Precision Beats: Exploring the Drum Plugin Toolkit of Mastering Experts

0

By Mitch Rice

In the realm of music production, the impact of drum sounds on a track’s texture and rhythm is undeniable. These sounds serve as the backbone of music across genres, providing the foundational beats and vibes that engage listeners. Mastering engineers, the unsung heroes behind the scenes, play a pivotal role in refining these sounds to perfection. This article discusses the sophisticated world of drum plugins, as utilized by mastering engineers, to unveil how polished and dynamic drum tracks are achieved.

The Importance of Drum Sounds in Music Production

Drum sounds hold an unparalleled significance in the realm of music production, acting as the heartbeat of compositions across various genres. The power of a well-crafted drum sound lies in its ability to convey rhythm, pace, and energy, directly influencing the listener’s experience and emotional response. From the booming kick drums of hip-hop to the subtle, intricate patterns of jazz, the versatility of drum sounds contributes to the distinct identity of musical styles.

Historically, the journey from acoustic drum kits to their electronic and digital counterparts marks a revolution in sound production. Acoustic drums, with their rich, organic tones, provide a level of dynamic expression that forms the cornerstone of traditional music genres. However, the advent of electronic drums in the late 20th century introduced a new palette of synthetic tones, enabling artists to explore innovative soundscapes and rhythms. This transition was further accelerated by digital advancements, with software and plugins offering an almost limitless array of drum sounds and effects.

The production of drum sounds has evolved into an art form, where precision in recording, sampling, and synthesis plays a crucial role. Modern music producers and engineers have access to a vast library of drum sounds, from authentic samples of a vintage drum kit to entirely synthesized beats that push the boundaries of creativity. This evolution has democratized music production, allowing even home studio producers to achieve professional-quality drum sounds.

The critical importance of drum sounds in music production is also evident in the role they play in setting the foundation for a track. They dictate the tempo, add groove, and create a framework upon which melodies and harmonies can be built. The rhythm section, led by the drums, is often the first layer of a composition, guiding the arrangement and influencing the direction of the music. In essence, the choice and treatment of drum sounds are pivotal decisions that can make or break a song’s success.

Top Mastering Engineers and Their Preferred Drum Plugins

The mastering engineer’s role is critical in polishing the final sound of a track, with a specialized focus on drum sounds for many. Names like Bob Ludwig, Emily Lazar, and Greg Calbi stand out as masters of this craft. They are known for their meticulous attention to detail and the use of advanced plugins to achieve that perfect drum sound. The best plugins for drums such as Steven Slate Drums, Addictive Drums, and Superior Drummer are often cited as their tools of choice, providing a range of features that enhance drum tracks to meet the highest standards of quality.

Best Plugins for Drums: The Mastering Engineers’ Toolkit

Steven Slate Drums

This plugin is celebrated for its realistic drum sounds, offering users an extensive library of drum kits recorded in professional studios. Its intuitive interface and detailed customization options allow engineers to tweak every aspect of the drum sound, making it a favorite among professionals.

Addictive Drums

Known for its incredible realism and versatile sound-shaping capabilities, Addictive Drums is a powerful tool for creating dynamic drum tracks. The plugin offers a wide range of drum kits and a deep level of customization, from individual drum tuning to advanced processing effects.

Superior Drummer

Superior Drummer stands out for its expansive library and detailed editing features, enabling a mastering engineer to sculpt the perfect drum sound. The software’s ability to mimic room acoustics and microphone setups provides an added layer of realism to the drum tracks.

Understanding Drum VSTs and Their Role in Mastering

Virtual Studio Technology (VST) plugins have revolutionized the way we create drum sounds, offering a digital solution for achieving realistic drum tones. Top mastering engineers utilize these tools to refine and enhance the drum sound, ensuring they sit perfectly within the mix.

The Drum Track: From Recording to Mastering

The journey of a drum track from recording to mastering is a complex process that involves numerous steps. Digital Audio Workstations (DAWs) play a crucial role in editing and preparing these tracks for the final mastering phase. Techniques such as light compression and EQ adjustments are commonly employed to polish the drum sounds.

Mastering for the Kick Drum and Drum Bus

The kick drum often requires specific attention during the mastering process to ensure it stands out clearly without overwhelming other elements in the mix. The concept of a drum bus allows engineers to process multiple drum tracks together, achieving a cohesive sound through bus processing techniques.

