none of those possibilities has the storytelling potential of a good romance. Enter Rock Crush and Roll, an amorous potboiler from author Hunter Snow that shows what happens behind the scenes can be even spicier than what goes on in the lyrics.

The plot in a nutshell: A female artist manager named Tyler Robertson works at a company that represents the biggest rock star in the world, Cary Kingston. But when their relationship becomes more than professional, she has a lot of soul-searching to do. For one thing, she’s violating her hard-earned policy against dating musicians. (Ever been in or around a band? Good call!) And his lifestyle is hardly conducive to having a serious relationship. Now she must navigate a precarious courtship while trying to figure out if her attraction is really to him, or merely to what he represents.

“This book, at its core, is about navigating relationships,” says author Snow. “Friends, families, partners, colleagues, and what truly makes you happy at the end of the day.”

The musical milieu of the story was a natural for Snow, a resident of the Pacific Northwest who once held an unspecified job in the business.

“I had to be careful not to base the characters on specific people in the music industry,” she says, “but you might recognize some of them—or think you do.”

And if that weren’t a guessing game enough, she’s sprinkled her narrative with more than 300 bits of music trivia and related references. Can you spot them all before Tyler and Cary find genuine domestic bliss … or rip each other’s hearts to shreds like off-brand Kleenex?

Not just a steamy page-turner, the novel has its light-hearted elements as well. “My copy editor spit out his coffee while reading one part of the book because he was laughing so hard,” Snow says. “That made my day.” Yet there’s a serious agenda at work here too.

“As a single woman, I wanted to write about positive relationships with men. Yes, some men are terrible to women and some women are terrible to men. But it was important to me that the main character in this book had a good relationship with her dad.”

Written in six weeks and edited over the course of a year, the novel is now available as a 332-page paperback or Kindle download from Tellwell Talent. And it isn’t the last word on the subject from Snow—at least not exactly:

“I don’t have any plans to write a sequel,” she says. “However, my next book is also a rock ‘n roll romance with an entirely different trope.”
One horror/true crime/sci-fi relationship story, comin’ right up!

RUTH MOODY of The Wailin’ Jennys Makes Triumphant Return With “Seventeen” From Upcoming Album ‘Wanderer’ Out May 17

0

No matter how far you think you’ve come, it’s hard to resist thinking about what might have been. That’s the rationale behind “Seventeen,” the achingly wistful single from Canadian singer-songwriter Ruth Moody’s forthcoming album, Wanderer, out May 17 on Blue Muse Records/True North Records.

In her gentle yet authoritative soprano, Moody looks back on a teenage crush that followed the sad but typical trajectory from something craved to something squandered:

If I could go back
I’d show you all the ways that you made me feel
If I could go back
I’d take you in my arms, try and set us free
If I could go back
I wouldn’t be here now trying to say “I’m sorry”
I was seventeen

The open-tuned guitars, delicate delivery and overall “sadder but wiser” vibe of the track reveal Moody’s debt to one of her musical heroes, Joni Mitchell, indeed. At the same time, the infectious melody and eternally relevant depiction of adolescent yearning give “Seventeen” a commercial potential that puts it right up there with the Taylors and Avrils of today.

The song is an uncharacteristically long look back for Wanderer, which mostly concerns itself with the path Moody’s life has taken since the release of her last album, 2013’s These Wilder Things. Basically, she went on an extended hiatus to start a family—hey, John Lennon did it too—and being a mother to a now-7-year-old has lent maturity and focus to the 10 new cuts she and co-producer Dan Knobler laid down at Sound Emporium in Nashville – she currently splits her time between Music City USA and Victoria, BC.

Accruing wisdom has been a lifelong process for Moody, starting with her formative years on a goat farm in Manitoba and the dual education in music and English she received from her teacher parents. She went from singing with her siblings to picking up a guitar, and by her 20s was firmly on the road to success with the Billboard-charting and JUNO-Award-winning folk trio The Wailin’ Jennys, which she co-founded in 2002 (and remains with to this day). Her parallel solo career began in 2010, and she’s also made time for a number of high-profile collaborations with the legendary Mark Knopfler. As a guest in his band, and The Wailin’ Jennys, and as a solo act, she’s appeared on some of the most prestigious stages around the world.

