The Polygon Gallery Presents The Landmark Exhibition ‘Velvet Terrorism: Pussy Riot’s Russia’

0

The Polygon Gallery is pleased to present Velvet Terrorism: Pussy Riot’s Russia, a survey exhibition of the feminist art collective, from March 22–June 2, 2024. Drawing from more than a decade of activism, the show features documentation of Pussy Riot’s actions as assembled by member Maria Alyokhina.

“This exhibition highlights Pussy Riot’s courageous spirit and tenacious advocacy of human rights, while offering a graphic narrative about Russia’s recent history,” says Reid Shier, director of The Polygon Gallery. “Pussy Riot’s international impact has been growing since they performed in Moscow’s Cathedral of Christ the Saviour in 2012, and the survey demonstrates the urgent relevance of their activism, particularly as they raise awareness about the war in Ukraine — which has now been waged for close to two years.”

Pussy Riot is a protest and performance art collective that produces provocative and politically engaged performances, music, and videos. Formed in Moscow in 2011, the group has become an iconic symbol of opposition against Vladimir Putin’s Russia. The collective has received the LennonOno Grant for Peace in 2012, the Hannah Arendt Prize for Political Thought in 2014, and, most recently, the Woody Guthrie Award in 2023, which recognizes the spirit of resistance through music, literature, dance, or other forms of art.

Through videos, photographs, testimonies, song lyrics, and reflections, the exhibition offers a rich account of Pussy Riot’s non-violent actions as well as the reactions of the Russian authorities. Through their work over the years, Pussy Riot has transformed the repressive apparatus of an authoritarian state into a creative partner, boldly playing with fire.

In addition to the exhibition, Pussy Riot will stage a performance of RIOT DAYS in Vancouver on March 22 at The Pearl. The concert, based on Alyokhina’s memoir of the same name, combines music, theatre, and political action. The award-winning show has been performed more than 200 times worldwide.

Velvet Terrorism: Pussy Riot’s Russia was originally presented at Kling & Bang (Reykjavik). Created by Maria Alyokhina and curated with Ragnar Kjartansson and Ingibjörg Sigurjónsdóttir, the exhibition has been shown at the Louisiana Museum of Modern Art, Denmark and the Musée d’art contemporain de Montréal.

Sister Rosetta Tharpe’s “Live In France: The 1966 Concert In Limoges” Set For Record Store Day Release

0

Sister Rosetta Tharpe was a pivotal figure in American 20th century music, though until recently her legend had languished in semi-obscurity. The pioneering gospel/blues singer, extraordinarily gifted electric guitarist and proto rock ‘n’ roll star has been rediscovered of late with a well-deserved induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2018 with Alabama Shakes’ Brittany Howard doing the honors. Thereafter, her influence at the dawn of the rock era on none other than Elvis Presley was acknowledged with a searing portrayal by Yola in Baz Luhrmann’s 2022 Elvis feature film. All of that posthumous notoriety has earned her the title “The Godmother of Rock ‘n’ Roll,” with her undeniable influence acknowledged by rock cognoscenti everywhere.

This coming Record Store Day, April 20, will see the release of a limited edition 2-LP set (also available on CD and digital download on April 26) titled Live in France: The 1966 Concert in Limoges, a 21-track album of newly discovered and previously unreleased performances recorded on November 11, 1966, at the Grand Theater in Limoges, the city in west-central France best known for porcelain production.

Having been accepted and celebrated by audiences in France and throughout Europe, she toured the continent relentlessly in the ‘60s. Her 1966 performance in Limoges was in fact her third concert there over the years. It was captured on tape that night by the Office de Radiodiffusion-Télévision Française (ORTF) and discovered seven years ago by Zev Feldman, the archivist Stereophile dubbed “The Indiana Jones of Jazz,” and who was recently profiled in The New Yorker, for his uncanny ability to uncover heretofore “lost” music recorded decades ago by seminal and critically acclaimed artists. Feldman found the Limoges recording while doing a search of the INA (Institut national de l’audiovisuel) France archives and realized he had discovered something very special: an audio document of the formidable American gospel great playing solo, accompanying herself on her electric guitar. Feldman commented, “Sister Rosetta Tharpe has been a towering and trailblazing figure in music even decades and decades after her passing in 1973, and her influence is still being felt to this day. This recording has never been released before and I consider it a very special time capsule of a document that transports you back to a wonderful performance in the mid-1960s in France.”

