Aaron May Announces First Headline ‘MAKEORBREAK’ North American Tour 2024

0

With platinum-certified hits and millions of streams under his belt, Houston rapper Aaron May is set to make his official debut to the touring stage with his headlining MAKEORBREAK NORTH AMERICAN TOUR 2024 this May. Produced by Live Nation, the 14-city trek kicks off on May 9th at Neptune Theatre in Seattle making stops across North America in Los Angeles, his hometown of Houston, New York, and more before wrapping up in Chicago at Concord Music Hall on June 1st.

Hailing from Houston’s Alief neighborhood, Aaron May has carved an unconventional path to success. Inspired by the positive reception of his debut video “Ride” on Reddit at just 17, May wrote, recorded, and produced much of his acclaimed debut album, CHASE, while still in high school for only a few hundred dollars. Released independently in February 2019, CHASE’s timeless energy, propelled by the platinum-certified single “Let Go,” garnered significant support from Spotify, Apple Music, Complex Magazine, and others, sparking a wave of label interest. Despite offers, May chose to remain fiercely independent, continuing to self-release hit singles, EPs, and collaborations. Now, five years and 750 million streams later, he maintains full ownership of his masters and publishing, funding his own marketing efforts and often taking on roles as producer and director for his music videos and those of fellow artists on his Houston-based label, MOVEINTHEAM. Currently, May is in the final stages of completing his highly anticipated new project set for release this Spring.

Air Announces North American Tour Dates

0

Legendary French duo AIR announces an extensive North American tour to celebrate the 25th anniversary of their debut album Moon Safari. Similar to their recent European tour, which sold out in record time, AIR will be playing their widely celebrated album in its entirety for the first time ever. This announcement closely trails last Friday’s release of the demo version of “New Star In The Sky” to all DSPs prior to the digital release of the 25th anniversary deluxe album on March 15th, which features over ten cherry-picked Moon Safari audio rarities.

AIR’s boundary-pushing album has long been praised for its innovative sonics that have inspired countless musicians to think outside the box, so much so that their influence even transcended their own medium. Since Nicolas Godin and Jean-Benoit Dunckel formed the band in 1995, the prolific duo has released six albums in addition to their acclaimed EP Premiers Symptômes, which was followed by the release of the aforementioned classic Moon Safari along with two soundtracks that all together sold millions of copies. AIR garnered an extensive list of worldwide accolades for their unique brand of downtempo electronic music that not only sculpted the sound for the next generation of electronic-influenced pop music but also was able to withstand the test of time in its own right.

Two students of astrophysics and architecture walk into a bar on the moon. This sounds like the beginning of a joke — but in the waning light of the 20th century, it really happened, leaving a serious imprint on pop culture.

On January 16th 1998, AIR released Moon Safari, an album which catapulted Nicolas Godin and Jean-Benoit Dunckel to the uppermost rung of electronic music’s ladder. Their sound – Fender Rhodes trills, loping basslines, and sensual-yet-playful vocal hooks, all woven into a texture as fine and luxe as chiffon — conjured the sensation of a space-age cocktail designed to be sipped at a leisurely pace. It’s not challenging to see how this curious little record became a global sensation.

“The hype was a violent experience,” reflects Jean-Benoit Dunckel, 25 years later. “AIR’s music is not accessible or easy to discern: The format is strange, the voices are strange, the subjects are strange. Even ‘Sexy Boy’ sounds strange. We were a duo doing some electronic thing, dreaming of selling 10,000 copies and being recognized by other musicians as cool. Then suddenly, we met the world. Personally, it took me time to see that we could be a big, important band.”

Formed in 1995 from the remnants of prior rock outfit Orange, AIR’s debut album was a paradox made flesh. Here were two 20-somethings with just a single prior EP under their belts, yet they exuded on tape the confidence and pedigree of seasoned pros. The English press deemed them acutely French; meanwhile, the French press pondered if they might actually be English.

Although their influences were unusual and ambitious they were avowedly anti-commercial, Godin and Dunckel were blessed with the ability to intuit pop songcraft which could, and did, captivate mass media.

In short, Moon Safari was a nest of contradictions. Today, the record’s legacy is canonical, but at the time of release, its multi-million success was far from assured.

“This kind of bedroom music was all about fantasy,” says Nicolas Godin. “In my mind, I was picturing myself at Capitol Records, surrounded by all the best musicians, feeling like Burt Bacharach. In reality, I was in the fucking 18th arrondissement of Paris, with a sampler, singing into one microphone. But when your fantasy is so strong, I think it goes in the wires and through the speakers. The power of Moon Safari was to make people believe in what we believed in.”

