Belanova Is Back! Get Ready To Color Your Life With The “Vida En Rosa Tour”!

0

Belanova is back in the U.S., celebrating the milestone of their 24th Anniversary. Produced by Live Nation and Frias Entertainment, the 12-city tour kicks off on April 24 at San Jose Civic in San Jose, CA making stops across North America in Chicago, Phoenix, Miami and more before wrapping up in Houston at Smart Financial Center at Sugar Land on June 23.

The band stormed onto the Mexican pop scene in the 2000s, captivating audiences with Denisse Guerrero’s smooth vocals, and the synth-pop melodies created by Edgar Huerta on keyboards, and Ricardo “Richie” Arreola on bass and guitar. Their unique blend of electropop, sprinkled with anime and nightclub influences, led to chart-topping hits like “Rosa Pastel” and “Por Ti”. With multiple Latin Grammy nominations and a dedicated fanbase, Belanova became one of Mexico’s most successful pop acts, leaving a lasting electro-pop imprint on the Latin music landscape.

Belanova’s influence extended far beyond music. They were trendsetters, pushing boundaries in fashion and challenging societal norms. They challenged traditional gender norms in both their music and fashion. Denisse often rocked pantsuits, crop tops, and androgynous haircuts, while Richie frequently sported eyeliner and flamboyant accessories. This fluidity and confidence in their self-expression resonated with fans who embraced a more inclusive and diverse approach to fashion.

Belanova’s international success, particularly in the US and Europe, helped to break down barriers and bring Latin pop music to a wider audience. Their music and image continue to inspire and resonate with fans, solidifying their place as pop culture icons in Mexico and beyond. They became ambassadors for Mexican music and culture, inspiring a new generation of artists and fans.

Diane Warren To Receive Prestigious Johnny Mercer Award

0

The Songwriters Hall of Fame announced today that Diane Warren will be the 2024 recipient of the esteemed Johnny Mercer Award at the Songwriters Hall of Fame Induction and Awards Gala slated for Thursday, June 13, 2024, at the Marriott Marquis Hotel in New York City.

The Johnny Mercer Award, the highest honor bestowed by the Songwriters Hall of Fame, is exclusively reserved for a songwriter or songwriting team who has already been inducted in a prior year and whose body of work is of such high quality and impact that it upholds the gold standard set by the legendary Johnny Mercer. Diane Warren was inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame in 2001.

SHOF Chairman Nile Rodgers said, “The songwriting community is filled with many special people who have delivered incomparable songs that have made the world go round. Within that special group of people, Diane Warren is unique; she is a force of nature that, despite her enormous success from “Rhythm Of The Night” to “I Don’t Want To Miss A Thing” and at least 100 (15!) Academy Award nominations, she shows up to write songs every morning at 8 am! I am delighted to see her receive the esteemed Johnny Mercer Award from the Songwriters Hall of Fame, which is the gold bar standard. Diane is that and more!”

Diane Warren said, “I’m beyond honored to receive the Johnny Mercer Award, especially looking at the names of the other songwriters who have gotten this great honor. When I was inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame, my mom was there and finally understood that I could make a living and life being what I was born to be and wake up every day loving to be… a songwriter. Now, both she and my dad will be looking down on me with big smiles on their faces. Thank you, Songwriters Hall of Fame.”

One of modern music’s most celebrated songwriters, Diane Warren, has penned nine #1 and thirty-three top 10 hits on the Billboard Hot 100 and is tied for having written the most #1 songs as a sole writer in Billboard history. Her distinguished catalogue features beloved songs including “Only Love Can Hurt Like This,” “Un-Break My Heart,” and “If I Could Turn Back Time.”

She has received 15 Academy Award nominations, is a GRAMMY winner with 15 nominations, an EMMY winner, and a two-time Golden Globe winner whose songs have been featured in more than 150 films, including chart-topping hits “Nothing’s Gonna Stop Us Now” (Mannequin, 1987) “Because You Loved Me” (Up Close and Personal, 1996) “How Do I Live” ( Con Air, 1997) “I Don’t Want To Miss A Thing” (Armageddon, 1998 ) and “Til It Happens To You” (The Hunting Ground, 2015). In November 2022, Warren became the first songwriter in history to receive an Honorary Oscar, as voted on by the Academy’s Board of Governors. Most recently, she wrote the original song “The Fire Inside,” performed by Becky G for the film Flamin’ Hot, directed by Eva Longoria, which marked her 15th Oscar nomination.