Feldman worked tirelessly to put the music he’d discovered in a setting befitting the brilliance of the artist and the significance of his find. To that end, Live in France is offered in a lavishly packaged set with rare photos, meticulous art direction and voluminous liner notes by Tharpe experts as well as commentary from contemporary musicians who are in awe of Tharpe, her talent and ongoing legacy. The album is being released on Feldman’s new imprint Deep Digs, in partnership with Elemental Music.

The set features a lengthy essay by Tharpe biographer Gayle Wald, author of Shout, Sister Shout!: The Untold Story of Rock-and-Roll Trailblazer Sister Rosetta Tharpe. Wald wrote, “Sister Rosetta was the first guitar heroine of rock & roll. Her heartfelt gospel folksiness gave way to her roaring mastery of her trusty Gibson Les Paul Custom, which she wielded on a level that rivaled the best of her male contemporaries.” Also included are descriptive notes, translated from French by Jean Buzelin, author of Sister Rosetta Tharpe: La femme qui inventa le Rock ‘n’ Roll. He chronicles her exhaustive touring in Europe and her special relationship with French audiences. Her influence on British guitar players including Keith Richards, Jeff Beck and Eric Clapton is widely acknowledged with all the overmentioned having seen her perform when she toured with Muddy Waters and other American blues greats. There is also a heartwarming narrative by Donna Rhea Hamilton (grandmother of Tedeschi Trucks Band drummer Isaac Eady), at whose childhood home in Tullahoma, TN Tharpe was a house guest when she came to town – by Greyhound Bus – to perform at the AME Church there in the late ‘60s. She recalls Sister Rosetta as a “sweet, sweet soul, down to earth just like normal people,” and helping her mother cook for the family.

Beyond those exhaustive notes are comments from Susan Tedeschi, ZZ Top’s Billy F Gibbons, Shemekia Copeland, Henry Rollins, Brian Ray and Bonnie Raitt who wrote, “Rosetta was one of the most beloved and influential artists ever in gospel music…and she blazed a trail for the rest of us women guitarists with her indomitable spirit and accomplished, engaging style. She has long been deserving of wider recognition and a place of honor in the field of music history.” Susan Tedeschi also offered, “I don’t know of anybody really who plays exactly like she does, but I can hear her influence in people from Little Richard to Elvis Presley, to Clapton, to Johnny Cash, Jerry Lee Lewis, a lot of different people. You can hear her in their playing, so when you hear that rock and roll thing, it really kind of comes from her.” Billy F Gibbons commented, “As a guitarist I have to celebrate her six-string slingin’ . . . nobody had done anything like that before and is due a debt of gratitude for being the soulful pioneer she was.” Shemekia Copeland commented, “If Rosetta had been a Mister instead of a Sister, she would have been as famous as Little Richard, Chuck Berry or even Elvis. In fact, she inspired all of them. She was that original. And she’s an inspiration to me every time I perform. Sister Rosetta rocked!!!!” That assertion was seconded by Henry Rollins who stated, “Sister Rosetta rocks absolutely.”

ABBA Set To Reissue ‘Waterloo’ For 50th Anniversary

0

My, my! Fifty years after ABBA’s international breakthrough with “Waterloo” in the Eurovision Song Contest, Polar Music International celebrates this milestone. When Agnetha Fältskog, Björn Ulvaeus, Benny Andersson and Anni-Frid “Frida” Lyngstad entered the already colourful stage at The Dome in Brighton, England on April 6, 1974, dressed in shiny glam-rock costumes typical of the era, the world of pop changed forever.

