First “Blush” Of Spring: Neo-Goth Rockers VAZUM Welcome The Coming Thaw

0

A Detroit deathgaze duo are the last folks you’d expect to suffer from Seasonal Affective Disorder, but Vazum wants to make it clear winter can be a bummer for anybody. Their new single, “Blush,” is a hopeful and timely reminder that milder days lie ahead – a message to cling to, whether your personal tastes normally run toward daffodils or funeral lilies.

Appropriately enough, it all came out of their love of gardening. Last year, musical partners Zach Pilska (vocals, guitar and drums) and Emily Sturm (vocals, bass and synyhesizers) bought a church in Jackson, Michigan, to serve as their living space and personal studio. One of the first things they did was to turn the parking lot out front into an oasis of native pollinators and flowers. Watching that garden flourish as spring turned to summer planted the literal seed of a new song: a hymn of renewal to be repeated like an affirmation in times when all seems frozen and hopeless.

“Every Winter is a struggle to survive the cold, dark, bleak days and nights,” the band says. “Seasonal depression hits us all in different ways. We look forward to the Spring with much excitement, as the sun breathes new life to the flowers and trees.”

The song renders that phenomenon as a neatly repeating two-act drama. Over a driving beat and some angular, ominously chiming guitar, Sturm’s vocal places us in the middle of a winter “so cold and bitter” that its virtues are hard to spot:

Maybe it looks nice on paper
We’re always falling down

The chords and melody turn brighter, though, for the wholly redemptive chorus:

Sunny days coming soon
For your lover
Mellow, softly
Lifting you up

And so it goes, back and forth and on again and off again, for five reassuring minutes that embody the eternal process of quietus and rebirth.

It’s uplifting stuff indeed for an act that traditionally trades in deathgaze – a hybrid of deathrock, post-punk and shoegaze. The accompanying music video is a study in contrasts too, transitioning from foreboding shots of wintry skies to images of wildflowers filmed in that Jackson garden and projected onto the band members’ bodies as they play. The duo have even departed from their traditional jet-black duds, donning cheerier metallic and iridescent costumes for “a glimmer of hope.”

Vazum has seen plenty of seasons pass since Pilska began recording and performing under that name in 2017. He released three albums before meeting Sturm; as a duo, they’ve generated multiple singles, an EP and four albums, including last year’s V-, a compilation of re-recorded greatest hits. With “Blush” out January 5, they’re about to embark on a tour of the Southern U.S. Spring, as they say, has sprung.

Scotty McCreery Announces Upcoming ‘Cab In A Solo Tour’

0

With another recent RIAA certification under his belt, the most first-week adds at country radio (120) of his career for latest single “Cab in a Solo,” and on the heels of celebrating a milestone 30th birthday yesterday, Triple Tigers recording artist Scotty McCreery is ready to kick 2024 off with a bang.

Having spent almost half his life in the spotlight making country music, the North Carolina native continues to push himself creatively as well as personally and is set to launch the next chapter in his career with his headlining Cab in a Solo Tour. Named after his current single of the same name, McCreery will be joined by Anne Wilson as direct support as well as Greylan James and Noah Hicks on select dates. The tour, produced by Live Nation, will kick-off at Hobart Arena in Troy, OH on Jan. 26, 2024, and trek across the U.S. with stops in Atlanta, Philadelphia, Boston and more.

“I’m on the road year ‘round, but I always love putting together specific tours and I think next year’s Cab in a Solo Touris gonna be one of my favorites,” said McCreery. “Happy to have Anne Wilson join us on the road – she’s a great singer. Depending on the city, either Greylan James or Noah Hicks will be opening up the show and they’re both fantastic performers. And who knows, maybe I’ll share a few songs from my upcoming new album! I’m looking forward to it!”

Written by McCreery, Frank Rogers and Brent Anderson and produced by Rogers, Derek Wells, and Aaron Eshuis, “Cab in a Solo” offers the first taste of new music from McCreery since the release of his 2021 album Same Truck. Stream “Cab in a Solo” HERE.

Upon its release, Taste of Country declared “McCreery’s country roots shine.” With a hint of neotraditional country and dash of 90’s country nostalgia, the heartbreak track finds the happily married father in unfamiliar territory – lamenting a failed relationship.

“Cab in a Solo” follows the recent success of “It Matters to Her” the fastest climbing single of McCreery’s career. The singer/songwriter has earned five consecutive No. 1 hits in the last few years including RIAA Platinum-certified No. 1 “Damn Strait” and RIAA Gold-certified No. 1 “You Time,” all found on Same Truck: The Deluxe Album.

Earlier this summer McCreery joined the Brooks & Dunn REBOOT Tour 2023. He is currently out on the road for his own headlining tour with 25+ dates through the fall.