Moody will celebrate the release of Wanderer with a tour of top listening rooms in the U.S. Dates booked so far are as follows:
May 21: Ram’s Head, Annapolis, MD
May 22: World Café Live, Philadelphia, PA
May 23: The Birchmere, Alexandria, VA
May 25: Joe’s Pub, New York City
May 26: State Theatre, State College, PA
May 28: SPACE, Evanston, IL
May 29: Vivarium, Milwaukee, WI
May 30: Ludlow Garage, Cincinnati, OH
July 13 + 14: Winnipeg Folk Festival, Winnipeg, MB

Moody’s welcome back to the concert stage begins less than a week after Wanderer drops. What a way to say “You barely look a day past ‘Seventeen.’”

Canadian Best-Selling Author Jennifer Buchanan Leads Online Seminars Trumpeting The Healing Power Of Music

0

Players and listeners alike love to say that music is their therapy, but not all of them realize the idea has a firm grounding in scientific reality. With March marking Music Therapy Awareness Month all across Canada, there’s no better time to put two events on your April calendar that are poised to reveal just how much music and a well-curated playlist can keep the human mind, body and soul on an even keel.

Presented by renowned expert and advocate Jennifer Buchanan along with some of her team from JB Music Therapy, the online events will approach the topic from two different perspectives.

The general public is the audience for “What is Music Therapy,” a free webinar being hosted on Wednesday, April 17. The event will provide an introduction to the use of music therapy in everything from the medical field to online music therapy to employee assistance programs. (Read more and register at https://info.jbmusictherapy.com/publicseminar/

One day earlier, on Tuesday, April 16, working professionals like psychologists, counsellors and other mental health professionals including music therapists can attend a paid workshop that delves deep into the use of music, and in particular the power of a playlist as an effective treatment in clinical settings. And they can even earn continuing education credits while they do it. (Space is limited; sign up at https://info.jbmusictherapy.com/coursesforclinicians/)

“There is so much scientific, clinical and personal evidence that proves music improves health and well-being,” Buchanan says. “Music can be a sure friend, and I believe there is no better way to give our mental health the care it needs than through the right music, at the right time and in the right way.”

If anyone can make such a statement with authority, it’s Buchanan, a true trailblazer in her field who has been championing the benefits of music therapy for over three decades. As a music therapist herself, she has been instrumental in introducing music therapy to hundreds of individuals and organizations across Canada. And as a keynote speaker and author of best-sellers like 2021’s Wellness, Wellplayed: The Power of a Playlist, she’s introduced countless new converts to the vital function music performs in helping people recover from physical and emotional trauma—not to mention its proactive use in fostering everyday well-being. Those are all especially important considerations in these challenging times, when the scourges of social alienation, work-related stress and homelife pressures have just about everyone feeling overwhelmed and searching for a little harmony.

Buchanan holds both an MTA (designating her as a Certified Music Therapist) and an MBA in social entrepreneurship. A former President and Executive Director of the Canadian Association of Music Therapists, she’s now a Director at the National Music Centre (NMC), where she holds regular public presentations on the ability of music to stimulate the brain and improve mood, memory and motivation.

Her company, JB Music Therapy is home to a diverse team of Certified Music Therapists who treat clients of all ages in medical, educational and community-care environments. The company has been nominated three times for the Community Impact Award by the Calgary Chamber of Commerce, and frequently partners with corporations, healthcare institutions and law-enforcement agencies. Buchanan and her work have been profiled in publications like The Guardian, The Huffington Post and The Globe and Mail, giving her a wider platform to explain music’s critical relationship to heart health, neuro-rehabilitation and overall well-being.

“Just like our physical health, our mental health requires attention—perhaps now more than ever,” Buchanan says. “When you are in transition or feeling lost, music can be the lifeline you need to get you through to the next step. Even during the most challenging of times, it can reassure us that everything is going to be okay.”