The sole owner of Realsongs, her publishing company and the most successful female-owned and operated business in the music industry, Diane Warren is a recipient of a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame, a nod to her legendary career, having worked with many of today’s most popular artists, including Beyonce, Lady Gaga, Taylor Swift, H.E.R., Snoop Dogg, Paloma Faith, Jon Batiste, Maren Morris, and Justin Bieber, in addition to having written songs for the world’s most iconic artist such as Whitney Houston, Cher, Celine Dion, Mariah Carey, Reba McEntire, and many more.

Inductees at this year’s event include Hillary Lindsey, Timothy Mosley p/k/a Timbaland, Dean Pitchford, Bill Berry, Peter Buck, Mike Mills, Michael Stipe p/k/a R.E.M., and Donald Fagen and Walter Becker p/k/a Steely Dan.

The Songwriters Hall of Fame celebrates songwriters, educates the public with regard to their achievements, and produces a spectrum of professional programs devoted to the development of new songwriting talent through workshops, showcases, scholarships and Master Sessions at NYU Steinhardt School of Culture, Education and Human Development, University of North Carolina and at Stuyvesant High School. West Coast educational activities are held at The GRAMMY Museum, which hosts the permanent Songwriters Hall of Fame Gallery, and at the University of Southern California. Out of the tens of thousands of songwriters of our era, there are approximately 400 inductees who make up the impressive roster enshrined in the Hall of Fame. A songwriter with a notable catalog of songs qualifies for induction 20 years after the first commercial release of a song. The list of inductees include Kenneth Gamble & Leon Huff, Barry Mann & Cynthia Weil, Jerry Leiber & Mike Stoller, Eddie Holland, Lamont Dozier & Brian Holland, Smokey Robinson, Paul Williams, Hal David & Burt Bacharach, Billy Steinberg & Tom Kelly, Bob Dylan, Isaac Hayes & David Porter, Carole King, Paul Simon, Billy Joel, Jon Bon Jovi & Richie Sambora, Elton John & Bernie Taupin, Brian Wilson, James Taylor, Don Schlitz, Bruce Springsteen, Phil Collins, Alan & Marilyn Bergman, Loretta Lynn, Jimmy Webb, Van Morrison, Kris Kristofferson, Dolly Parton, Garth Brooks, Diane Warren, Carole Bayer Sager, Stevie Wonder, Steven Tyler & Joe Perry, Mac Davis, Leonard Cohen, Ray Davies, Cyndi Lauper, Desmond Child, Mick Jones & Lou Gramm, Elvis Costello, Marvin Gaye, Nile Rodgers & Bernard Edwards, Lionel Richie, Bill Withers, Neil Diamond, Jay Z, Tom Petty, Toby Keith, Max Martin, Jimmy Jam & Terry Lewis, Berry Gordy, Kenneth “Babyface” Edmonds, Robert Lamm & James Pankow, Bill Anderson, Steve Dorff, Jermaine Dupri, Alan Jackson, Kool & The Gang, John Mellencamp and Allee Willis, Mariah Carey, Annie Lennox, Dave Stewart, Ernie Isley, Marvin Isley, O’Kelly Isley, Ronald Isley, Rudolph Isley, Chris Jasper, Steve Miller, Pharrell Williams, Chad Hugo, Rick Nowels, William “Mickey” Stevenson, among many others.

2x JUNO Award Winner Andy Milne Chronicles His Lifelong Efforts To Uncover His Birth Family History In New Album “Time Will Tell”

0

Time Will Tell, the upcoming album out April 26, 2024 from two-time JUNO Award winner Andy Milne lifelong efforts to uncover his birth family history. Adopted as an infant, his efforts to connect with his birth family proved fruitless – until 2018, when the gift of an Ancestry.com DNA test from his wife, singer La Tanya Hall, changed everything.