During Moon Safari’s gestation in 1996-97, a “new wind of freedom and creativity was carrying through the same creative part of Paris,” recalls Duckel. “And it was not only in music – graphic design, cinema, and fashion were alive.” This spark of youthfulness and sense of renewed pride in French creation encouraged AIR to push beyond the Moog-fixation exhibited by stars of the previous generation, such as Jean-Michel Jarre and Magma while also simultaneously avoiding the aromanticism of cheap, raved-up synthesizer zaps.

Instead, according to Godin, AIR’s own mirepoix boiled down to a few core ingredients. Ravel and Debussy informed the dreaminess, floating chords, and heritage of pre-rock music” you might be able to detect. That sense of silver-screen flair came from the grooves of John Barry and Ennio Morricone. As for the tempo? Portishead.

“Suddenly, all the things I liked and was good at — slow, downtempo soundtrack music — could bring success. We were not formulating success itself. But until 1994, I was listening to the radio and thinking, ‘There’s no way I will make it; whatever this sound of today is, it is not me.’ But then, I heard Portishead’s Dummy on the radio — and thought to myself. ‘…I can make that.”

Though far from club hounds, Godin and Dunckel were still attuned to the sensation of riding out a night’s highs into the vaporous sprawl of mid-morning Moon Safari found as much purchase as the comedown record du jour as it did for any other function. In no time at all, AIR’s downtempo influence was easy to detect all around.

From the mellowed-out sketches of late-period Stereolab and departure-lounge exotica of The Avalanches to — at the other end of the valorous scale — ten-a-penny chillout compilations, the relative peace which marked the late 1990s and early 2000s offered a moment to slow down and reflect; to lean into a sonic mode which Dunckel now summarizes as “a deep, universal spell, full of love and mystery.”

While AIR’s precise alchemy and absence of geographical anchoring placed Moon Safari outside the grip of temporality or trend, the album happened to be an orbiting satellite which intersected with the world below’s revolutions at precisely the right moment.

Through Moon Safari, AIR transfixed some of the great visionaries of the late 20th century — David Bowie, Madonna, Beck — as well as influencing preeminent aesthetes of the incoming age – including Charlotte Gainsbourg Kevin Parker, and Sofia Coppola, whose creative relationship with AIR became as synergetic as that of Angelo Badalamenti and David Lynch (another fan, while we’re here.) AIR helped fan the flames of a rare Francophilia which surging through the typically nativist British charts in 1998. Moon Safari birthed three hit singles in “Kelly Watch The Stars,” “All I Need” and “Sexy Boy,” shifted over half a million copies in the UK, and pushed AIR into headline contention at banner festivals such as Glastonbury. This in turn brought American, European and even hesitant French audiences and critics in line, a ripple effect which continued into the mid-2000s, with a string of successive top 10 albums for AIR, at home and abroad.

It also bundled AIR into a promotional game they were, by their own accounts rather unequipped for Enlisting a young Phoenix to thrash around as their backing band for TV appearances was, with the benefit of a quarter-century’s wisdom, perhaps an unwise decision. This moment of vibe vandalism, Thomas Mars has since said with impish delight, “kind of ruined AIR…we destroyed their sound.” (Smiles on both Dunckel and Godin’s faces confirm there are no hard feelings.)

25 years on, it’s not hard to alight upon why Moon Safari has stood the test of time. AIR’s unique grasp of pace and mood, surety of direction, and earworm hooks compelled the world toward it, and in turn, propelled AIR on toward posterity.

The duo’s early surprise that their outer zonal fantasies might capture international hearts and minds has since melted into a sense of deep gratification. Unbeknownst to them, millions stood by their televisions, radios, and record players, waiting to receive this particular longwave transmission from somewhere in the cosmos.

Moreover, the satisfaction arises from executing such a precise studio vision with zero concessions. On an artistic level, AIR achieved exactly what they set out to do; their mission was a resoundingly successful one.

“To me,” Godin concludes, “Moon Safari is perfect.”

I Prevail + Halestorm Announce Co-Headline Tour For Summer 2024 With Hollywood Undead + Fit For A King

0

Another “can’t miss” tour of Summer 2024 is here! Halestorm and I Prevail will embark on a massive co-headline tour this summer, produced by Live Nation. The tour kicks off on July 9 in Raleigh and runs through August 17 in Las Vegas.