From Discord to Dialogue: Resolving Communication Issues in Your Relationships

0

By Mitch Rice

Communication is the melody that guides partners through the highs and lows of their intricate dance. The tool guides partners through the journey. Trust, intimacy, and understanding are built on the foundation. When this melody fails to work, discord often breaks the harmony and leaves couples feeling disconnected and frustrated. Miscommunication or lack of communication can cause trust issues, resentment, and relationship breakdown.

This detailed guide covers relationship communication problem-solving. Communication issues in relationships affect the health and longevity of partnerships, and we recognize this. If they face these challenges head-on, couples can create meaningful dialogue, genuine understanding, and lasting connections. Face these challenges head-on. We will study practical strategies, evidence-based techniques, and real-life anecdotes to help couples improve their communication and bond. We aim to give couples actionable insights.

Effective communication opens the door to happier, healthier relationships. Communicating well is key. This includes conflict resolution and emotional intimacy. Change from conflict to dialogue empowers and transforms. Remember this whether you’re fixing long-standing issues or improving your relationship. Join us as we work toward a better future for your relationships.

Understanding the Complexity of Communication Issues in Your Relationships

Open and honest communication lets partners express their needs, wants, and emotions, fostering successful relationships. However, many factors can hinder communication, causing misunderstandings, disagreements, and emotional distance. Common communication issues include:

Recurring arguments: Couples often get stuck arguing about the same issues without a solution. This repetition may be due to unresolved issues or communication styles that make it hard for partners to agree.

Frustration and isolation: Frustration and isolation can result from partners having trouble communicating. Other partners may feel confused or unheard. This can happen when people struggle to express themselves or when their partner doesn’t listen and validate their feelings.

Level of difficulty Manage Your Emotions: Anger, resentment, and fear can cloud judgment and intensify conflicts. When emotions are high, rational communication is put on hold, making constructive conversations between couples difficult.

Insufficient Time for Meaningful Conversation: Busy schedules and other commitments can hinder communication and weaken relationships. Today’s busy world may cause couples to put work, housework, and social obligations before quality time together and neglect communication. Relationship issues can result.

Trust issues: Past betrayals or trust breaches can strain communication and intimacy. Trust issues from infidelity, lying, or broken promises can last a long time. Couples find it hard to be vulnerable and open.

All of us at All in the Family Counselling understand the importance of addressing communication issues with sensitivity and compassion. Our experienced therapists help couples navigate these issues and improve communication. We help couples improve communication and intimacy through individualized counseling. We help couples resolve conflict through empathy, active listening, and respect. Partnerships become stronger and more fulfilling.

Identifying the Root Causes of Communication Issues

Fixing communication issues requires finding their causes. Several factors may cause these:

Childhood or past traumas: Unresolved childhood traumas can affect adult communication and relationships. Abandoned or neglected people may have trouble trusting others, making it hard for them to be vulnerable with their partner.

Styles of attachments: Attachment theory says our early caregiver attachments shape our adult relationships and how we express and interpret our feelings. Secure attachment styles facilitate intimacy and need expression. Insecure attachment styles may struggle with dependency or rejection, affecting partner communication.

Cultural Differences: Cultural values influence relationship communication and expectations. Culturally diverse couples may express emotions, resolve conflicts, and show affection differently. These differences may cause misunderstandings or conflicts if not discussed openly and respectfully.

Personality Differences: Everyone’s personality and communication style can clash with their partner’s. Introverted people may prefer to think before speaking, while extroverted partners may enjoy frequent interaction. Conflict can result from not respecting these communication preferences.

Communication problems and their causes can help couples understand and solve their issues. All in the Family Counselling’s expert therapists help couples explore these underlying factors and develop effective communication strategies for their needs and circumstances. We help couples overcome communication barriers and grow closer through compassionate, evidence-based guidance and interventions.

Our Approach at All in the Family Counselling

All in the Family Counselling recommends a holistic approach to relationship communication issues. Couples learn how to communicate and build healthier relationships in our comprehensive counseling program. Overview of our main services:
Psychotherapy for Individuals and Couples Our experienced therapists treat individuals and couples. Partner communication, concerns, and relationship issues can be discussed in private during these sessions. Sessions together or separately can improve communication and understanding between couples.

