Francine Honey Liftoffs On New Album ‘Rockets In My Boots, Volume 1’

Don’t get her wrong– Francine Honey is just as sweet as her name implies. But on her latest record Rockets In My Boots, Volume 1, she’s frisky, risky, and ready to shoot whiskey, and the album is out now.

Building on recent career momentum, Rockets In My Boots, Volume is Honey’s most daring record yet. The past two years have brought her significant peer recognition– She won the 2022 Buddy Holly Educational Fund Scholarship Award and was named the Austin Songwriter Group International’s 2023 Songwriter of the Year. Honey has established herself as a seasoned songwriter, known for her transformative company theme-song writing workshops and proven ability to create custom and personalized songs. Now, in her triumphant return from 2021’s I Carry On …, Francine Honey is sharing her own story on Rockets In My Boots, Volume I, making it a natural testament to how empowered women know how to keep getting back up.

Because Honey knows a thing or two about coming back swinging. She was born the daughter of small-town Tweed, Ontario’s beloved local barber, a legacy she pays tribute to on track four, “Come Sit In My Chair”. Though she always had a passion for songwriting, she initially took a more linear path in life, getting her university degree in Mathematics and Computer Science and working in that sector for several years.

Tragedy struck when her then-husband fell into a deep struggle with mental illness, and Honey was forced to re-locate and start her life over again. But with classic country girl grit, Honey maintained a job in the Federal Government while raising her children alone. Though her music had seemingly taken a backseat, she never stopped writing songs, even through her toughest days.

In 2013, she made the bold decision to leave her full-time job to pursue her music. She earned a songwriting certificate at Berklee and cut her teeth studying alongside seasoned pros in Nashville. Her first album Re-Drawn was released in 2014, followed by her first full-length album to be continued… in 2018. To be continued… captured her six-day collaboration with Grammy-nominated producer Neilson Hubbard, recording live-off-the-floor in Nashville collaboration with Grammy-nominated Hubbard has continued with the release of her top 50 Rolling Stone Magazine Christmas album Take Me to the North Pole in 2019 and I Carry On in 2021. Not to mention the numerous stunning and fun music videos that her and Hubbard have released.

Again collaborating with Hubbard on Rockets In My Boots, Volume I, Honey describes herself on lead single “Cadillac” as “a pinch of sass, but all class” and proves that she can hold her own against a mean twangy guitar. On fiery “Better Think Again,” the record’s forthcoming single, she warns–

“The Queen Bee can still sting when it’s necessary
No I’m not just here for the temporary
You think you’re fooling me
You better think again.”

Fueled by heart, sass, and hard-earned stripes, Rockets In My Boots, Volume I will undoubtedly carry Francine Honey to new heights. Liftoff, commence!

Just about a month ago it was announced that Drums & Demons: The Tragic Journey of Jim Gordon by Joel Selvin would be published by Diversion Books on February 27. In the weeks that followed, a number of advance reading copies of the book found their way to some notable recipients who had expressed interest in reading it. As the countdown to February 27 continues we share some of their comments.

Mark Lindsay, frontperson for Paul Revere & the Raiders and host of Mark Lindsay’s American Revolution heard on SiriusXM’s Little Steven’s Underground Garage channel wrote, “Jim was always soft-spoken, and the first one to arrive at a session. His drums spoke for him, and he had a subtle but commanding presence. Years later, when he was scheduled for a session where I was producing a commercial, he arrived 45 minutes late, was surly, and uninvolved. Someone else had taken over the Jim we knew and loved, and that was the last time I saw him. Based upon my interactions with Jim Gordon, author Joel Selvin accurately portrays Jim’s genius as well as his devolvement into the living hell he gradually occupied.”

Amir “Questlove” Thompson offered, “Jim Gordon is one of the most important drummers in American rock history — he kept the beat for everyone from Buffalo Springfield to the Beach Boys to Jackson Browne to John Denver to Randy Newman. He is also a tragic figure, a man whose mental illness and substance abuse sent him spiraling into tragedy. Joel Selvin’s biography, both painstaking and painful, brings Gordon’s darkness into the light.”