A DNA match led him to his first cousin, Marc, with whom he discovered he shared a mutual friend. Ironically, just as world events collided with the COVID-19 lockdowns, the profound mysteries of his biological family began to rapidly reveal themselves.

“In 2022, my voyage eventually received an unimaginable upgrade when I finally met my birth mother,” he recounts. “This recording reflects part of my expedition navigating the mixed emotions associated with this identity paradox. How we move through life, and the lives we will touch, is unknown to us, despite our best efforts to chart a path.”

While he says the new album shouldn’t be taken as a pound-for-pound musical account of these experiences, the journey inspired and informed his process.

“I realized my compositions were a subconscious reflection of my experience,” says Milne, who is also an assistant professor of music at the University of Michigan. “I met my birth mother days before I composed a lot of this music, and quickly recognized that this would be a significant throughline in those pieces. I essentially allowed it to flow and envelop my process.”

The notion of “family” extends to Milne’s artistic approach, in terms of his commitment to honoring relationships, building community and blending musical languages. This is heart-wrenchingly expressed in the track “Lost and Found.” It reveals his personal mission — both in title and his plaintive performance – and introduces a new texture to Unison’s soundscape in the koto of virtuoso Yoko Reikano Kimura. She can be heard on three other tracks on Time Will Tell.

Milne’s interest in Asian culture dates back to his student days, when he also became curious about Zen Buddhism. A decade ago, he fell in love with the string universe of the Japanese koto and created the multidisciplinary project Strings & Serpents, which featured a piano duo, a koto duo, and an animated film. This led to him inviting Kimura to join Unison for a gig.

“That set the wheels in motion,” he recalls. “I like the koto for its soulfulness and because it can express opposite and complementary sonic qualities to the piano. It’s quite flexible – it can be delicate but it can also be really ferocious. The similarities and differences between these two iconic string instruments really appeal to me.”

Also bringing considerable chops to four tracks is tenor saxophonist Ingrid Laubrock, with whom Milne recorded the 2022 album Fragile. Their interplay on opening track “Purity of Heart” lends a sense of urgency to the proceedings, and after their previous collaboration the ease of their give-and-take is apparent.

“Ingrid and I have known each other for years, and in 2012, we had a transformative experience training together at the Jazz Composers Orchestra Institute at UCLA,” Milne explains. “Then, during the pandemic, she reached out and invited me to make a duo recording. It was challenging, inspired, and a lot of fun, and we realized we had forged a very good musical connection.”

Echoing Milne’s winding personal journey, some tracks on Time Will Tell are journeys themselves, marked by dramatic shifts in tempo and tone. “Beyond the Porcelain Door” and “Kumoi Joshi” are striking examples.

“In traditional jazz song form it’s perhaps less common for compositions to express two tracks in one,” he explains. “With some of this music, when you hear the beginning of the track, you really can’t tell how it will end. On one level, I know I was reflecting and channeling the power of the unknown as it related to my journey connecting with my birth family. There is a certain amount of freedom that comes from being committed to yourself and your process that allows you to feel comfortable making these choices.

“Having been around the sun a few times and having composed a lot of music, I find it empowering to trust my instincts, be bold and move things around. It’s a spiritual expression of being in a place where this is not only permissible, but natural and organic.”

Milne continues to enjoy a strong sense of brotherhood with Hébert and Penn, who each contribute a composition to Time Will Tell. Penn wrote “Papounet” – the title being his children’s term of endearment for their grandfather – which features some of the trio’s most synchronous and adventurous playing. Meanwhile, Hébert provided “Broken Landscape,” which gives the bassist ample space to virtuosically explore color, soloing almost throughout against the backdrop of Penn’s evocative brush work.

“I’ve always felt a strong musical kinship with these guys,” Milne notes. “It was key that their voices as players and composers come through, expressing how the music could go in a way that it’s their vision as well. It’s important to me that even when our collective vision reaches across aesthetic boundaries, a framework exists that supports a cohesive coexistence of our voices and approaches – like family.”