Train Communication Skills: As is known, effective communication can be learned and improved. We teach active listening, assertiveness, and conflict resolution to improve communication. We teach couples these basic communication skills to improve their openness, honesty, and respect.

Emotional regulation: It is essential because anger, frustration, and anxiety can hinder communication and deepen conflicts. This is why we emphasize emotional regulation to help people recognize and manage their emotions. Couples can identify triggers, self-soothe, and express feelings constructively to reduce reactivity and improve communication.

Exercises for relationships: A lasting relationship requires hard work and practice. Our therapists bond couples through role-playing and experiential exercises. Partners can practise active listening, empathy, and validation in these safe and supportive activities.

Some Mindfulness Methods: In today’s hectic world, it’s easy to miss the moment. Mindfulness improves communication presence and awareness. Deep breathing, body scans, and mindful listening can help couples stay calm during difficult conversations. This may improve partner communication.

Every All in the Family Counselling employee helps couples improve communication and relationships. Our skilled therapists offer compassionate guidance, useful tools, and unwavering support. We recommend scheduling a consultation with us immediately to turn disagreements into conversations and deepen your relationship. Success Stories: Transforming Discord into Dialogue

Professional counseling from All in the Family Counselling has healed and transformed many couples. They overcame communication barriers and deepened their trust, understanding, and intimacy through self-discovery and mutual growth.

Sarah and David were stuck in a cycle of arguments and misunderstandings. Communication was difficult, and they blamed and defended each other in conflict. Sarah and David discovered their communication and emotional triggers in individual and couples therapy. Our therapists taught them active listening, empathy, and assertiveness, which helped them communicate more effectively. This broke their communication rut and deepened their respectful relationship.

We helped Michael and Lisa after years of drifting due to unresolved issues and emotional distance. Inability to express feelings and needs caused disconnection and dissatisfaction. Our counseling program helped Michael and Lisa prioritize emotional connection and schedule meaningful conversations. Relationship-building and mindfulness activities helped them rekindle their love and intimacy.

Country Music Hall Of Fame And Museum To Explore Nashville’s Pioneering And Influential R&B History

2

The Country Music Hall of Fame and Museum will explore the significance of Nashville’s pioneering R&B scene and its important role in the city becoming a world-renowned music center with its latest exhibition. Night Train to Nashville: Music City Rhythm & Blues Revisited is a 20th anniversary edition of the museum’s award-winning original exhibit, which was featured in its galleries March 2004 through December 2005. The exhibit will include many of the same items and themes, as well as recently discovered artifacts and photographs. The exhibit, which is included with museum admission, opens Friday, April 26, and runs through September 2025.

Night Train to Nashville: Music City Rhythm & Blues Revisited explores Nashville’s R&B activity in the decades following World War II, spanning 1945-1970. As Nashville’s country music industry was just getting started, the city was also a hotbed for R&B, with celebrated performers contributing to the community’s rich musical heritage, including Country Music Hall of Fame member Ray CharlesHank CrawfordBobby HebbJimi HendrixEtta James and Little Richard, among many others. During this time, R&B reigned alongside country music in the city’s clubs and studios, on radio and on nationally syndicated television.

The exhibit is supported by a free-to-access Night Train to Nashville online exhibit, which launched last year and was made possible by a major grant awarded from the National Endowment for the Humanities (NEH). The exhibit is also supplemented by a newly published companion book and an opening weekend program examining the influential television show “Night Train.”

“This exhibit and its related resources offer opportunities to revisit Nashville’s often overlooked R&B legacy and its important role in our community becoming ‘Music City,'” said Kyle Young, CEO of the Country Music Hall of Fame and Museum. “As Nashville developed into a major recording center, it did so against a background of urban change and at a time when racial barriers were tested and sometimes broken on bandstands, inside recording studios and on the airwaves.”