The Grateful Dead’s Mickey Hart commented, “Jim was one of the rare players who danced on the edge and knew the secrets. When you play with rhythms like hot coals, they will burn you. Deep drumming is different than just playing drums. Yes, Jim was healing himself when he drummed but when he stopped the voices started again no doubt. Drums can talk to you in voices known and unknown. I finished this book and stared slack-jawed out at space trying to come to grips with this amazing, tragic story.”

Pete Thomas, drummer for Elvis Costello & the Attractions, who was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame with his bandmates, wrote, “Joel’s book is a fascinating, well-written period piece describing the L.A. session scene in the ‘70s. When you play the drums ‘Jim Gordon’ is a place you can go. Like Charlie, Levon or Ringo, he invented his own style of playing rock. Up on the beat but then laying it back just a hair for the second verse. He made records sound both attractive and beautiful. He made hits!! Most drummers have gone a bit off the rails at some point in their careers but sadly things went very wrong for Jim. Joel describes this aspect of Jim’s life in a very thoughtful and sympathetic way.”

Producer/arranger/solo artist Van Dyke Parks notes that Jim Gordon played on his very first Warner Bros. single back in 1967 and commented, “Joel Selvin maintains a vise-like grip on decades of the music biz of the Counter-Culture that brings background musicians to the front-page, above the fold. Drums & Demons covers Gordon’s ascent as first-call studio musician status—to his tragic incarceration at Vacaville, from his delusional downfall into a psychotic, murderous collapse. I loved Jim like a brother, and am grateful for Selvin’s unstinting notice of Gordon’s luminescence. That adds great leavening to this heartbreaking work of staggering genius.”

Selvin’s riveting narrative follows the man who many consider the greatest rock drummer of all time, from his humble beginnings as a teenage touring musician, to his many landmark accomplishments in the studio and on the road, through his downward spiral into mental illness, matricide and incarceration. With the cooperation of the late rock legend’s family, and based on his trademark extensive, detailed research, Selvin uncovers one of the darkest stories in popular music, further cementing his reputation as a master of rock noir.

The subject of Joel Selvin’s latest book was raised in the San Fernando Valley of Los Angeles and got his start as a professional drummer touring with the Everly Brothers in the mid-1960s. Jim Gordon’s penchant for creative and astonishingly accurate musicianship earned him regular session work, joining the community retroactively referred to as The Wrecking Crew. His preternatural intuition and perfect sense of time can be heard on more than 30 Top 10 singles including several #1 hits, such as the Beach Boys’ “Good Vibrations,” Carly Simon’s “You’re So Vain” and “I Got You Babe” by Sonny & Cher (he also supplied the literal beat for “The Beat Goes On” by the latter). He has been immortalized on albums by George Harrison, John Lennon and the Byrds, among dozens of other household name music acts. Gordon was notably the drummer for Derek and the Dominos and provided the piano coda for their evergreen anthem “Layla.” Joel Selvin details how Gordon didn’t merely keep time, but he was also instrumental in shaping compositions; whether it was his Latin-influenced rhythms on “Rikki Don’t Lose That Number” by Steely Dan or his monumental drum break on the Incredible Bongo Band’s “Apache” (a staple of hip-hop from the genre’s inception, having been sampled on over 750 other records), he wasn’t just a player on hits, he made them hits.

Burgeoning Montreal-born, Toronto-based queer pop artist Jennarie is ready to explode onto the scene with her debut single, “My Body Treats Me Better,” out now. The track is a funky, upbeat, body-positive anthem defined by soulful, soaring vocals reminiscent of Amy Winehouse and Lady Gaga.