Acclaimed Vocalist LIZZ WRIGHT Releases Career-Defining Studio Album “Shadow” On April 12, 2024

0

Acclaimed vocalist Lizz Wright embraces her newfound freedom with a classic recording that encapsulates an illustrious 20-year career since the release of her debut album, Salt (Verve, 2003). Wright’s studio debut on her label Blues & Greens Records (with licensing/distribution through Lightyear Entertainment/Virgin Music), the forthcoming album, Shadow, solidifies Wright as one of the great modern American singers. Wright celebrates intimacy, loss, community, and healing.

On Shadow Wright pens five originals including “Root of Mercy,” “Circling,” “This Way,” “Sparrow” which features Angelique Kidjo and “Your Love” with Meshell Ndegeocello. She showcases along with her own works singular renditions of songs by Cole Porter, Gillian Welch & David Rawlings, Sandy Denny, Candi Staton, Toshi Reagon, and Caitlin Canty.

Wright invited her musical family to Chicago to record with renowned engineer Ryan Freeland (he recorded her latest studio album, Grace) – who recently engineered Bonnie Raitt’s GRAMMY Award-winner, Just Like That. Shadow was produced by longtime collaborator/music director Chris Bruce (Seal, Bettye LaVette, Sheryl Crow) and was executive produced by Lizz Wright. Other performers and collaborators include Adam Levy, Lynne Earls, Justin Hicks, Morley Kamen, Jack DeBoe, Ben Zwerin, Kenny Banks Sr., Glenn Patscha, Deantoni Parks, and Rashaan Carter. Featured contributions also include violinist Trina Basu and Carnatic violinist Arun Ramamurthy, harpist Brandee Younger, composer Hanna Benn, and Chicago-based string players.

Without A&R reps and the pressures that inherently come from record labels wanting artists to fit into a specific genre, Wright makes the album she’s always wanted to record. Anchored by acoustic guitar and bare emotion, Shadow presents Wright in a gentle and triumphant light.

Wright says of Shadow, “It finally came to be my turn to lose a defining love in my life, my grandmother Martha. Something about the way she loved me gave me the backbone to stand and sing in front of rooms of strangers all these years and never feel alone. She made the world seem small and warm. Watching her long transition made me think about the impression that her love has left on me and what I was going to do with it. Shadow is the result of patiently feeling and exploring grief while also celebrating the kind of love that becomes more apparent and powerful in the presence of loss and uncertainty.”

Chris Bruce comments, “Shadow is a new chapter for Lizz Wright and we’re very clearly articulating her vision with diverse layers of music threaded together on the album. She’s an innovator that carries a much-needed spirit of humanity and energy in her music. People really respond to the calm and joy she brings. Lizz will always be able to reinvent herself in the best ways and this truly is among her greatest gifts.”

For the photoshoot supporting Shadow, Wright enlists Hollis King (former VP and Creative Director at Verve Music Group) to be the photographer. King notes, “Lizz Wright is unapologetic, bold, and full of courage. Our photoshoot was deeply personal, and it was an honor to be behind the camera. Lizz is an artist who peers into the future. She sings with a maturity of love and a softness to let us all in.” The Shadow album cover features Wright in a sleeveless patched and hooded dress by German designer Sabine von Oettingen, gold earrings by Elementality (Asheville, NC), necklace with gold pendant by Milagros Mundo (Amsterdam, NL), and jewelry by BURKINDY.

Wright nurtures a sound and feel of America that is solely her own. Shadow exposes an unbridled confidence and courage in Wright. Music fans will be delighted to hear singles such as “Sweet Feeling,” “Root of Mercy,” and “Your Love” set for release throughout autumn 2023 and early 2024 as Wright leads up to the much-anticipated full album release by Blues & Greens Records in April 2024.

Blues & Greens Records (LINK) is Wright’s innovative label venture designed to position artists to build sustainable and wholesome careers. Blues & Greens Records seeks to create a healthy ecosystem for artists as it uplifts and centralizes humanity in the music business with wellness offerings and sound business practices at the forefront.

Renowned vocalist and songwriter Lizz Wright sings a soaring reflection of the cultural fabric of America. She lies beneath the script of history, transcending social divides with an offer of love and deep sense of humanity. Her music accepts the beauty of reality and creates a collective experience of belonging for the listener. Wright’s songs embody a tradition that allows us to always feel at home.

