Elbow Release New Single “Balu” From Forthcoming Studio Album, Audio Vertigo

0

Ahead of the release of their tenth studio album, Audio Vertigo on March 22, elbow reveal a further track from that album in the shape of “Balu”. Described by UNCUT as a gothic funk groove in a recent 4 star album review, the track title is a reference to the nickname of singer Guy Garvey’s nephew (‘a great bloke’) and provides further hints for fans of the gnarly, seedy grooves that power the album.

“Balu” shares much musical DNA with the wider album; a focus on rhythm, a willingness to experiment with new sounds, and a love of beats that reflects the freedom the band felt throughout the recording process.

Early critical responses to AUDIO VERTIGO, have been overwhelmingly positive with MOJO delivering a 4-star review and noting that their tenth is suitably landmark whilst PROG thrilled to the energising lattice of fizzing synths that is “Balu” before declaring that their 10th LP is special.

‘Balu’ is available as a digital download and to stream on all services.

The album, Audio Vertigo, will be released on March 22nd, 2024, on limited and standard vinyl editions, CD, and digital.

Sonopress Produces The World’s First EcoRecord And It’s The New Liam Gallagher & John Squire Album

0

After months of preparation, Sonopress, a leading storage media producer, has produced and delivered the first EcoRecord order for its client Warner Music Group (WMG). It has manufactured sustainable LPs in orange for an exclusive release of the eponymous joint album from two of rock’s greatest icons, Liam Gallagher & John Squire. The new album is out now, released by WMG’s Warner Records label. The EcoRecord is available exclusively at Amazon worldwide as well as JB Hi-Fi in Australia.

The EcoRecord is a revolutionary new form of long-playing record that uses recyclable polyethylene terephthalate (PET) instead of polyvinyl chloride (PVC) as base material. No natural gas or steam is used in the production process, meaning that the environmental impact of the manufacturing process is reduced by up to 85% compared to the conventional method.

Sven Deutschmann, Managing Director of Sonopress, is very glad with the successful launch: “We’re delighted that Rock legends Liam Gallagher and John Squire have chosen to release an edition of their first joint album as an environmentally friendly EcoRecord. We’ve used the past few weeks to meticulously check every production detail, refine all production parameters, and optimize the quality of the finished product, so we could go into regular production at the beginning of the year with complete confidence. It’s great to be able to finally talk about the project after many months of hard work, the team at Sonopress have smashed it.”

Miriam Lessar, VP, Global Release Management, Warner Music International, adds: “We’re proud to launch this stunning sounding, vibrant EcoRecord alongside Warner Records, Liam and John, and Sonopress. We’re huge advocates of sustainability at Warner Music Group, it’s vitally important for its artists and employees, and we hope to continue to lead by example in the industry. This is just the beginning of our journey, with exciting innovations to come as we advance more climate conscious products aligned with our climate goals.”

The world’s first EcoRecords were produced on a new injection molding machine with nozzle contact pressures of up to 300 tons. The production line was completed at the end of last year along with other required special tools and additional equipment, which were also developed entirely by Sonopress. It used the same injection molding process that has been used for decades to produce laser discs, CDs, DVDs, and other digital storage media. The EcoRecord’s launch comes at a time when the global vinyl market continues to grow. According to the IFPI, revenues rose by 17.1% in 2022, the third consecutive year of double-digit growth.

Billy Idol To Celebrate 40th Anniversary Of ‘Rebel Yell’ With Deluxe Expanded Edition Due April 26

0

Rock legend Billy Idol is set to celebrate the 40th anniversary of his landmark album Rebel Yell with a deluxe expanded edition due April 26 via Capitol/UMe/Universal Music Canada. Available for pre-order on Friday, March 8, the reissue includes a selection of previously unreleased songs and demos, the Poolside remix of Idol’s smash hit “Eyes Without A Face” and the never-before-heard Billy Idol/Steve Stevens original “Best Way Out of Here” from the original sessions. Idol’s never-before-released cover of the Rose Royce single “Love Don’t Live Here Anymore” from the album’s original recording sessions will be available to download/stream on March 8 as well.

Originally released in November 1983, Rebel Yell is the twice-platinum follow-up to Idol’s self-titled debut. The album features the iconic singles “Eyes Without a Face,” Flesh for Fantasy,” “Rebel Yell,” and “Catch My Fall.” The reissue is available in 2xLP, 2xCD, and digital formats. See below for complete track listings.