Jennarie first cut her teeth in the Toronto music scene, where she gained a powerful stage presence by performing regular live shows all over town. She’s continued to make waves and build a strong name for herself in the years since, with renowned Canadian print and online magazine The WholeNote recently hailing her for her “big voice, fearless delivery, ebullient sense of rhythm, and bubbles of humor.”

Now, with “My Body Treats Me Better,” Jennarie is ready to take her career to the next level. She enlisted producer Nick Tateishi for the project, who recently provided production to singer and songwriter Francois Klark’s JUNO Award-nominated 2022 sophomore album, Adventure Book, and is known for his work with the likes of Clerel, HILLARI, and Kiki Rowe, to name a few.

“‘My Body Treats Me Better’ is a funky pop anthem I wrote about body liberation, self-love, unlearning harmful societal scripts and liberating ourselves from self-loathing and insecurity,” Jennarie explains of the track. “It’s the perfect feel-good bop and features real instruments, including saxophone, guitar, bass, electric piano and drums. The music and the message are the perfect pick-me-up for any time of day, and the retro pop vibe is sure to catch the ears of anyone who listens.”

“My Body Treats Me Better” is an electric track packed to the brim with good energy, heartfelt lyrics, and a strong, positive message that speaks to the power of self-love and finding beauty in one’s own individuality. “Don’t you let those voices tell you what to do/Go on and break those walls, live the life you’re meant to,” she croons on the track. Following up the success of their earlier singles from the album 12 Bar Prescription, Fog Blues and Brass Band has released their latest bop “Who’s Gonna Suffer” that blends blues roots music with backing brass instruments to making a rocking fourth single. Fog Blues and Brass Band bring the groove that encapsulates their dynamic and thrilling live show that gets audiences toe tapping and twisting to their over-the-top full sound blues rock.

Tortured Soul Release “Runnin’ Back To You” Ahead Of December Live Shows

The new single from the soulful-house group Tortured Soul perfectly captures the energy and undeniable pull of an on-off romance.

With up-tempo call and response vocals influenced by the sounds of The Temptations, The Whispers, and The Spinners, “Runnin’ Back to You” serves listeners a lively house and disco-esque track. Vocalist and drummer, John Christian Urich, says that when it comes to writing and recording, he always aims to bridge the gap between studio production and performing the music live. “I try to create strong songs that will work with the full production or would still be strong ‘unplugged’. The vocals on this track are a bit more aggressive than other Tortured Soul recordings, digging a little more into a live performance sound”. As for the lyrics, “Runnin’ Back to You” encourages all who listen to hold on to a good thing and to not lose sight of it–or you will be running back to it! “Sometimes you grow out of things or apart from people”, muses Urich. “But then, there are those few joys or relationships in life you may walk away from but inevitably reconnect with”.

The single marks the first of new music since the group’s 2022 album, Take the Day Off, and drops just in time for their multi-live date stint in Johannesburg. The group will be performing two shows at Untitled Basement on December 14th and 15th as well as taking part in this year’s Jams on Ice Grand Festival at the Elkah Stadium from December 17th. The group has performed many shows in South Africa over the years including the DStv Delicious International Food & Music Festival, Cape Town Jazz Festival, PMB Jazz Festival, the Lesotho Tourism Festival, and are excited to return.

Jeremy Hotz and His Sidekick Shack Announces ‘Très Misérables’ East Coast 2024 Tour

Jeremy Hotz invites you to join him and his renowned dog, Shack on their journey across North America as they celebrate the milestone of his 10th national tour titled “Très Misérables!

Hotz explains the title, “I’ve always liked “Les Misérables,” but it just didn’t sound miserable enough. So I hired an interpreter and fixed it!…Hopefully I got the accents right!”

The “Très Misérables” tour is a brand-new show filled with Jeremy’s iconic miserable jokes and mishaps. The tour starts in May 2024 with more dates to come.