The exhibit will explore:

  • The ways that iconic musicians including Little Richard and Jimi Hendrix honed their skills on Nashville bandstands.
  • How Nashville led the way in broadcasting groundbreaking and influential R&B on the 50,000-watt powerhouse WLAC radio station and through syndicated TV shows such as “Night Train and “The!!!!Beat.”
  • The musical collaborations of R&B and country musicians.
  • The recording of Etta James’s scorching live album Etta James Rocks the House at Nashville’s New Era Club.
  • Key developments of the late 1960s, from the soaring height of Robert Knight’s R&B-pop crossover hit “Everlasting Love” (recorded in Nashville), to the depths of so-called “urban renewal” and the routing of Interstate 40 through Jefferson Street, which eventually devastated the city’s vibrant R&B nightlife.

Some artifacts to be displayed include:

  • Gibson ES-345 electric guitar and Lab Series L7 amplifier used by Johnny Jones in the later part of his career. Nashville’s premier blues guitarist, Jones performed in the house band on “Night Train” and “The!!!!Beat” and influenced Jimi Hendrix in the early 1960s.
  • Letter sent by blues singer Bessie Smith to Hatch Show Print in 1927, accompanied by a photograph to use for designing her posters.
  • Etta James-signed cover of Etta James Rocks the House, recorded in September 1963 at Nashville’s New Era Club.
  • Three-piece suit worn onstage by vocalist and bandleader Jimmy Church. A Nashville native who recorded with an R&B group while still in high school, Church was regularly featured on television shows “Night Train” and “The!!!!Beat.”
  • Spoons used by Bobby Hebb as percussion instruments and Hebb’s Gibson JS-200 guitar. Hebb, a Nashville native, wrote and recorded the million-selling crossover hit “Sunny,” and performed on the Grand Ole Opry in the early 1950s as a member of Country Music Hall of Fame member Roy Acuff’s band.
  • Hand-painted bandstand used by star saxophonist and bandleader Hank Crawford in the 1960s.
  • Several original Hatch Show Print posters from the 1950s and 1960s advertising appearances by Gene AllisonEarl Gaines, Little Willie John, Jackie ShaneJoe Tex and others.
  • A scrapbook of vintage photographs belonging to Nashville entertainer Frank Howard.

In support of the exhibit, the museum is publishing a companion book, “Night Train to Nashville: Music City Rhythm & Blues Revisited. The book includes a foreword by Nashville entertainer Frank Howard and explores the themes and stories in the exhibit. It also features more than 100 photographs and descriptions of classic R&B records cut in Nashville.

The book is now available to preorder on the museum’s website and will be available April 26 to purchase in the museum’s store or on its website. The book will also be available in bookstores nationwide through a distribution partnership with the University of Illinois Press.

The free-to-access online exhibit, Night Train to Nashville: Music City Rhythm & Blues, 1945-1970, revisits, updates and preserves the museum’s original physical exhibit of the same name, which was featured in the museum’s galleries 20 years ago.

The multimedia exhibit showcases a vast array of historic photos, performance videos and audio recordings, as well as instruments, show posters, stage wear and other rare items featured in the original exhibit. Online visitors can also access a full video archive of public programs hosted by the museum in relation to the original Night Train to Nashville exhibit and Nashville’s R&B history, including concerts, panel discussions and more.

To mark the opening of the exhibit, the museum will host a panel discussion on Saturday, April 27, about Nashville’s groundbreaking television series “Night Train.” Participants will include performers Jimmy Church and Frank Howard, who appeared regularly on the show, along with Katie Blackwell (wife of late “Night Train” creator and host, Noble Blackwell) and Tracye Blackwell (daughter of Katie and Noble Blackwell). The discussion will be illustrated with video clips from “Night Train.” The program will happen at 2:30 p.m. in the museum’s Ford Theater.

Night Train to Nashville: Music City Rhythm & Blues Revisited will also be supported by additional public programs during the exhibit’s run, presented in collaboration with other nonprofit partners.

The original Night Train to Nashville exhibit earned the museum a Bridging the Gap Award (2006) from the Nashville chapter of the NAACP for the promotion of interracial understanding. The exhibit’s companion album of the same name received a Grammy award for Best Historical Album (2004). Throughout the exhibit’s run, the museum produced a pair of retrospective compilation albums, published three books, and hosted dozens of panel discussions and concerts in support of the exhibit.