Idol recently released the concert film Billy Idol: State Line, a Vertigo Live concert film documenting his April 2023 show at the famed Hoover Dam—the first-ever concert performed at the location—on DVD and Blu-ray following a successful limited theatrical run. The film highlights the history and significance of Hoover Dam and includes performances from two unique sets of Billy Idol’s iconic hits: a full band concert at sunset with special guests that electrified and illuminated the surrounding Black Canyon, and an acoustic duo set on the roof of the powerhouse at the foot of Hoover Dam straddling the Colorado River, directly on the Nevada/Arizona state line. For both sets, Idol is joined by his longtime collaborator and guitar player Steve Stevens, as well as special guests Alison Mosshart (The Kills, The Dead Weather), Steve Jones (Sex Pistols, Generation Sex) and Tony Kanal (No Doubt).

For 46 years, Billy Idol has been one of the definitive faces and voices of rock’n’roll. Between 1977 and 1981, Idol released three albums with Generation X as their camera-ready frontman. In 1982, he embarked on a transatlantic/trans-genre solo career that integrated the bold and simple lines of punk and rock’n’roll decadence. Touring consistently around the world for the last ten years and showing no signs of slowing down, Idol released both The Roadside EP in 2021 and The Cage EP in 2022 on Dark Horse Records, earning praise from fans and critics alike. In January, Idol cemented his name among Hollywood legends with the first Walk of Fame Star of 2023.

10 Things You Need To Avoid When Selling Merchandise As A Musician

0

Selling merchandise is a vital aspect of a musician’s business, providing not only an additional revenue stream but also a way to strengthen fan engagement and brand loyalty. However, navigating the world of merchandise sales can be challenging, particularly for independent artists or those new to the industry. To help musicians maximize their merchandise sales and avoid common pitfalls, we’ve compiled a list of ten things to steer clear of when selling their goods. From neglecting merchandise quality and overpricing items to inadequate promotion and poor customer service, these tips will provide valuable insights into what not to do when selling merchandise as a musician. By avoiding these missteps and implementing strategic merchandising practices, musicians can enhance their brand presence, increase revenue, and cultivate stronger connections with their fans.

1. Neglecting to consider the quality of merchandise: Don’t compromise on the quality of your merchandise. Invest in high-quality materials and printing to ensure that your merchandise reflects positively on your brand.
2. Overpricing or underpricing items: Don’t set prices arbitrarily. Research the market, consider production costs, and price your merchandise competitively to attract buyers without sacrificing your profit margins.
3. Limited variety: Don’t offer a limited selection of merchandise. Provide a diverse range of items, including t-shirts, hats, posters, stickers, and more, to cater to different preferences and budgets.
4. Poor design choices: Don’t overlook the importance of attractive and engaging designs. Invest in professional design services or collaborate with talented artists to create visually appealing merchandise that resonates with your fans.
5. Neglecting online sales opportunities: Don’t rely solely on selling merchandise at live shows. Set up an online store or utilize e-commerce platforms to reach a broader audience and generate additional revenue.
6. Inadequate display and presentation: Don’t underestimate the impact of presentation. Ensure that your merchandise table is well-organized, visually appealing, and easily accessible to encourage browsing and purchases.
7. Lack of promotion: Don’t assume that fans will automatically buy your merchandise. Promote your merchandise before, during, and after shows through social media, email newsletters, and other marketing channels to maximize visibility and sales.
8. Poor customer service: Don’t overlook the importance of providing excellent customer service. Be friendly, approachable, and responsive to inquiries, feedback, and concerns from customers to build trust and loyalty.
9. Ignoring fan feedback: Don’t ignore feedback from your fans. Pay attention to their preferences, suggestions, and requests regarding merchandise to inform future product offerings and improve the overall shopping experience.
10. Failing to track inventory and sales: Don’t neglect to keep track of your inventory and sales data. Implement inventory management systems and regularly monitor sales metrics to identify popular items, manage stock levels, and make informed business decisions.

Billboard Women In Music Expands to Canada in 2024

1

Billboard Canada is recognizing the trailblazing women making waves in the Canadian music industry.

With Billboard broadening its reach in Canada, its esteemed Billboard Women In Music event is coming north. This initiative celebrates and acknowledges the contributions of women and gender-diverse individuals in the music industry, fostering inspiration across generations. In 2024, this accolade will be introduced to Canada, featuring a highly anticipated celebration event in June.

As Women’s History Month gets underway, nominations will open on Tuesday, March 5, 2024 – which will live on as an exciting day for Canadian women in music.