One of the most unique stand-up comics working today, Canadian born Jeremy Hotz is a proven international success. With stellar performances at the Montreal Comedy Festival: Just For Laughs and his sold out Canadian theater tours, as well as performances all over the United States, Europe and Australia, Jeremy continues to grab audiences with his completely original and confused, yet very astute, observational comedy.

In 1997, he performed at the Just For Laughs Comedy Festival in Montreal and received a standing ovation after his debut performance at the festival’s prestigious television gala. He returned to the Just For Laughs Comedy Festival in 1999, 2002, 2003, 2005 (voted Best Performer by the “Globe and Mail”), 2007, 2008 (Chosen as Best in Fest by the “Montreal Gazette”) 2011-2013 where he was one of the hosts for the Just for Laughs TV series for The Comedy Network and 2016 where he did his own one man show at the Olympic Theatre. Recognition came quick, as American studios and networks showed interest and Jeremy was offered major development deals from CBS, DISNEY and COMEDY CENTRAL.

Another highlight for Jeremy was his debut appearance on The Late Show with David Letterman, followed by five appearances on The Tonight Show with Jay Leno. Jeremy has also appeared on Comedy Central with his own standup special and filmed two others; “What A Miserable Show This Is…” and “Some of the Best of Jeremy Hotz” for CTV. His current DVD “What a Miserable DVD This Is…” is a hit. And in 2018 Jeremy released a one hour comedy special called “Dangerously Handsome”.

Beyond his stand-up comic merits, Jeremy is also a talented actor who appeared as a regular in the final season of HBO Canada’s Call Me Fitz, as a guest star on Unusually Thicke and Jay Leno’s guest on the highly successful Jay Leno’s Garage that aired on CNBC in July. Hotz has also appeared in the feature films My Favorite Martian (with Elizabeth Hurley) and Speed 2 (with Sandra Bullock). He starred in the four-part mini-series Married Life on Comedy Central and was nominated for a Gemini Award for his special “OH CANA-DUH” on CBC. He was the recipient of a Gemini Award for “Best Performance in a Comedy Show or Series” for his work in the celebrated series “The Newsroom” on CBC and PBS.

Jeremy was also a staff writer and performer on the critically acclaimed “The Jon Stewart Show” (Paramount), and received a Gemini nomination for “Best Writing in Comedy or Variety Show or Series” for his half hour comedy special, “Whatever Happened to Jeremy Hotz?”

In 2008, Jeremy was honored with the Dave Broadfoot, Comic Genius Award at the Canadian Comedy Awards, which is the most prestigious comedy award in the country. Following that year, he was awarded Best Male Stand-Up 2009. After headlining the Melbourne, Sydney and Auckland Comedy Festivals, Hotz was awarded the Jury Prize – Best International Performer at the Sydney Comedy Festival.

This year, Jeremy completed his 9th national solo show; “Jeremy Hotz -Up Close and Miserable”, accompanied by Shackleton, his long-haired Chihuahua and emotional support animal that suffers from anxiety. It is his most successful tour to date.

11th Annual Jammin’ For Joy Charity Concert December 14 For SickKids Foundation Featuring Gavin McLeod, Zach Oliver and JIN

Hosted and headlined by Gavin McLeod, Jammin’ for Joy is an annual charity concert celebrating its 11th year. The concert began more than a decade ago in Gavin’s hometown of Milton, ON, to raise money and toys for underprivileged children during the holidays. This year, the concert will be returning to the legendary Horseshoe Tavern in Toronto on December 14. Proceeds from every ticket sold will be donated to SickKids Foundation.

This year’s lineup will include an acoustic set by English singer-songwriter Zach Oliver, as well as performances by Niagara Falls-based blues/psychedelia band JIN and Gavin McLeod.

In years past, Jammin’ For Joy has been able to donate thousands of toys to United Way, and has fundraised on behalf of Covenant House and The Salvation Army. The concert has always been committed to helping children in need during the holidays. This year’s partnership with SickKids allows Jammin’ For Joy the opportunity to donate directly to a hospital that is dedicated to helping improve the lives of children.

