3-Time GRAMMY nominee and Blues Legend Eric Bibb Readies New Live at The Scala Theatre Album for April 5

0

Stony Plain Records, under an exclusive worldwide license agreement from Repute Records, will release on April 5th the new album from 2024’s “Best Traditional Blues Album” GRAMMY nominee and Blues/Roots music legend Eric Bibb, Live at The Scala Theatre. The upcoming disc follows 2023’s Ridin’, which has also received two Blues Music Award nominations from The Blues Foundation, whose winners will be announced May 9th in Memphis.

Eric Bibb also recently taped a performance at the SiriusXM Radio studios In New York City that will premiere on BB King’s “Bluesville” channel in April around his live album release, and then air shortly thereafter on “The Village.”

Performed in front of a live audience at Stockholm’s Scala Theatre in 2023, the atmosphere captured in these recordings is electric. Live at The Scala Theatre contains a selection of songs cherry-picked from Bibb’s history, infused with the folk and blues tradition with contemporary sensibilities. The performance features an all-star lineup of musicians including Eric’s longtime collaborator, musical director and producer Glen Scott on bass, keys, drums and backing vocals; Olle Linder on drums and acoustic bass; Johan Lindström on pedal steel and electric guitar; Christer Lyssarides on electric guitar and mandola; Esbjörn Hazelius on fiddle and cittern; Greger Andersson on harp; Lamine Cissokho on kora and vocals; special guest vocalists Sarah Dawn Finer, Rennie Mirro and Ulrika Bibb, as well as string arrangements by Erik Arvinder and David Davidson, performed by Hanna Helgegren and Sarah Cross on violins, Christopher Öhman on viola and Josef Ahlin on cello.

“The Live at The Scala concert was, without a doubt, the most ambitious gig and recording project of my career,” says Eric Bibb. “Captained by my super-talented friend, musical director and producer, Glen Scott and graced by an amazing array of musicians, the resulting album is one that defines me as an artist. I couldn’t be more pleased and eager to share it with you all.

“In selecting the album’s songs we wanted to cover three categories: 1)Tried and true fan favorites that had not appeared multiple times on previous live recordings; 2) A few songs from the recently released studio albums, Dear America and Ridin’; 3) At least one song that I’d never before recorded.

“Every song on the album holds a special place in my heart. I’ll elaborate on three of them: ‘Rosewood,’ which tells the story of the horrendous massacre in 1923, that wiped out the African American community of Rosewood in Florida, is both an important history lesson, particularly relevant today in the current climate of disunity in America and the world and hopefully, a story that encourages us to face and learn from our past. ‘Whole World’s Got The Blues’ is, in the way that songs can sometimes be, prescient. It is both a lament about the current state of the world and a warning. ‘Things Is ‘Bout Comin’ My Way,’ adapted from ‘Sittin’ On Top Of The World’ and written by Walter Vinson, is a bluesy affirmation that resonates with my own journey. And one of my fondest memories of that night at The Scala Theatre was being surrounded by the spirited singing, on stage and in the audience, of ‘Mole In The Ground.’“

With a career now spanning five decades, three Grammy nominations, a multitude of Blues Foundation awards and countless more accolades, Eric Bibb has secured his legacy as a legendary figure in the blues and roots genre.

As Eric reflects on his musical journey, gratitude pervades. Evolution is evident in his voice and guitar playing, with his words grounded in truth and fostering a vision of unity in a world filled with divisive rhetoric. Eric Bibb is more than a blues troubadour – he is a storyteller and philosopher. His legacy is not just in the notes he plays or the stages he graces but in the questions he poses and the hope he instills.

Live at The Scala Theatre is a continuation of the vision that informs Bibb’s artistry as a modern-day Blues troubadour. Grounded in the folk and blues tradition with contemporary sensibilities, Bibb’s music continues to reflect his thoughts on current world events and his own lived experiences, whilst remaining entertaining, uplifting, inspirational and relevant.

Eric Bibb summarizes the new album by saying: “To all the wonderful players, singers and facilitators who contributed to this triumphant endeavor, I can only say, from the bottom of my heart:

Thank You! Merci Mille! Tusen Tack!”