The Waterloo album is now reissued as a Half-Speed mastered 45RPM 2LP Vinyl, along with a limited edition box set of the three vinyl singles originally released by Polar in 1974; the singles are also available as separate picture discs. To top it all off, there is a unique 10-inch vinyl disc featuring “Waterloo” in four different languages and a new line of anniversary apparel taking it back to the 70’s. Pre-order it HERE.

Waterloo, ABBA’s second album, was first released in Sweden in March 1974. It was an enormous success: up to that point, no other album had sold as many copies in the group’s home country. And no wonder, as Björn and Benny had written, arranged and produced a string of great songs, most of them graced by the compelling lead vocals of Agnetha and Frida. The Waterloo album offers many riches beyond the title track. There is the breezy “Honey, Honey”, a highly familiar tune in the 21st century through its inclusion in the Mamma Mia! musical; “Hasta Mañana”, a tear-drenched ballad that almost became ABBA’s Eurovision entry; the early 1960s pop of “Dance (While The Music Still Goes On)” – and much more.

Dr. Dre And Snoop Dogg Launch Ready To Drink Gin & Juice By Dre And Snoop

0

Musical and cultural icons Dr. Dre and Snoop Dogg kicked off the rollout of Gin & Juice By Dre and Snoop, the first ready to drink product from their new premium spirits company, with a surprise performance at the Super Bowl afterparty last night in Las Vegas.

Three decades after “Gin & Juice” left an indelible mark on popular culture and helped establish Dre and Snoop as groundbreaking hip-hop superstars, the pair are now known as much for their wide-ranging entrepreneurial ventures as for their game-changing music. With their premium beverage Gin & Juice By Dre and Snoop, they’re taking over some new territory — the spirits industry.

Celebrating the 30th anniversary of Snoop’s classic debut album, Doggystyle, produced by Dr. Dre, the canned beverage is named, of course, for Snoop’s beloved, Grammy-nominated 1994 classic song “Gin & Juice,” and comes in four flavors: Citrus, Melon, Passionfruit, and Apricot. The canned cocktails are premium gin-based cocktails, crafted for an innovative experience with packaging designed by Ini Archibong. Product will be rolling out domestically throughout the US now through early spring. More offerings from the brand will be announced in the future.

“Together, we always try to create magic, we’re having fun being creative, and everything about this product is really us,” says Dr. Dre. “There’s passion behind it, and friendship and love and a culture. We’re shooting to make everything we do magnificent, and fortunately, most of the time we hit the target.” “Look where we’re at in our careers,” says Snoop Dogg. “Look at our age and look at what we’ve done, and we still love each other, so why not do something together? A lot of times people have been in a relationship for thirty years and can’t talk to each other, can’t hang out, so it’s just fun to be in a partnership with people that you actually love.”

Gin & Juice By Dre and Snoop will be distributed nationally through Southern Glazer’s Wine and Spirits, the largest beverage distributor in the U.S. The spirit company will be led by Patrick Halbert, Andrew Gill andRocco Milano, the founders from On The Rocks Cocktails. In addition to Dr. Dre and Snoop Dogg, investors include Jimmy Iovine, Main Street Advisors, Marc Rowan and Tom Werner.

Pearl Jam Announce New Album, Dark Matter, Out April 19, 2024 And World Tour

0

Pearl Jam will release their twelfth studio album, Dark Matter, on Monkeywrench Records/Republic Records/Universal Music Canada on April 19, 2024 and launch a 35-date worldwide tour this May. The album’s title track is available now HERE. Produced by multi-GRAMMY award winning producer Andrew Watt, Dark Matter, marks the band’s first release since critically acclaimed Gigaton (2020).

Dark Matter is now available for pre-order HERE.