Hollywood Undead and Fit For A King will serve as support, making this a powerhouse package that will be remembered as one of Summer 2024’s best lineups.

“We’re thrilled to join forces with Halestorm this summer,” states I Prevail’s Eric Vanlerberghe. “Touring with Halestorm is long overdue, as we admire their talent, energy, and dedication to rock music, and are thrilled to finally see it happen. This is going to be one of the best tours of the summer and one of the best we’ve ever done.”

“Freaks, we are so proud to announce that we are joining forces with I Prevail,” says Halestorm’s Lzzy Hale. “This isn’t your typical summer tour. This is two worlds colliding under one haven for our collective armies. And bringing you a show unlike any we’ve done before! We have a lot of surprises in store, so get your tickets now for an experience none of us will forget!”

Halestorm have partnered with mental health organization Sound Mind Live to engage fans to pledge support that will provide free-to-the-community mental health programming across the country for fans and the broader community.

Having amassed over 2.5 Billion streams globally, the Grammy-Award winning band Halestorm has grown from a childhood dream of siblings Lzzy and Arejay Hale into one of the most celebrated rock bands of the last two decades. Most recently, the band released Back From The Dead, their fifth full-length studio album which has tallied over 100 Million streams worldwide. Rolling Stone called the title track “a biting but cathartic howler about overcoming all obstacles,” and that song as well as “The Steeple” marked their fifth and sixth number ones at rock radio, respectively. Associated Press said the album “will definitely be in the running for best hard rock/metal album of the year.” Their previous album, Vicious, earned the band their second Grammy nomination, for Best Hard Rock Performance for the song “Uncomfortable,” the band’s fourth #1 at rock radio, and led Loudwire to name Halestorm “Rock Artist of the Decade” in 2019. Fronted by the incomparable Lzzy Hale with drummer Arejay Hale, guitarist Joe Hottinger, and bass player Josh Smith, Halestorm’s music has earned multiple Platinum and Gold Certifications from the RIAA, and the band has earned a reputation as a powerful live music force, headlining sold-out shows and topping festival bills around the world, and sharing the stage with icons including Heaven & Hell, Alice Cooper, Joan Jett, and Judas Priest. Additionally, Lzzy was named the first female brand ambassador for Gibson and served as host of AXS TV’s “A Year in Music.”

I Prevail have established themselves as the forerunners of the genre in the 21st century. Their latest release TRUE POWER, once again produced by Tyler Smyth, features the sort of stadium-sized riffs that will rattle your teeth loose from your gums and unforgettable, supremely catchy melodies that will camp out in your brain for weeks at a time. The band also alternately mixes screamed vocals that sound as though they crawled from the depths of hell with soaring, emotional vocals and heartfelt, intimate lyrics that go so deep, they hit marrow. The end result is an album that resonates with the listener in the most personal way. Rising to an arena level and receiving two Grammy nominations — Best Rock Album for Trauma and Best Metal Performance for crushing lead single “Bow Down” — I Prevail proved that they were built to last. To date, they’ve racked up more than 4.1 billion global streams, are approaching 716 million YouTube views, and saw both “Hurricane” and “Bad Things” singles top Billboard’s Mainstream Rock Airplay chart in 2020 and 2022 respectively. A number of their singles and album Lifelines have now been certified Gold and Platinum, and they have been praised by press far and wide, including Forbes, Billboard, The Hollywood Reporter, and NPR. I Prevail have affirmed their position among the genre’s elite.

Formed in 2005, Hollywood Undead inched towards mainstream dominance under the radar with unprecedented success for a modern band. Preceding the current playlist-hopping genre-less boom, they defied stylistic boundaries from day one integrating rap, rock, and electronic. The band will be heading back out on the road in the Fall of 2023 with hip hop legend Tech N9ne co-head lining the HOLLYWOOD & N9NE Tour in support of their 8th studio album, Hotel Kalifornia.

Fit For A King’s musical style is rooted in metal and hardcore and uplifted by hypnotic hooks. Following the breakout LP Creation/Destruction [2013], they earned four consecutive Top 5 debuts on the Top Hard Rock Albums Chart with Slave to Nothing [2014], Deathgrip [2016], Dark Skies [2018], and The Path [2020]. The latter marked their first Top 10 on the Billboard Top Album Sales Chart. Plus, the band collaborated with fellow heavy-hitters such as August Burns Red and We Came As Romans. They’ve generated nearly 435 million streams over the course of their career, have toured with Pierce the Veil, I Prevail, The Devil Wears Prada, Motionless in White, and many more. Their latest The Hell We Create is out now via Solid State Records.