Sue Foley Announces New One Guitar Woman Album And Releases First Single – Elizabeth Cotten’s “Oh Babe It Ain’t No Lie”

0

Sue Foley’s new acoustic solo album, ONE GUITAR WOMAN is a moving tribute to the female pioneers of guitar, the women whose music and lives delivered the inspiration and paved the way for those that followed. Sue honors artists spanning a whole spectrum of styles. She writes in her liner notes, “They were massively talented, and they all possessed courage and vision which transformed both their cultures and the story of the guitar.”

True to the album title, Sue performs all these songs with ONE GUITAR. While many of Sue’s fans are used to seeing her playing “Pinky,” her pink paisley Fender Telecaster through her Fender Bassman amp, for this album she chose a nylon-string acoustic guitar, a flamenco Blanca made by master luthier Salvadore Castillo, purchased by Sue on a 2022 excursion to Paracho, Mexico.

The first single, available now, is “Oh Babe It Ain’t No Lie”, a delicately nuanced track from Elizabeth Cotten. Sue captures the playful yet plaintive tone of the original, but doesn’t imitate the voice of Cotten, who didn’t record until she was quite elderly. Sue sings in her own voice, which is strong and vibrant. “‘Oh Babe It Ain’t No Lie’ is one of my favorite songs to play on guitar,” says Sue. “I just love that Piedmont fingerpicking that was made famous by the incomparable, Elizabeth Cotten. Cotten had an original guitar style, as she played left-handed and upside down, so her songs are not easy to tackle. She also had such charm and character in her voice, and wit in her lyrics. Her songs can be challenging to learn but they’re always so fun and satisfying when you figure them out. This one just makes me smile every time I play it.”

ONE GUITAR WOMAN also covers the hard-driving Memphis Minnie and icons like Maybelle Carter and Sister Rosetta Tharpe, as well as heroes like French classical guitarist Ida Presti, Tejano sensation Lydia Mendoza, and the often-underrated Charo. Less well-known but equally compelling are Southern blues women Geeshie Wiley and Elvie Thomas. All in all, the twelve tracks of this album pay deference to eight female guitarists.

Foley is a complete artist, and the album features her songwriting as well as her guitar playing and singing. “Maybelle’s Guitar,” is Sue’s original composition that incorporates Maybelle Carter’s signature “Carter Scratch” guitar style while telling the story of the vast influence and power of the Carter Family’s music. Lydia Mendoza’s Tejano classic “Mal Hombre” is performed in Spanish, and Foley contributes her own English-language verse, which is far superior to the translation.

The album includes two instrumentals: “Romance in A Minor” by virtuoso violinist Niccolò Paganini is derived from guitarist Ida Presti’s interpretation. Sue’s version is heart-rending. Also featured is the explosive flamenco “La Malagueña”, popularized by Charo.

The full album will be released worldwide on March 29, 2024 on Stony Plain Records.

Sue will soon be debuting her ONE GUITAR WOMAN show, a solo show which will celebrate the lives, stories and music of the female pioneers of guitar. It will incorporate multimedia elements and present some great music as well as uplifting, provocative stories of brave, trailblazing women. This show will be presented in theaters on select dates through 2024.

Sue Foley has released thirteen albums and won many awards, including the Blues Music Award for Traditional Female Artist of the Year, which she has won three consecutive times; she is once again nominated in this category for 2024.

Manchester’s Rock Veteran LUNA COLLINS Unleashes Her Signature Sound in Latest Single ‘Man In The Mac’

0

Luna Collins, the seasoned pop-rock musician and former frontwoman for the all-female band, The Relay, has released her latest single, “Man In The Mac” – available now.

The San Francisco native was heavily influenced by the music of Motown and the Everly Brothers, but when she saw The Beatles on The Ed Sullivan Show for the first time, she knew she wanted to be like that. Moving to the UK at 17, she experienced the emergence of the punk scene with bands like The Sex Pistols, The Jam and The Clash. She intertwined the catchy, high-energy vibe of the punk movement with her Beatles-inspired melodies when she returned to the United States, touring with her group The Relay.

It was during that time that Luna set out on a trip to Portland aiming to broaden the band’s audience beyond San Francisco. As fate would have it, Luna’s unexpected meeting with the legendary Ray Davies, chief songwriter of the Kinks, at a Portland airport served as the inspiration for “Man In The Mac.”