In 2023, the members of Pearl Jam—Eddie Vedder [vocals], Jeff Ament [bass], Stone Gossard [rhythm guitar], Mike McCready [lead guitar], and Matt Cameron [drums]—retreated to Shangri-La Studios in Malibu where they simply plugged in and played with producer Andrew Watt at the helm.

The musicians faced one another in the same space and communicated sonically at the highest level. Writing and recording in a burst of inspiration, Dark Matter was born in just three weeks.

As a result, Dark Matter channels the shared spirit of a group of lifelong creative confidants and brothers in one room playing as if their very lives depended on it. All of the blood, sweat, tears, and energy of a storied career felt renewed and poured into this one body of work.

The band members personally previewed the record with a listening party at the iconic Troubadour in West Hollywood during GRAMMY week:

Vedder said: “I’m getting chills, because I have good memories. We’re still looking for ways to communicate. We’re at this time in our lives when you could do it or you could not do it, but we still care about putting something out there that is meaningful and we hopefully think is our best work. No hyperbole, I think this is our best work.”

Ament added, “What Ed said about getting us in a room at this point, we felt like we were about to make a really important record. A lot of that had to do with the atmosphere Andrew set up. He has encyclopedic knowledge of our history, not only as a band and how we wrote songs, but as players. He could pinpoint things we did on old songs to the point where I was like, ‘What the fuck is he talking about?’ His excitement was contagious. He’s a force. I just want to say thanks for keeping us on track. I couldn’t be prouder of us as a band. I feel so grateful for the fans, but mostly for my brothers and these people I’ve made music with.”

The band is celebrating indie record stores with the release of a special edition of Dark Matter on April 20. Only at participating stores as part of Record Store Day. Get more information and find stores at www.recordstoreday.com

Dark Matter album packaging features light painting art by Alexandr Gnezdilov. Light painting is an artistic form of photography where images are created by adjusting a camera’s exposure for an extended period and using a light source, such as a flashlight, to “paint” in the dark. The album cover art was crafted using a large self-made kaleidoscope. Each letter visible on the cover was individually captured and handwritten midair with a specially designed flashlight to create the pearlescent effect. See more info on Alexandr Gnezdilov below.

Pearl Jam is an alternative rock band formed in Seattle, Washington in 1990. The band’s lineup consists of bassist Jeff Ament, rhythm guitarist Stone Gossard, lead guitarist Mike McCready, lead singer/guitarist Eddie Vedder and drummer Matt Cameron. Thirty plus years of live performances, twelve studio albums and hundreds of official live concert bootleg releases later, Pearl Jam continues to be critically acclaimed and commercially successful. The band has sold over 85 million albums worldwide and was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2017.   Since the earliest days, Pearl Jam has used its platform to elevate people and causes that often go unnoticed or underserved. Much of the band’s philanthropic work is accomplished through its Vitalogy Foundation which to date has raised more than $50 million for organizations supporting issues such as abortion access, climate change and homelessness, and drawing attention to the fight against diseases such as Crohn’s and ulcerative colitis and epidermolysis bullosa (EB). In addition to the money Vitalogy donates, the band also donates signed instruments, posters and merchandise to organizations to use for their own fundraising purposes. Compounding the impact of Vitalogy Foundation, the band has supported Jeff Ament’s Montana Pool Service building skate parks in Montana and South Dakota. Pearl Jam also lends its voice to notable causes like the West Memphis 3, voting rights and fair ticketing practices. Over the past three decades, the band has a long history of standing up for what it believes in and putting its resources behind those beliefs.   Through its innovative Ten Club and fan engagement, community building, coveted poster designs, and longstanding activism and philanthropy, Pearl Jam continues to have a lasting impact on generations of music lovers.