The Use of Room Mics in Drum Production

Room mics capture the natural ambiance of drum sounds, adding depth and space to the track. Mastering engineers skillfully utilize these recordings to enhance the overall sound, providing a more immersive listening experience.

Conclusion

The role of drum plugins in music production and the mastering process cannot be overstated. These tools enable mastering engineers to enhance the overall quality of music, making drums sound precise and impactful. As we’ve explored, the combination of skillful mastering and the use of advanced plugins can elevate the drum tracks to a level that resonates with listeners worldwide, reaffirming the artistry and technical prowess behind every beat.

BNL’s Ed Robertson says, “The 35th Anniversary show at the Legendary El Mocambo was a very special night. All of our friends and family were there, and hardcore fans traveled far and wide to be in the room for it. It was a chance to look back, AND to look forward. The energy in the room was incredible. We played songs that were nearly 35 years old, and songs that were barely 35 days old. Most important of all, we had a blast doing it!”

The exclusive show will premiere on SiriusXM’s PopRocks (ch. 6) on March 22 at 5pm ET, and will air throughout the weekend on March 22 at 11pm ET, March 23 at 10am ET, and March 24 at 2am ET. There will be an encore performance of “35 Live” on SiriusXM’s Iceberg channel the weekend of April 19. It will also be available to hear on the SiriusXM app.

In addition, BNL will be releasing a deluxe edition of their highly acclaimed new album, In Flight. The upcoming BNL tour stretches across 30 shows throughout the States, including the Ryman Auditorium in Nashville. Kicking off on September 16 in Cedar Rapids, information for all shows is available here. Barenaked Bytes is available at the App Store and Google Play. It’s free to download and use here. In-app purchases available.

BNL and long-time sustainability partner REVERB (REVERB.org) will continue to build on their 20 years of environmental action on this year’s tour, working to reduce the footprint of live music and connecting with fans to take action for people and the planet. For the fall 2024 tour, BNL has partnered with REVERB and voter registration nonprofit, HeadCount, so that $1 per ticket goes to supporting environmental action and voter registration efforts.

Over the course of 35 years, the beloved quartet has sold over 15 million records worldwide and built up an arsenal of hits such as “If I Had $1,000,000,” “One Week,” “Pinch Me,” and “The Big Bang Theory Theme.” Widely acknowledged as one of the best live acts on the planet, BNL has hosted a cruise, had their own Ben & Jerry’s ice cream flavor, and participated in the first-ever “space-to-earth musical collaboration” with astronaut Chris Hadfield. To date, BNL has amassed eight JUNO Awards, garnered two GRAMMY nominations and was inducted into the Canadian Music Hall of Fame. Kansas Extends Their 50th Anniversary Tour With 23 Dates Added

0

As a result of brisk ticket sales and numerous sellouts, America’s preeminent progressive rock band KANSAS is adding a third and final leg to their 50th Anniversary Tour. The “Another Fork in The Road” Tour celebrates 50 years of the band’s illustrious music history with concerts featuring two full hours of memorable hits, fan favorites and deep cuts rarely performed live. The tour has been hallmarked by energetic and spellbinding performances at some of the foremost theaters and performing arts centers across the United States and into Canada.

“This tour has already been incredibly special for the band. The 50th Anniversary Tour started in 2023 which commemorates KANSAS’s first year as a band. It is continuing in 2024 which commemorates the release of the first KANSAS album,” comments KANSAS guitarist and original member Richard Williams. “There are so many places in the U.S. where we haven’t been able to play yet, Topeka and Wichita just to name two, we knew we would have to add a third and final leg to the tour. After such a successful and sold-out premiere of the tour in Pittsburgh, PA, we wanted to put an exclamation point on the tour by having the closing 50th Anniversary Tour concert take place back there at the Benedum Center.”

In a tribute to the band’s five decades of success, Billboard Magazine describes the basis for their longstanding appeal: “Blending blues-based hard rock and intricate progressive constructions, KANSAS staked out its own musical territory, at once original and accessible.” Billboard.com – KANSAS Hits 50

“The audiences for this 50th Anniversary Tour have been exhilarating,” adds KANSAS lead vocalist Ronnie Platt. “Let me tell you, after a decade of performing in the band, the energy the fans bring each night continues to give me goosebumps. Fans in attendance seem to continue to raise their energy level and that just makes it even more fun for us up on stage than it already is!”