“After this encounter with Ray Davies, I knew I wanted to write about him in a fun, yet mysterious way, and that was the birth of the song Man In The Mac. It ended up being a crowd favourite at gigs, but it was never recorded until now,” Luna excitedly explains.

Luna was the lead vocalist and pianist in Man In The Mac, joined by guitarist Danny Kehlenbeck and drummer Dan Wiebe. Additionally, the lineup includes backup vocals by Paul Kopf and mellotron played by Alec Palao. The production and mixing were creatively overseen by Danny Kehlenbeck at Airtight Studios in Manchester, UK, while the mastering was carried out by Frank Arkwright at Abbey Road Studios in London.

“The people on this track are some of the most talented in their fields of expertise. I have been working with Danny K for years at Airtight Studios since I moved to Manchester – it is my happy place and Danny reads my musical mind perfectly” says Luna.

Luna’s origins in music date back to the late 1960s Summer of Love. Resilience and a strong love for her work have been hallmarks of her musical journey, from time spent in UK pub bands to the highs and lows she experienced with The Relay. After returning to England in her 60s, Luna released an EP in 2022 that gave her the motivation to keep making music.

Renowned Canadian Trumpeter Mike Herriott Releases ‘Mercutio,’ A Musical Exploration of Shakespeare’s Beloved Character

0

Embarking on a captivating sonic journey, renowned Canadian trumpeter Mike Herriott delves into the intricacies of Shakespeare’s mesmerizing character, Mercutio, through his latest composition aptly titled “Mercutio,” found on his most recent album, Tales of Tricksters and Vagabonds.

Drawing inspiration from the bard’s insight into Mercutio’s vibrant yet tragic existence in “Romeo & Juliet,” Herriott crafts a musical narrative that mirrors the multifaceted nature of this beloved character.

It has been said that Shakespeare found his character of Mercutio in Romeo & Juliet to be so interesting that he had to kill him off, so attention wasn’t taken away from the story. Mercutio is Romeo’s close friend and becomes known for his humour and fun-loving demeanour.

As someone who, through this friendship with Romeo and his relation to the Capulets, is able to move easily between the feuding houses, he eventually takes it upon himself to fight Romeo’s fight for him against Juliet’s cousin, Tybalt. In his final moments, he curses both fighting houses for their ongoing pettiness. His last words, before life leaves his body, are a pun: “Ask for me tomorrow, and you shall find me a grave man.”.

This piece explores the playfulness and off-beat character of Mercutio; where humour is the juxtaposition of conflicting realities, this is reflected in the juxtaposition of conflicting rhythms. The drum solo fits in well to give us a version of the famous “Queen Mab” speech. The final statement of the melody gives us the struggle of Mercutio in his swordfight, with Romeo’s tragic intervention. In the end, listen as Mercutio’s essence dissipates into the universe with a short brass choral and piano arpeggio.

Bose Announces New Ultra Open Earbuds

0

Today, Bose introduces a breakthrough audio wearable that lets you hear the world around you while still enjoying your music uninterrupted. The new Bose Ultra Open Earbuds feature an innovative cuff-shaped design that looks as good as it sounds. They provide amazing comfort for all-day wear without making you choose between immersive audio and awareness. Pause for nothing and hear everything.

The Ultra Open Earbuds are available starting today for $299 on Bose.com and through select resellers.

“The one bud phenomenon is real. We know people want a way to listen to their music while still being connected to the world around them,” said Raza Haider, chief product officer, Bose. “We set out to completely reimagine the future of wearable audio and deliver a better, more beautiful, and comfortable solution to provide the best of both worlds. The Bose Ultra Open Earbuds do just that. Now you can enjoy your music and life, all at the same time.”

Designing the Future of Wearable Audio
The Bose Ultra Open Earbuds were made to be worn throughout the day. They don’t block your ears so you can hear and remain open to what’s going on around you — all while enjoying a soundtrack for your life. Listen to a podcast as you’re walking the dog and want to hear that bicycle about to pass, hear your number called at the deli while watching a video in line, or play your favorite workout music in the background while still catching up with your friend on a run.

The buds feature a stunning design with polished, soft edges and a brushed metallic finish to make them appear more like a fashion accessory than a traditional audio wearable. And, because they attach to the side of your ear, you can wear them with glasses, a hat, or jewelry and they won’t interfere. They were also engineered for comfort and stability — a special flex arm coated in super-soft silicone connects the speaker to the battery barrel, so it rests gently on your skin for hours, while providing a light-as-air grip to keep the earbuds secure on almost any ear.