“Growing up, my band and I were lucky enough to have our health, and I know that opportunity isn’t afforded to many children,” McLeod said. “Hopefully, this donation is able to give at least one kid a better Christmas with their family. It’s very exciting that music is able to make that happen.”

Zach Oliver is a singer-songwriter based in Toronto originally from England.  His gappy teeth allow him to sing higher notes than ever before, hence his love for playing live and recording tunes.

Originating in Niagara Falls, ON, Nicole Cerminara, her brother Joseph Cerminara, and Myles Rogers have spent the last five years pushing and challenging each other musically. It’s most obvious live: the band’s telekinetic-like dynamic has been forged by countless gigs spent improvising entire movements of blues, psychedelia and rock ‘n’ roll.

The music itself is a weaving landscape of classic songwriting one moment, next a rolling wave of Zeppelin and Hendrix-style riff rock, all while feeding nostalgia and achieving something radical and different to its predecessors.

Gavin McLeod is a 24-year-old Canadian singer, songwriter, and guitarist from Milton, Ontario. Growing up in a musical family, Gavin played his first professional gig at the age of 10 and spent his teenage years performing live at hundreds of venues across Canada.

With a foundation rooted in raw, guitar-driven melodies and honest lyrics, Gavin proudly wears his influences, drawing inspiration from heroes Neil Young and Bruce Springsteen. On stage, Gavin is accompanied by his band, which includes childhood friends Patrick Mills on guitar, Tyler Dewar on drums, and Joey DePaiva on bass. Gavin and his band have focused heavily on their live show, headlining multiple nights at Toronto’s Horseshoe Tavern and playing stages from RBC Bluesfest in Ottawa to the International Blues Challenge in Memphis.

Eager to capture this live energy in a studio setting, Gavin began work on his inaugural full-length album in early 2023, recording the majority of the project live off the floor. The first single is set to release in early 2024, with the album hitting shelves worldwide in the fall.

 

Alan Tuck Unleashes Powerful Fusion with ‘By Any Means (Warriors)’ Feat. iRoc Omega and Bobby John

Independent Toronto-based artist Alan Tuck is back with his latest single, “By Any Means (Warriors).” The high-octane, blood-pumping track features Chicago rapper iRoc Omega, who recently collaborated with Snoop Dogg, and award-winning Montreal-based rock vocalist and songwriter Bobby John. The result is an irresistible, genre-bending rock-rap anthem reminiscent of Jay-Z and Linkin Park’s stellar 2004 joint project Collision Course, tied together with a heartwarming backstory sure to make anyone a fan.

Just as he’s dedicated to his chosen craft, Tuck is also a committed parent. His life revolves around his teenage son, Aiden — and from September to April, that means countless days and nights spent at the ice rink, shuttling him to and from his practices and games. It was here that he found inspiration for “By Any Means (Warriors).” Tuck penned the track in the hopes that it would act as a hype song of sorts for Aiden’s team and give them something to listen to before games, motivating them to give it everything they had each day and leave it all on the ice.

Amidst the dog days of summer 2023, prior to the start of Aiden’s season, Tuck laid down the lyrics and initial recording of the track. Knowing he had something special on his hands, he reached out to iRoc Omega. Though they’d never met before, Omega dug the beat and energy of the track and immediately agreed to hop on it. Having secured Omega’s brilliant rap verse, Tuck enlisted Bobby John, who he’d previously collaborated with, to add the rock flavor he desired.

Working together, the trio put the final touches on “By Any Means (Warriors),” the finished product of which is three straight minutes of high-energy, feel-good motivation. And while the track may be a sports anthem, you don’t have to be a hockey player to catch a vibe from it. Together, Alan Tuck, iRoc Omega, and Bobby John adeptly speak to the power of persistence, dedication, and determination to give it your all to the things you care about most — whether that be your job, your family, or your team.