The Country Music Hall of Fame and Museum collects, preserves and interprets country music and its history for the education and entertainment of diverse audiences. In exhibitions, publications, digital media and educational programs, the museum explores the cultural importance and enduring beauty of the art form. The museum is operated by the Country Music Foundation, a not-for-profit 501(c)(3) educational organization chartered by the state of Tennessee in 1964. The museum is accredited by the American Alliance of Museums, and is among the most-visited history museums in the U.S. The Country Music Foundation operates Historic RCA Studio B, Hatch Show Print poster shop, CMF Records, the Frist Library and Archive and CMF Press. Museum programs are supported in part by Metropolitan Nashville Arts Commission and Tennessee Arts Commission. More information about the Country Music Hall of Fame and Museum is available at www.countrymusichalloffame.org or by calling (615) 416-2001.

My Next Read: “Zip It Up! The Best of Trouser Press Magazine 1974-1984”

0

Trouser Press magazine began as a mimeographed fanzine in March 1974 and grew to a 60,000-circulation glossy rock music monthly. Started by two high school Who-freak friends and a Jeff Beck fanatic they’d recently met, Trouser Press published 96 issues over the following decade, covering everything from British Invasion bands, ’70s arena rock and prog to punk, new wave, synth-pop, post-punk and reggae.

Zip It Up! The Best of Trouser Press Magazine 1974-1984 is an annotated anthology of the music writing that appeared in the magazine.

Annotated with recollections and reflections on the changing times, the ridiculous business of independent magazine publishing and the colorful, complicated artists — illustrated with cartoons, covers, documents and ads from the Trouser Press archive — Zip It Up! is vintage rock journalism of a form that is no longer widely practiced: features heavy on historical detail and lengthy, probing interviews, all written with wit, intelligence and a willful expression of opinions and values. It is also an extensive document of rock’s evolution from the 1970s to the mid-’80s, often capturing now-iconic bands in the early stages of their existence. By turns reverent, snarky, adulatory and cynical, Zip It Up! is a rich grazing ground for fans and students of music and music journalism.

The book is divided into sections covering the Sixties, Classic Rock, Glam Rock, Art and Prog Rock, the Roots of Punk, US / UK Punk and New Wave, Reggae, Post-Punk and more.

Features on and interviews with Jimmy Page, the Clash, the Go-Go’s, Pete Townshend, Robert Fripp, Eddy Grant, the Sex Pistols, Frank Zappa, Cheap Trick, Kate Bush, Peter Tosh, the Ramones, Blondie, Todd Rundgren, Kiss, the New York Dolls, Laurie Anderson, the Kinks, Ritchie Blackmore, Lou Reed, Bryan Ferry, Brian Eno, T. Rex, U2, Television, Graham Parker, the Small Faces, Syd Barrett, R.E.M., Devo, Black Flag and much more.

Megan Thee Stallion Adds New Dates To “Hot Girl Summer” Tour Due To Multiple Sell Outs & Overwhelming Demand

0

Today, three-time, Grammy award-winning superstar Megan Thee Stallion announced the addition of new dates to her highly-anticipated “Hot Girl Summer Tour” with Grammy-nominated artist GloRilla due to multiple sell outs and overwhelming demand.

Megan formally announced the tour on March 20, which marked her first-ever, headlining tour in arenas across the globe and will feature a special Chicas Divertidas VIP section. As part of the announcement, she also shared that GloRilla – who has delivered award-winning hits such as “Tomorrow 2 (feat Cardi B),” “FNF” and “Yeah Glo!,” – would join her on the domestic leg of the “Hot Girl Summer Tour.”

The tour comes after her latest song “HISS” debuted at No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 in February. “HISS” also became the first-ever, solo female rap song to debut No. 1 on the Billboard Global 200 and, as a result, Megan now owns the record for the biggest first week for a solo female rap song in history.

The achievement signified Megan’s third No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100, following her other chart-topping hits such as “Savage (Remix)” with Beyoncé and “WAP” with Cardi B. The song was Megan’s second solo release via Hot Girl Productions – her independent music and entertainment entity.

It’s the latest in a series of trailblazing milestones for Megan in 2024. Most recently, Planned Parenthood announced plans to honor Megan with the organization’s Catalyst for Change Award at its annual gala in New York City on April 16.
