Tilly Kingston Releases Her New Single “Youth Is Wasted”

0

Tilly Kingston today releases her single Youth Is Wasted, following 2023 debut single Best Break Up Ever, which received support from BBC Introducing, has so far racked up 1.4 million YouTube views, and hundreds of spot plays across UK radio stations.

With her hard edged, punk-rock & metal fused pop, Tilly wants to connect with anyone who’s ever felt like a misfit. She explains ‘Youth Is Wasted is a tongue in cheek ‘Piss Off’ to all the people who look down on me and say I am wasting my life and having too much fun. Well if this is wasting my life than fuck yeah, I am, and loving every minute of it!!”

A refreshing, unorthodox counter to the typical pop artist, Tilly Kingston was born for the stage – a good thing, too, seeing as she has spent her whole life sleeping in a bed just a few feet away from one.

Having grown up living above local Feathers music venue in the unassuming city of Lichfield, 15 miles north of the rock’n’roll epicentre of Birmingham, it’s little surprise that the charismatic 18-year-old cannot remember a time when music was not the dominant fixture in her life. With a ‘60s- and ’70s-loving dad, and an older brother obsessed with the punk and emo of the 2000s, her musical education was both thorough and varied, making her a home-schooled student of classic songwriters such as David Bowie and The Beatles as well as of modern-day iconic frontmen like Slipknot’s Corey Taylor and Ghost’s Tobias Forge during field trips to gigs and the legendary Download festival. “People ask me what growing up around so much music was like, and I don’t know how to answer it,” she laughs of a life soundtracked by the downstairs hum of amps and applause of a crowd. “I’ve never known any different.”

Perhaps the only surprise, then, is that it took so long for Kingston to decide that her lifelong passion could also be her future calling, too, having begun singing lessons at six before conquering her high school’s ‘Battle Of The Bands’ before she could even call herself a teenager. A self-described “artistic, creative person” with a keen eye for makeup design and a love of history, learning and exploring the world around her, the epiphany coincided crucially with a difficult time in her young life. “I struggled for a long time with my identity and who I was,” she says today. “I knew I wasn’t like other kids at my school. I’m a left-of-centre kind of person, and I stuck out like a sore thumb. Lots of them would look at me and think, ‘She’s weird…’ And that led to me being bullied for a while.”

And so music would become not just a welcome fixture, but an important crutch. Thankfully, in the likes of Paramore, YUNGBLUD’s ‘The Underrated Youth’ and Machine Gun Kelly’s ‘Tickets To My Downfall’ albums, Tilly Kingston found not only a sound and a scene that she could for the first time call her own, but people and songs with which she could connect in a deeper way than ever. “I discovered myself in a way I never had before,” Kingston says.

It was around this time that multi-platinum producer Mike Krompass would happen upon Tilly singing onstage one night at the Feathers, and her detractors’ loss would begin to become the world’s gain. Now, with an infectious, effervescent pop-punk bounce, her single ‘Youth Is Wasted’ kicks open the doors of Krompass’ new Base Culture Music Group label (distributed by Sony Orchard), while introducing the next future superstar of alternative pop-rock.

Her Own Best “Friend”: Flying Solo At Last, OUDi Is More Together When She’s Alone

0

Sometimes your most rewarding relationship is the one you have with yourself. Over the course of a career that’s taken her from Canada to Nashville—and from the alt-pop/industrial world to the country arena and back again—the phenomenon known as OUDi has learned that lesson all too well. And she’s sharing it on “My Old Friend,” an irresistible high-drama ballad that marks her debut as a solo artist after years of sharing the spotlight.

Built on a plaintive instrumental melody and a mesmerizing clockwork rhythm, the song carries the emotional weight of a conversation you have in the mirror when there’s no one left around to hoodwink. OUDi’s compelling vocal starts off at a seductive purr as she confronts an inner solitude, she might not exactly welcome, but knows she can always count on:

Hello loneliness, can’t say I missed you
But let me tell you this, now I need you

The internal co-dependency fully acknowledged, her amazing voice opens up into a bittersweet embrace of the darkness:

Go and do that thing you do, make me feel and lose my mind
‘Cause I have nothing left to lose, you’ve been waiting all this time
I dare you come a little closer and rest your head upon my shoulder.

This isn’t just a declaration of artistic independence; it’s the story of a life. Born Chrystal Oudijk, she was out of the house and supporting herself by age 16, while pursuing her musical muse through a variety of projects. There was the five-piece alternative band The Perfect Strangers, the pop-industrial project Jakalope (for producer Dave “Rave” Ogilvie) and then—most famously—the pop-country duo Sons of Daughters (with Jimmy Thow). She was Chrystal Leigh by that point, and finding such success as a Billboard-charting, CCMA Award-nominated artist that she had even moved to Nashville from her native Vancouver. There was just one problem:

“Jimmy and I struggled as creative partners,” she divulges. “Add in alcohol, anxiety & depression and we had ourselves a real party!”

The near loss of a family member due to addiction and the confusion of the early pandemic era only deepened her dissatisfaction. When Sons of Daughters parted ways, she took two years to regroup, rethink and write her very first solo album. The release of “My Old Friend” is the opening salvo in her new career—strike that, her new state of being—as OUDi. It also sounds the death knell for what she describes as an adulthood full of toxic relationships and creative compromises.

“I’ve been living in survival mode my entire life,” she reflects. “It’s only been in the past two years I’ve been training my nervous system to relax. I’m excited to finally put my stories to song, for I have a lot of them.”