The name Andrew Watt in recent years has become synonymous with one very true phrase: the music industry’s not-so-secret weapon. Since 2015, the multi-GRAMMY-winning and platinum-selling music producer has been a hit-making machine, having collaborated with some of the last decade’s most exciting, and ground-breaking artists, including including Justin Bieber, Ozzy Osbourne, Cardi B., Post Malone, Dua Lipa, Metallica, Stevie Wonder, Miley Cyrus, Bruno Mars, Shawn Mendes, Elton John, Lana Del Rey, Mick Jagger, Brandi Carlile, Paul McCartney, Smokey Robinson and Lady Gaga, to name a few.   In 2021, Watt took home his first GRAMMY Award for “Producer of the Year” at the 63rd annual GRAMMY Awards for his work on Ozzy Osbourne’s Ordinary Man, Miley Cyrus’ Plastic Hearts, both of which he executive-produced, Dua Lipa’s Future Nostalgia, which took home the GRAMMY that year for Best Pop Vocal Album, and Post Malone’s Hollywood’s Bleeding, which was nominated for Album of the Year. The following year saw Watt produce the widely publicized and critically acclaimed Elton John and Britney Spears collaboration “Hold Me Closer,” the entirety of Eddie Vedder’s solo release Earthling, and Ozzy Osbourne’s GRAMMY Award winning Patient Number 9, which earned Watt his second GRAMMY win for “Best Metal Album” at the 65th GRAMMY Awards. 2023 was also a stellar year for Watt, kicking off the top of the year with the release of Iggy Pop’s long-awaited 19th studio album, Every Loser, released via an exclusive partnership between Atlantic Records and Watt’s own Gold Tooth Records. This past summer also saw a slew of high profile and record-breaking releases on which Watt is credited as co-writer and co-producer, including; The Kid LAROI’s single “Forever and Again” which was released as part of the Barbiemovie soundtrack, and Jungkook’s “Seven,” which debuted at #1 on Billboard’s Hot 100 chart and amassed a record-breaking 217.1 million streams and 269,000 downloads in just its first week of release. Watt ended the year with the release of “Hackney Diamonds,” The Rolling Stones’ first album of original music in 18 years, which was fully produced by Watt. The album’s lead single “Angry” earned Watt a GRAMMY Nomination for “Best Rock Song” for his work co-writing and producing the track.

Alexandr Gnezdilov created the light photography art for the cover of Pearl Jam’s Dark Matter single and album along with the featured lettering. His work is also utilized throughout the Dark Mattercampaign. His interest in photography began at an early age in Moldova where he spent his childhood before expanding to explore long exposure and light painting techniques after moving to Germany in 2001.   Alexandr created the cover of Dark Matter using a large self made kaleidoscope with each letter visible on the cover individually captured, handwritten midair with a specially designed flashlight to create the pearlescent effect. His artwork has been featured in multiple exhibitions including collaborations with the State Theatre of Nuremberg and has been licensed for the past decade for articles, news and commercials.   Gnezdilov lives in Nuremberg, Germany with his wife and two sons and works primarily as a software engineer. When not working, Alexandr’s other passions include music and he recently released his debut album Space Wire with his band “Pulsar Clock.”

‘Runaway Radio’ Documentary Chronicles the Rise and Fall of Houston’s Iconic 101 KLOL Station

0

Here’s the cool Runaway Radio trailer for the documentary from director Mike McGuff. The film will be available on DVD and through video-on-demand platforms on Tuesday, February 27, 2024.

In the pre-digital age, radio entertained, informed and dictated what was cool through theater of the mind. Acclaimed musicians such as Lyle Lovett, ZZ Top’s Dusty Hill, Melissa Etheridge and Sammy Hagar along with top radio DJs from across the US reflect on how the medium changed their lives and the lives of devoted listeners. Runaway Radio focuses on Houston’s 101 KLOL – starting in 1970 as a progressive radio station, where DJs played whatever they wanted, to how it evolved into one of several wild Album Oriented Rock (AOR) stations across the country, where on air personalities were sometimes bigger than the music itself! But in the end, changes and pressures from Washington, the music industry and Silicon Valley led to the station’s, and much of the format’s, demise in the 2000s.