“As in life, our entire career has been a winding journey,” adds original guitarist Richard Williams. “Whether it’s been the ‘original’ lineup signing with Don Kirshner, years on the bus, touring with Queen, and finally worldwide success peaking with Leftoverture & Point of Know Return.” Williams goes on to remember, “That was followed by various lineup changes, the valleys of the 90’s and ‘dinosaur bands’ losing steam, to our most recent ‘rebirth’ and success of our latest new music over the last decade.” Williams concludes, “There have been and continue to be several forks in the road of that journey. This 50th Anniversary Tour and release represent that journey and the forks along that road.”

To further celebrate the band’s 50th Anniversary, InsideOutMusic has released Another Fork in the Road – 50 Years of KANSAS. The 3-CD career-spanning collection features carefully selected tracks from across KANSAS’s sizable discography. It also includes a new version of the song ‘Can I Tell You.’ Originally released on their 1974 debut album, the song is updated by the current lineup. Another Fork in the Road – 50 Years of KANSAS is available now. Fans can order it HERE

KANSAS boasts a lineup including original guitarist Richard Williams, bassist & vocalist Billy Greer, lead vocalist & keyboardist Ronnie Platt, keyboardist & vocalist Tom Brislin, violinist & guitarist Joe Deninzon, and original drummer Phil Ehart. Drummer Eric Holmquist is performing on drums while Phil Ehart continues to recover from a major heart attack.

d4vd Announces “My House Is Not A Home” North American & European Summer Headlining Tour

0

Today, 18-year-old visionary artist d4vd announces his summer headline My House is Not a Home Tour, where he will be playing his largest venues to date. The run will begin in Toronto on June 5th and make stops in major international markets including New York, Los Angeles, London, Paris, and more, before wrapping in Chicago for a newly announced set at Lollapalooza. In addition to these the summer run of dates, d4vd will also be gracing the stages at previously announced festivals including Governor’s Ball, Bonnaroo, and Boston Calling. The singer-songwriter announces the tour fresh off the heels of an electrifying surprise set in his hometown of Houston at White Oak Music Hall last night – which sold out minutes upon announcement.

Artist presales begin tomorrow, March 20th, and general onsale begins this Friday, March 22nd at 10AM local time. See the full list of tour dates below, and visit https://www.d4vd.io/tour/ for tickets and additional information.

Earlier this month, d4vd released his latest single “My House Is Not A Home,” a poignant, alternative ballad of loneliness—a story of leaving home, moving to Los Angeles, and a strained relationship finally falling apart. It showcases his writerly eye for detail, with some of his most personal and vivid lyrics yet, and also his remarkable vocal range; he climbs to the very top of his register, singing in a falsetto that stops the listener in their tracks. The accompanying music video, directed by close collaborator Raheem Powell (@RAHEEMISBLIND), sees d4vd leaving the past behind as he strolls through a worn-in yet empty house, haunted by childhood trinkets & photographs that seemingly once teemed with life and joy. Stream/download the track HERE and watch the accompanying music video HERE. Watch d4vd’s recent VEVO live performance of the track HERE.

Previously, d4vd released his two-pack single“Withering” which included new songs “Leave Her” and “2016.” Both tracks saw d4vd lean into his pop-rock sensibilities, and upon release received acclaim from the likes of HypebeastBETUPROXX, and many more – watch his performance video of “Leave Her” HERE.

d4vd kicked off 2024 following a monumental year that saw him soar to new heights. His career-defining single “Romantic Homicide” – which resonated with millions worldwide upon release in July 2022 and has since surpassed 1 billion streams across platforms – peaked at #33 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart and is part of d4vd’s debut Petals To Thorns EP which debuted at #1 on Billboard Heatseakers albums (currently spending its 40th week on the chart). He also performed the song on  Jimmy Kimmy Live! marking his late night television debut – watch the performance HERE. d4vd also joined SZA on the fall leg of her SOS Tour and performed at some of the hottest festivals including Austin City Limits, Tyler The Creator’s Camp Flog Gnaw Carnival, and more.