Bose OpenAudio & Bose Immersive Audio
The Ultra Open Earbuds provide high-quality audio using Bose proprietary OpenAudio technology. This feat of engineering combines a powerful transducer with a tightly controlled acoustic structure to precisely deliver clear sound to your ear with almost no sound leaks to the world around you — so only you can hear and feel every beat of your music.

Powered by proprietary Bose digital signal processing software and an onboard IMU (Inertial Measurement Unit), Ultra Open Earbuds also feature Bose Immersive Audio to bring you closer than ever to your music, virtually seating you right in the acoustic sweet spot as if it were playing beyond your earbuds on a stage in front of you. Bose Immersive Audio’s wider, more spacious soundstage reveals your music’s true depth for a three-dimensional and layered listening experience that mimics the way we hear music in real life. And it works regardless of audio platform or device — making spatial audio accessible to all.

There are two options for listening to Bose Immersive Audio: “Still” or “Motion.” The “Still” mode is best when you’re not moving because the audio stays in place — perfect for when you’re sitting down and want to feel as if the sound is fixed in a specific position. “Motion” allows the audio to move with you, so it’s always out in front of you — great for staying immersed on the go.

Additional Details
The Bose Ultra Open Earbuds come in Black and White Smoke and feature an easy-to-use physical button on the top of the barrel that rests behind your ear, providing simple access to play, pause, skip, adjust volume, and more. They also include an option — available through the Bose Music app — to enable Auto Volume. This feature intelligently adjusts the volume of your audio based on the sound level of your surroundings, so your music stays at the right level as you move from place to place. And they’re built to last with an IPX4 rating for water and sweat resistance.

They provide up to 7.5 hours of battery life on a single charge when Bose Immersive Audio is turned off (up to 4.5 hours when Immersive Audio is turned on) or up to 48 hours of standby time so you can leave them on all day and stay connected even when you’re not using them. The charging case also provides up to 19.5 additional hours (or up to 12 hours of Immersive Audio), and the buds take one hour to fully charge while a 10-minute quick-charge provides two hours of playtime.

The earbuds feature Snapdragon Sound™ Technology Suite, including the latest Qualcomm® aptX™ Adaptive codec for audio streaming — for lossless and low latency capabilities — and providing more seamless, robust connectivity with premium Android devices. They also offer Google Fast Pair for added ease-of-use when pairing Android devices and are Bluetooth® 5.3 compatible.

Bose Ultra Open Earbuds also work with Bose SimpleSync technology, allowing you to pair them with select Bose smart soundbars and speakers for a personal listening experience. Independent volume controls allow you to lower or mute the soundbar while keeping the earbuds as loud as necessary.

Career-Spanning Exhibit On The Pogues To Make U.S. Debut With Exclusive Showing At The Bob Dylan Center In Tulsa

0

A career-spanning exhibition on Irish punk legends The Pogues will make its United States premiere with an exclusive showing at the Bob Dylan Center beginning March 8. They Gave The Walls A Talking: The Extraordinary Story of The Pogues and Shane MacGowan will mark the center’s first special exhibit to focus on a musical artist other than Bob Dylan. Ticket information is available at bobdylancenter.com.

The exhibit was curated by Niall Stokes, leading Irish music writer and editor of the influential Hot Press magazine. It features contributions from family members, band members and more, including Victoria Mary Clarke, Siobhan MacGowan, Jem Finer, Nick Cave, Imelda May, Glen Hansard, producer Steve Lillywhite and the family of the late Frank Murray, the band’s original manager.

Exclusive to the Tulsa run, the exhibit will include rare material selected by MacGowan’s wife Victoria Mary Clarke. Taken from the The Eternal Buzz and the Crock of Gold, the selections include never-before-seen or published illustrations, drawings, lyrics, stories and snippets dating back to his childhood, and journeying through six decades of punk and Irish revelry.

They Gave The Walls A Talking opened in December 2023 at EPIC The Irish Emigration Museum, in Dublin, Ireland, shortly after the death of Pogues co-founder, primary songwriter and frontman Shane MacGowan. Head of Exhibitions and Programs at EPIC Nathan Mannion commented, “We take immense pride in highlighting the stories and accomplishments of Irish emigrants, demonstrating that Irish identity transcends the geographical boundaries of our island. With that in mind, we commissioned this special exhibition to celebrate one of the greatest transnational Irish bands of all time.”