Awards are open to trailblazing women and gender-diverse members of the Canadian music industry in a variety of fields, from management to publishing, rights orgs to live music.

Billboard’s Women In Music recognizes women inspiring change both behind-the-scenes and onstage, with major artists gracing the ceremony’s stages over the years.

Billboard Canada will choose a Woman of the Year for 2024, a recording artist who has exemplified leadership and social progress in the changing music business.

Other categories include the Rising Star award, the Impact award (won in 2020 by Brampton’s Jessie Reyez) and Producer of the Year, among others. The Icon award, given to an artist who has made historic contributions to the industry and artistry, has been given to two major Canadian artists: Shania Twain in 2016 and Alanis Morissette in 2019.

Major industry figures will also be in the spotlight. Canadian executive Golnar Khosrowshahi, the founder and CEO of Reservoir Media, one of the biggest independent music companies in the world, is an Executive of the Year hall of famer, and this year offered this piece of advice: “Pivot to a path that allows for growth equally across your professional and personal lives. You should not have to compromise, but rather be empowered to find the route that allows for the multitudes present in you.”

Billboard’s Women of the Year is peer-nominated, with final selections made by the staff at Billboard Canada. Nominations are now open at this link.

Montreal Punk Suffragettes Bad Skin Take A Vacation From Restraint With “We Are The Girls”

0

How many paeans to the power of women are we going to have to hear? If you dared ask Montreal grunge-pop punkers Bad Skin that question, the answer you’d get would probably be “Until you get it through your thick skull.”

Waving their musical middle finger proudly in the tradition of musical forebears like L7, Bikini Kill and No Doubt, the Canadian quartet make their own contribution to the hear-us-roar tradition with “We Are the Girls,” an exhilarating anthem that proves it’s never a bad time to fly the flag for the sisterhood—especially when you do it with the style, smarts and sass of this perfectly turned single, which has “instant classic” graffiti-ed all over it.

Heeding the battle cry of singer/rhythm guitarist Dope, the instrumental axis of lead guitarist Caro, bassist Eugeni and drummer Azalee charges forward to advance a message of unabashedly feminist rebellion:

I don’t care what you say
Or whisper about me
Hey hey hey, we know ‘Cause we are the girls
It’s alright I know what’s going on
We know ‘cause we are the girls

“We made this song for one main purpose: to be blasted and sung out loud,” the band says. “We are all strong women, with strong personalities, from different backgrounds and realities, and we wanted this song to be accessible to everyone who doesn’t fit the mold put in place by the straight white male.”

The track has all the musical pluses you’d expect of the genre: slashing guitars; furious, double-time drumming; and a chant that’s made for endless repetition on nights out with the squad. But pause your headbanging long enough to really listen, and you’ll detect the kind of subtle details that separate the merely serviceable from the great. Notice, for instance, how the sweet release of each chorus is set up by a tense, too-close-for-comfort chord shift that even owes a slight debt to flamenco, for God’s sake.

And that ain’t the half of the cross-cultural collaboration that’s going on here. Joining the group on the track are South Korean sister act Rumkicks, whose frontwoman, Yaewon Jeong, makes the perfect foil for Dope’s declarations of defiance. The whole band joins Bad Skin for the attendant music video, taking to the streets to mug and provoke the camera like 1977 never ended.

“We are big fans of their work, of their music, of their stance, of what they have been through as an all-women punk band,” the members of Bad Skin say of Rumkicks. “And we especially relate to their attitude towards it all. We were very excited that they decided to join us in this crazy project with so much enthusiasm.”

Enthusiasm has been a hallmark of the Bad Skin experience since the band formed in the most punk of ways: Dope put up some flyers and posters looking for musicians, and Caro answered the call. Thanks to Facebook, Eugeni and Azalee soon followed suit. That was in 2016; since then, the group has appeared on stages around the world, including prestigious festival gigs and opening slots for the likes of Bad Religion. And they’ve released a series of incendiary recordings like the Live Fast Die Punk EP and the singles “Clowns for President” and “Completely Insane.”

To that list we can now add “We Are the Girls,” perhaps the most persuasive evidence yet of Bad Skin’s jaw-jutting disobedience. Released on Dance Plant Records—which the band considers not just a label but an assemblage of mentors—it’s a bold step forward in their mission to become the best version of themselves while shining a light on injustice and giving voice to the voiceless. As for all you fellas out there: It probably wouldn’t kill you to just listen for once.