This selection of photographs is accompanied by an immense collection of ephemera sourced from the band’s archives, published here for the first time. Including Gord Downie’s handwritten lyrics, rare posters, tickets and tour passes, instruments, album artwork, clothing and much more, This Is Our Life affords the most highly intimate experience the band have ever allowed.

THIS IS OUR LIFE

Meticulously curated, This Is Our Life draws from hundreds of hours of interviews, not only with the band but also with fellow musicians, producers, and the dedicated crew that helped shape their story.

This Is Our Life begins in Kingston, Ontario, where all five band members attended the same high school. From here the group retrace their steps: from the intimate settings of college bars and downtown dives to the pinnacle of success, culminating in the incredible, bittersweet 2016 concert held in their hometown, broadcast live in Canada for an estimated audience of 11.7 million people.

‘It’s hard to say why the country embraced us the way it did. We just came at it with as honest an approach as we could. We never tried to jam it down anyone’s throat. You either liked us or you didn’t.’ – JOHNNY FAY

Allowing readers a first-hand account of their musical odyssey, driven by the poetic genius of lead singer Gord Downie, the band offers an unprecedented insight into their creative process as they reflect on iconic live shows and the dynamics that defined their enduring bond. Told in an original manuscript of over 130,000 words and filled with highs and lows, The Hip’s incredible, prismatic story is unlike any other.

‘I got to live the dream I’d been pursuing since I was ten years old. I made a life out of writing music and playing songs with my best friends in the world.’ – ROB BAKER

SOCAN Achieves Half-Billion Dollar Revenue Milestone

0

Today, SOCAN announces, for the first time in its history, that total annual revenue will exceed half a billion dollars collected in 2023. Similarly, distributions to music creators and publishers grew impressively to a record-high $442-million.

SOCAN revenue grew to an estimated $523-million in 2023, an 8% increase over 2022. The nearly $40-million growth is attributed mainly to increased revenue from digital and international sources, and continued return-to-normal activity bolstering General Licensing and Concerts.

Revenue from music uses that took place in Canada rose 8% to a high of $404-million. The increase is led by revenue from digital sources totalling $188-million, a 13% year-over-year increase, and General Licensing and Concerts increasing 28% to $48-million.

Revenue from music uses in international territories increased 9% to $120-million, a testament to the incredible talent and success of Canadian music creators on the global stage.

SOCAN distributions hit historic highs totalling an estimated $442-million in 2023, 22% higher than 2022.

2023 distributions include royalties paid to music creators and publishers derived from data matched to revenue received in 2022 and beginning of 2023.

SOCAN members benefited from significant increases in international distributions from $95-million to $102-million, an 8% increase, and Concert distributions from $6-million to $17-million, an over 200% increase, with return-to-normal activities.

In a year marked by record-breaking revenue and distributions, SOCAN recognizes this is not the experience of all Canadian music creators and publishers, and acknowledges that many SOCAN members are facing challenges with participating in royalties from digital sources.

“We take great pride in serving our songwriter, composer and music publisher members, and as we commemorate the 100th anniversary of the enactment of the Copyright Act of Canada, our dedication to legislative advocacy is stronger than ever,” said Jennifer Brown, SOCAN CEO. “We must work to level the playing field and SOCAN is wholly committed to creating the environment for a more promising and prosperous future for all of our members.”

SOCAN continues to invest in its member-first strategic plan initiated over two years ago, focusing on advocacy efforts, providing more member education and craft development opportunities, and prioritizing member experiences and outcomes. In 2023, SOCAN made the important decision to partner with Spanish Point Technologies to optimize the operational experience for members. The large-scale implementation and data migration is expected to be delivered in 2025.

As a result, the non-profit organization is experiencing improved member satisfaction and royalty outcomes while maintaining an expense-to-revenue ratio of 12%.

SOCAN’s annual report and final financial statements, including a complete overview of 2023 activities, will be available in advance of the SOCAN Annual and General meeting, scheduled for June 19, 2024, in Montreal.

SOCAN is a rights management organization that connects more than four million music creators worldwide, and more than a quarter-million businesses and individuals in Canada. More than 185,000 songwriters, composers, and music publishers are its direct members, and more than 100,000 organizations are Licensed To Play music across Canada. With a concerted use of progressive technology and unique data, SOCAN is dedicated to upholding the fundamental truths that music has value and music creators and publishers deserve fair compensation for their work.