Mahalia Announces 2024 North America Leg Of The ‘In Real Life’ Tour

0

Following her UK and EU run this October and November, British musician Mahalia announced today her massive In Real Life Tour will continue to North America this February and March 2024. Produced by Live Nation, the 25-date run kicks off on February 20 at The Commodore Ballroom in Vancouver, BC and makes stops across North America in Los Angeles, CA; Atlanta, GA; New York, NY; Toronto, ON and more before wrapping up in Chicago, IL at House of Blues on March 26. The second leg will see Mahalia perform her highly anticipated second studio album IRL for the first time live in North America.

IRL is a record that speaks to the musical and emotional era of where Mahalia is now, and how she got here. The BRIT and GRAMMY nominated artist has delivered a beautiful classic; effortlessly condensing any number of disparate styles and genres into music that thrillingly broaches any gap between Pop, Soul, and R&B. The album also includes hit singles “Terms & Conditions,” “Ready,” and “Cheat” featuring pop powerhouse JoJo. An array of incredible musicians are also scattered throughout the record, including vocal appearances from the likes of Stormzy, Joyce Wrice, Destin Conrad, Kojey Radical, and more. Emboldened by her inflections, insights, and young adulthood, Mahalia is not only breaking the mold on her second album but determined to live life cognizantly and share that experience with her fans on tour.

The last few years have marked many achievements for the Leicester-born star. Beginning 2020 with her second BRIT nomination, Mahalia featured on up-and-coming fellow Midlands rapper Pa Salieu’s debut mixtape, ‘Send Them To Coventry’, whilst also gracing the track list of Headie One’s #1 album ‘Edna’. Subsequently, Mahalia also received a GRAMMY nomination for ‘All I Need’ – Jacob Collier’s single of which she features alongside US rapper, Ty Dolla $ign. Shortly after, Mahalia concluded the year with three MOBO nominations for ‘Best Female Act’, ‘Best R&B/Soul Act’ and ‘Album Of The Year’ for her debut album, ‘Love and Compromise’, winning in the first two categories. In 2021, Mahalia was also nominated for her first ever Ivor Novello award for her 2020 collaboration with UK lyricist Pa Salieu for his single ‘Energy’ and subsequently concluded the year with an incredible headline show at London’s prestigious venue, O2 Brixton Academy. Adding to her long list of achievements Mahalia opened for Adele at her 2022 BST shows in Hyde Park last Summer whilst also joining Alicia Keys during her o2 Arena shows in London – she then concluded the year on a high, winning her third MOBO Award for Best R&B/Soul Act.

Besides the awards and nominations, it’s also been a time of deep personal growth, one that Mahalia describes as a real rollercoaster in her personal and professional life. Reflection has been the thread running through Mahalia’s writing and the singer hopes that her music will encourage her listeners to carve out time to also look back and re-evaluate: “We’re all fixated on how we can make ourselves better but I want people to also reminisce on lovely or painful situations they’ve lived through and how they’ve helped shape the people they are now.”

Montreal Jazz Pianist Simon Denizart Reflects On His Personal Journey With “35 Years Of Mistakes”

0

Montreal-via-France jazz pianist and composer Simon Denizart unveils a reflective new song “35 Years of Mistakes,” out now on Nettwerk / Justin Time Records. The tender piano ballad is enveloped in a flourish of melancholic string arrangements as Denizart grapples with his up and down journey as an artist.

“35 Years of Mistakes tells the story of an existence made up of ups and downs, unfortunate choices and moments of grace. It’s an emotional musical journey that invites listeners to reflect on the power of resilience, the beauty of imperfection and the strength of perseverance,” explains Denizart.

“35 Years of Mistakes” follows the frenetic “Music Box” and lively “9-4,” (All About Jazz Song of the Day) signaling more new music from the jazz piano virtuoso.

Originally from Créteil, France, jazz pianist and composer Simon Denizart now calls Montréal, Québec Canada home. He arrived in 2011 and quickly made a name for himself as one of the city’s top players. With a nod to world music, his style and repertoire can be soft, sensitive and energizing with subtle and accessible melodies. His first three releases (labels 270 Sessions and Laborie Jazz) were all nominated for ADISQ Awards (Québec Grammy®) in the Album of the Year category, jazz. Selected for the 2014 Rimouski Festival’s next generation competition, he won the audience prize which enabled him to travel and perform throughout Québec. He received significant praise and recognition from CBC/SRC having been chosen as one of their rising stars with the Radio Canada Revelation Award which highlights and encourages the next generation of emerging artists.

Recently signed to Justin Time Records world wide – Simon’s next venture proves to be his most innovative yet with influences borrowed from jazz, classical and electronic music. Always sensitive to developing new sounds and sonorities with the piano, Simon offers solid melodic and rhythmic playing.

Simon tours frequently and has performed in Germany, the Czech Republic, Poland and his native country France. Stay tuned for more music and tour dates in 2024…