The President of Ireland, Michael D. Higgins, who was among the mourners at MacGowan’s funeral, expressed his support for the launch of the exhibition at The Bob Dylan Center. “Shane MacGowan was one of the greatest ever Irish songwriters,” President Higgins said. “I was honored to present him with a Lifetime Achievement Award in Dublin’s National Concert Hall in January 2018. The resonance of Shane’s words was reflected in the extraordinary outpouring of warmth which followed his death last November. One of the hallmarks of Shane’s writing was his intrinsic understanding of the vital importance of bringing a poetic sensibility to those wonderful, evocative songs of his. These are qualities that he shared with Bob Dylan, whose exceptional body of work rightly saw him being awarded the Nobel Prize in Literature in 2016.”

The VIP members-only opening event on March 7 will feature Clarke and Stokes in conversation with author and editor Anne Margaret Daniel.

On March 8, Clarke will appear at a special public screening of Crock of Gold: A Few Rounds with Shane MacGowan, the 2020 documentary directed by Julien Temple and produced by Johnny Depp. The film will be shown Tulsa’s Circle Cinema. Ticket information will be available soon.

The Pogues combined rowdy punk rock with traditional Irish music to create some of the most dynamic and memorable songs of the 1980s and ’90s. Their best-known song in the U.S. is the Christmas ballad “Fairytale of New York.” Other Pogues classics include “The Sick Bed of Cuchulainn,” “A Pair of Brown Eyes,” “Rainy Night in Soho,” “If I Should Fall from Grace with God,” “Misty Morning, Albert Bridge” and the Ewan MacColl cover “Dirty Old Town.”

How Many Roads: Bob Dylan and His Changing Times, 1961-64, which had been planned for a February opening at the center, will now open on May 24 following the run of the Pogues exhibit. Details about special events and appearances related to the exhibit will be announced in the coming weeks.

Beyoncé, Pink, Meg White, Joan Jett, Suzanne Vega To Be Featured In The Rock & Roll Hall Of Fame’s Newest Exhibit: “Revolutiary Women In Music: Left Of Center”

0

From Beyonce to Joan Jett, and Siouxsie Sioux to Queen Latifah, the matriarchs of music are set to take center stage at the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame’s newest exhibit “Revolutionary Women In Music: Left of Center,” set to open to the public on March 8th, 2024.

Spanning multiple genres, decades and generations, these musicians have challenged traditional gender roles; created inclusive, supportive communities that are respectful of women’s diverse experiences, identities, knowledge, and strengths; and empowered women to realize and embrace their authentic selves. The work of these women continues to not only tear down boundaries in the music industry but to shed light on social injustice throughout the world.

The exhibit, curated by the Hall’s VP of Curatorial Operations, Shelby Morrison, along with the Director of Curatorial Affairs, Amanda Pecsenye; which will be the first of its kind at the museum, will feature artifacts from the Rock Hall’s vault and never-before-seen items from the artists’ private collections including the entirety of Natalie Merchant’s “Ophelia” video costumes; Christina Aguilera’s tour wardrobe from her “Stripped” world tour’s “Beautiful” performance; along with pieces from Liz Phair, Queen Latifah, Anni Defranco, Sleater-Kinney, and many more.

“As the saying goes, well-behaved women rarely make history – and revolutionary women have often used music and lyrics to take action, convey truth, and call for change,” said Morrison. “For generations, women have fought against socially constructed gender norms to obtain equal social, political, and economic freedoms, and this exhibit, which has been decades in the making, will tell this story in a way that has never been done before.”

“Revolutionary Women In Music: Left of Center,” will fully open to the public on March 8th, 2024, with a Rock Hall Night’s special event dedication taking place the night before on March 7th, from 6pm – 10pm that will feature live performances from some of the women featured in the exhibit including Rock & Roll Hall of Fame Inductees, and other special guests such as Lisa Loeb and Shirley Manson of Garbage; along with trivia, a DJ and much more. You can find more information about this event at: https://www.rockhall.com/events/Revolutionary-Women-in-Music-rock-hall-nights