Just over a year ago, d4vd began making music on the app BandLab after multiple copyright strikes on his popular Fortnite YouTube channel. He has since released two successful EPs (Petals to Thorns & The Lost Petals), sold-out two headlining tours, and performed during the entirety of the Valentino Men’s SS24 Fashion Week show in Milan. His efforts were recognized as part of Billboard’s 21 under 21 and Variety’s Young Hollywood Impact Report lists, and he received a Streamy Award Nomination for “Here With Me” in the “Rolling Stone Sound of the Year” category.

d4vd, born David Burke, emerged as a visionary artist only one year after he began writing and recording heart-piercing tracks alone in his sister’s closet in Houston, Texas. d4vd developed his eclectic taste in rap and indie music from internet wormholes and fan-made Fortnite videos on YouTube, which he also started creating as a homeschooled teenager. As an avid player who has amassed over fifty thousand subscribers on his gaming channel, he noticed that the songs in his game montages were getting copyright strikes, and his mother suggested that he write original music as a solution. This motivated d4vd to start recording his own tracks after discovering an easy-to-use music-making app called BandLab. He’s released a smattering of singles touching everything from indie-alternative to pop to R&B, and the 18-year-old scored a breakout hit in the summer of 2022 with the now RIAA Multi-Platinum certified melancholic indie rock song “Romantic Homicide.” Recorded entirely on an iPhone, the track reached No. 34 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart and led to d4vd signing to Darkroom/Interscope before graduating high school. His slow-building beachy ballad, “Here With Me” followed, breaking into the Billboard Hot 100 in January 2023 and now RIAA Platinum Certified. d4vd’s debut EP Petals To Thorns established him as a genre-defying newcomer and one of the best new emerging acts, corroborated by his recent Billboard 21 Under 21 and Variety Young Hollywood honors. His intuitive command of lyricism stems from his years of scribbling raps and poems in his journal since childhood and his versatile interests shine in his music, drawing primarily from manga and anime. Following on the heels of his spring headline ‘The Root of it All’ debut tour, which sold out immediately upon going on sale, and a successful run of sold-out European tour dates, d4vd brought his ‘Petals To Thorns’ tour to larger stages in the US than ever before. Amid his European run, d4vd put on a show-stopping performance at the Valentino Men’s SS24 Fashion Week show in Milan. He recently followed up his debut EP with The Lost Petals EP – a collection of five songs that fit into the world of Petals To Thorns and serve as a continuation of that project before d4vd moves into his next phase of music. d4vd recently joined R&B powerhouse SZA on the second leg of her North American S.O.S. tour.

How to Pick the Perfect Instrument for Your Child

0

By Mitch Rice

As a parent, it is natural to want to encourage your child to be their best and reach their full potential in life. From supporting their play, health and well-being to nurturing their passions and talents, providing them with the opportunities and resources they need to flourish in life is something every parent aspires to offer their child.

One way parents can spark the interest and imagination of their children is by encouraging them to learn a musical instrument. Not only can this teach them valuable skills such as discipline, dedication, and self-expression, but can also instill them with a love of music. If you would like to help your child pick out the perfect musical instrument for them, this article has outlined some tips that can guide you in this endeavor.

Consider Their Interests

When choosing an instrument for your child it is beneficial to consider their interests first. This will greatly increase the chances of them enjoying their learning experience and willingly putting in the time and effort required to succeed.

Begin by asking your child if there is an instrument they are drawn to. Perhaps they enjoy listening to a particular artist or type of music or have expressed an interest in learning a certain instrument. By considering your child’s musical interests you can help guide them toward an instrument that they feel inspired and motivated to learn, allowing for a more enriching and rewarding musical journey.

Consider Their Personality

Your child’s personality is another important factor to consider when looking for the right instrument. Finding one that plays to your child’s natural strengths and styles of learning can enhance their enjoyment and provide them with an outlet that allows them to express this side of their personality.

Take into account your child’s temperament and energy levels. Are they outgoing and boisterous or more reserved and introspective? A child with an abundance of energy and enthusiasm may enjoy the physical demands needed to play the drums, while a more contemplative and quieter child may prefer the softer sounds of a flute or the gentle keys of a piano. You can find more information on piano lessons by visiting South Shore Piano School.

Consider the Cost

It is also important to factor in the cost involved in picking an instrument for your child. Certain instruments have higher upfront costs such as pianos, cellos, and saxophones while others like recorders, keyboards, and ukuleles are generally less expensive.

Despite the cost of the instrument, you can always find ways to make learning it accessible as well as affordable.  For example, your child’s school may offer music education where they make a specific instrument freely available or offer it for a small fee. This will typically involve music lessons too which can further reduce your costs.

Another option to explore is instrument rental. This can be beneficial when your child wishes to explore playing a particular instrument without you having to commit to purchasing it outright. This option will also save you from having to incur any repair or maintenance costs needed to keep the instrument in good working order.

Taking these points into consideration can help you guide your child toward the right musical instrument for them, supporting them in their musical enjoyment and explorations.