The year 2024 is going to mark a real renaissance for this woman, she even directed the music video for “My Old Friend,” exploiting a side talent she’s cultivated during her recent period of self-emancipation and reinvention. Her explanation for all of it is as sanguine as the song is bleak, yet equally self-aware:

“I guess it goes to show when you start to live your life authentically and true to yourself, magic really can happen.”

Orange You Glad To Be Here? Minneapolis’ The Orange Goodness Get The Show Started On New Single “Pitter Patter”

0

Even at a time when the questionable economics of recording are making musicians renew their commitment to playing live, a trio of studio aces are the last bunch you’d expect to pen a salute to the in-concert experience. But groove-obsessed Minneapolis alt/indie outfit The Orange Goodness haven’t just dedicated their new single, “Pitter Patter,” to “all the live performers of the world”; they’ve imbued every note and drumstroke with the invigorating immediacy of the best gigs you’ve ever been to.

Are you coming to us ringside? the infectious rallying cry demands.

Belly up here on the inside
Are you coming for the big show?
We’ll lay it out and feel the wind blow
Pitter patter

It’s like a modern-day “Smells Like Teen Spirit,” but with earnest enthusiasm in place of ironic self-flagellation. And the music couldn’t be farther from ’90s Northwestern sludge: Guitarist/vocalist Mike Michel, bassist Ian Allison and drummer Reese Kling lock into a light-hearted, herky-jerky rhythm that’ll have you picturing Danny Elfman riding the Tilt-a-Whirl with Les Claypool.

“Most humans seek a sense of community, and have a yearning for a celebratory ceremony where they can release their joy, release their frustration, and mend their sadness,” the band says. “Rock and roll performances provide safe havens where all are free to be who they really are and experience the majestic nature of music. High fives to all the amazing performers of the world who give us a daily lift and reveal what greatness really is!”

The title “Pitter Patter” refers to the butterflies that swarm in a performer’s stomach right before showtime. Not that The Orange Goodness have any especial reason to get stage fright, mind you. While they came together as recording-session go-tos (they’ve backed everybody from Haley to Bad Bad Hats to the Unknown Prophets), the reputation they’ve built up since the 2021 release of their debut EP, Flying Under the Radar of Chaos, has rested just as much on their abilities as a crackerjack live unit. Their high-energy shows have gotten them invited to appear on club stages, in theaters and at festivals, and they perform regular duty as the backup band for MCs and poets in their native Minnesota.

Plus, not only is their buoyant boosterism of their fellow stage warriors totally endearing, they also love a good cause. Michel first recruited Allison and Kling to help promote On the Mend, an auditory-health campaign he had founded. And on the band’s very own social-media TV channel, Orange G TV, they share educational videos for aspiring artists and music-appreciation lessons for fans, not just the customary performance clips. Those are there too, of course; did you really think a group that’s recorded an entire song about the sanctity of the stage would leave itself out of the fun?

My Next Read: “The Terrifying Realm of the Possible: Nearly True Stories” by Brett Gelman

0

Enter the wonderfully weird, always uncomfortable, side-splittingly funny world of The Terrifying Realm of the Possible, where your worst fears of who you are or might become are always just around the corner. In these masterful short stories from the singular mind of the actor and comedian Brett Gelman, you’ll meet five individuals, each navigating a uniquely strange stage of life:

– ABRAHAM AMSTERDAM (the child)
– MENDEL FREUDENBERGER (the teenager)
– JACKIE COHEN (the adult)
– IRIS BELOW (the senior)
– Z (the dead)

Our characters face the big issues; the ones we all face. As they traverse the prickly terrain of morality, family, sex, fame, religion, and death they search for answers to life’s unanswerable questions. In the futility of that search comes the absurdity, along with the comedy. The composite portrait is an existential (mis)adventure of Rothian proportions. Gelman’s remarkable first book is a bold, unforgettable debut that challenges our assumptions about what it means to be human.

Why Artists Should Still Have A Website In 2024

0

In an era dominated by social media platforms and streaming services, some artists might question the necessity of having a dedicated website for artists. However, despite the popularity of digital channels, having a personal artist website remains essential.

Control over Branding: Artist websites provide full control over branding and presentation. Unlike social media profiles or streaming platforms, where the layout and design are predetermined, artists can customize their website to reflect their unique aesthetic and identity, ensuring a cohesive brand experience for fans.

Ownership of Content: With a personal website, artists retain ownership and control over their content. This includes music, videos, artwork, and written material. Unlike on social media platforms or streaming services, where algorithms and terms of service can dictate visibility and access to content, artists can dictate how their work is seen and distributed on their website.

Professionalism and Credibility: A well-designed website signals professionalism and enhances an artist’s credibility. It serves as a central hub where fans, industry professionals like potential managers and booking agents, and the media can learn more about the artist and their body of work.

Direct Fan Engagement: Artist websites offer a direct channel for engaging with fans on a deeper level. Through features like mailing lists, blogs, and interactive elements, artists delivers a sense of community and intimacy with their audience. This direct line of communication is invaluable for building and maintaining a dedicated fan base.

Monetization and Revenue Generation: Artist websites provide multiple avenues for monetization and revenue generation. In addition to selling music, merchandise, and concert tickets directly to fans, artists can leverage their website for crowdfunding campaigns, exclusive content subscriptions, and advertising partnerships. By diversifying revenue streams, artists can achieve greater financial independence and sustainability.

While social media and streaming platforms play a massive role – and will continue to do so – in today’s music industry landscape, artists should not overlook the importance of maintaining their own website. From branding and content ownership to fan engagement and monetization, artist websites offer unparalleled opportunities for creative control, professionalism, and sustainability in 2024 and beyond.