Wright culls inspiration from her Southern upbringing in Georgia where she was the musical director of a small church in which her father was the pastor. The call and response singing with the church congregation was her first brush with music. Soon she would traverse the Great American Songbook on her path to becoming a beloved international treasure.

At the age of 22, Wright first made a name for herself nationally as a vocalist with a touring concert tribute to Billie Holiday. At 23, she signed with Verve Records for the release of Salt, which topped Billboard’s contemporary jazz charts. She went on to record for Universal Music Group and released the albums Dreaming Wide Awake (2005), The Orchard (2008), and Fellowship (2010). On Concord, Wright released Freedom & Surrender (2016) – featuring the single “Lean In,” which landed on President Obama’s Summer 2016 playlist – and Grace (2017). Wright’s (2022) release of Holding Space (a live recording of a concert in Berlin at the Columbia Theater) was her debut live album on Blues and Greens Records.

Tilly Kingston Releases Her New Single “Youth Is Wasted”

0

Tilly Kingston today releases her single Youth Is Wasted, following 2023 debut single Best Break Up Ever, which received support from BBC Introducing, has so far racked up 1.4 million YouTube views, and hundreds of spot plays across UK radio stations.

With her hard edged, punk-rock & metal fused pop, Tilly wants to connect with anyone who’s ever felt like a misfit. She explains ‘Youth Is Wasted is a tongue in cheek ‘Piss Off’ to all the people who look down on me and say I am wasting my life and having too much fun. Well if this is wasting my life than fuck yeah, I am, and loving every minute of it!!”

A refreshing, unorthodox counter to the typical pop artist, Tilly Kingston was born for the stage – a good thing, too, seeing as she has spent her whole life sleeping in a bed just a few feet away from one.

Having grown up living above local Feathers music venue in the unassuming city of Lichfield, 15 miles north of the rock’n’roll epicentre of Birmingham, it’s little surprise that the charismatic 18-year-old cannot remember a time when music was not the dominant fixture in her life. With a ‘60s- and ’70s-loving dad, and an older brother obsessed with the punk and emo of the 2000s, her musical education was both thorough and varied, making her a home-schooled student of classic songwriters such as David Bowie and The Beatles as well as of modern-day iconic frontmen like Slipknot’s Corey Taylor and Ghost’s Tobias Forge during field trips to gigs and the legendary Download festival. “People ask me what growing up around so much music was like, and I don’t know how to answer it,” she laughs of a life soundtracked by the downstairs hum of amps and applause of a crowd. “I’ve never known any different.”

Perhaps the only surprise, then, is that it took so long for Kingston to decide that her lifelong passion could also be her future calling, too, having begun singing lessons at six before conquering her high school’s ‘Battle Of The Bands’ before she could even call herself a teenager. A self-described “artistic, creative person” with a keen eye for makeup design and a love of history, learning and exploring the world around her, the epiphany coincided crucially with a difficult time in her young life. “I struggled for a long time with my identity and who I was,” she says today. “I knew I wasn’t like other kids at my school. I’m a left-of-centre kind of person, and I stuck out like a sore thumb. Lots of them would look at me and think, ‘She’s weird…’ And that led to me being bullied for a while.”

And so music would become not just a welcome fixture, but an important crutch. Thankfully, in the likes of Paramore, YUNGBLUD’s ‘The Underrated Youth’ and Machine Gun Kelly’s ‘Tickets To My Downfall’ albums, Tilly Kingston found not only a sound and a scene that she could for the first time call her own, but people and songs with which she could connect in a deeper way than ever. “I discovered myself in a way I never had before,” Kingston says.

It was around this time that multi-platinum producer Mike Krompass would happen upon Tilly singing onstage one night at the Feathers, and her detractors’ loss would begin to become the world’s gain. Now, with an infectious, effervescent pop-punk bounce, her single ‘Youth Is Wasted’ kicks open the doors of Krompass’ new Base Culture Music Group label (distributed by Sony Orchard), while introducing the next future superstar of alternative pop-rock.