By Mitch Rice

Recently, in order to retain their players and attract new visitors, casinos have been inventing more and more promotions that can interest experienced players and diversify their stay on the website. In addition, online gaming platforms offer to assess your level in this way and just have fun taking part in friendly competitions with other players. This is how tournaments appeared, which quickly gained their popularity due to the huge number of positive aspects.

What do you know about tournaments

Tournaments are quite common, online casinos around the world offer this option to their players. Tournaments are presented in almost all popular casinos, such as Justcasino Canada. There are many types of tournaments, each of which has its own rules, conditions, duration and different allowed games. However, whatever tournament you want to participate in, be sure that you will get a completely new feeling compared to the experience of playing in an online casino before. You will also get the opportunity to interact with other players from the comfort of your room. Moreover, online casino tournaments are an opportunity to increase your winnings for real money. However, the risks of losses are also present. For online casinos, this is a way to motivate players to place bets, as well as various bonuses and promotions.

Advantages of participating in online casino tournaments:

Besides the fact that participating in tournaments is fun and interesting, there are other reasons to take a closer look at playing in the tournament if you are still in doubt. Tournaments have many advantages that can increase the chance of getting a bigger win or bring other benefits.

  • Unlike the usual game mode, such as slots, in the tournament you have the opportunity to win part of the big jackpot.
  • You can also compete with real players around the world and improve your skills, tactics and strategy. Moreover, you can learn from other people’s experience and test their game strategies for yourself, as many professional poker players participate in these tournaments. Tournaments provide not only an opportunity to play against the best, but also to learn from them.
  • You have the opportunity to make a big profit with fewer investments. Yes, there are entry fees in tournaments, but as a rule they are very small and almost always fixed. But in a regular casino game, you always need to place a bet for a certain amount before you can play.

How can I participate in online casino tournaments?

In order to participate in the tournament at most online casinos, you will most likely be required to pay a fixed entry fee. This fee is never too large, so you don’t have to worry. In some casinos, participation is also carried out by opening a real money account. Only after that, players who are necessarily registered on the site can start competing with each other for real money in various available games. Some online casino tournaments are specifically designed for loyal or VIP players who regularly make large deposits or simply use the site for a long time and regularly. Now we will look at all the existing types of tournaments.

What do you need to know about their differences?

Let’s have a look on another type of tournament that is open to all players who are registered in an online casino. More often, these are just regular tournaments that are held all the time. Such tournaments never require an entrance fee, but they offer only one type of slot, but there are exceptions.

Frequently in tournaments where an entry fee is required, the date, time and duration of the competition are planned and determined in advance. Online casino tournaments of this type can be designed for both experienced players and those who have just started playing.

There is also a type of tournaments when online casinos organize tournaments for their most popular games in order to attract new customers, such tournaments are held quite regularly, they are free and available to everyone.

Don’t be afraid to try yourself in different types of tournaments and explore new opportunities that the casino offers, perhaps that’s where your biggest winnings are waiting for you.

Live Nation’s On The Road Again Has Supported 4,000+ Developing Artists & Will Continue Rolling Through 2024

0

The On the Road Again program will continue rolling out extra support to every artist playing shows at Live Nation’s clubs through 2024. Launched last fall with the legendary Willie Nelson, On the Road Again helps developing artists on tour and recognizes crews working tirelessly behind the scenes.

For every show played in an On The Road Again venue, each headliner and support act receives $1,500 in gas and travel cash on top of nightly performance compensation. Additionally, artists keep 100% of merch profits as On the Road Again clubs do not charge merchandise selling fees.

“Our goal was to make touring a little easier and we’ve accomplished that night after night for over 4,000 artists, with more on the way,” said Willie Nelson.

On The Road Again has distributed tens of millions of dollars to over 4,000 artists and counting, with no set end date for the program. The program also distributed special bonuses and elevated club staff to a $20 minimum wage to recognize those working to support developing artists behind the scenes.

“We’re proud to keep On The Road Again rolling strong. Supporting club artists strengthens the future of music,” said Michael Rapino, President and CEO, Live Nation Entertainment.

Live shows are more important than ever for artists as they get the bulk of their income from touring. Even while live music is booming like never before, hardworking club artists are most impacted as tour costs rise and fluctuate – particularly as they aim to keep their ticket prices affordable for fans.

On the Road Again is a true collaboration that draws on insights from Nelson’s years on the road as well as feedback from touring artists, their teams and venue operators to help support day to day life on tour. All benefits from On the Road Again are being provided directly from the venue’s existing earnings, with no increases to consumers.
